Three Teens Charged With Attempted Murder After Fiery Crash On Highway 29

January 11, 2016

Three 16-year old juveniles have now been arrested on multiple felony charges including attempted murder in connection with a fiery two vehicle crash in Molino after a burglary and shots fired incident late last year.

Tracy Deshawn Lett, Jr. of Pensacola, Mariachi  Jerrell Chambers of Cantonment and and Vashawn Lamond Brown of Molino were charged as adults with attempted felony murder, grand theft of a vehicle, criminal mischief and armed burglary of a conveyance. Each remains jailed without bond.

About 4:50 a.m. on November 28, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of Highway 29 and Barth Road for a burglary of a vehicle in progress. In the meantime, the burglary victim told dispatchers that he was following the suspects south on Highway 29, and then he advised the suspects were shooting at him and his vehicle.

When the suspects reached Barth Road in Molino, they veered into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck, according to multiple witnesses. The driver of the pickup, Randall Enfinger, and his 15-year old granddaughter, Abbigail Barninger, were critically injured.

(Article continues below photo)

A deputy that arrived on scene a short time later reported finding the suspects’ crumpled vehicle with the engine compartment on fire. He observed the driver, later identified as Chambers, being removed from the driver’s seat by a passerby and Lett trapped with his legs pinned under the dash of the burning vehicle. The deputy and passersby were unable to free him, and the deputy tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.  The deputy and bystanders then used dirt to smother the engine compartment fire and before pulling Lett from the vehicle.

The deputy then reportedly noticed that across the intersection one of the burglary victims was attempting to detain Brown. The deputy handcuffed and detained Brown.

The burglary victim told deputies that he was at his residence in the 500 block of Highway 164 when he heard his dogs barking and walking outside on his porch to see two males breaking into his 2006 Pontiac sedan. He said they ran away after he yelled at them. The burglary victim said his brother heard the suspects get into a vehicle and his brother followed the dark colored vehicle down Highway 29.

The burglary victim’s brother said he got into his pickup truck and followed the suspects down Highway 29. He said he tried to get around in front of them, according to court documents, but they came around his vehicle and shot at him five or six times. His pickup was hit at least three times. After observing the wreck, the victim’s brother said he chased one of the suspects, later identified as Brown, into the tree line and brought him back to the corner of the intersection.

An Escambia County EMS employee told deputies that Brown said he was walking home when he was chased and hit by a truck, dragged into the woods and hit several times. He told the EMS employee that he had found a gun on the side of the road and kept it for personal protection.

An investigation determined that the wrecked vehicle had been stolen earlier from a residence in the 9000 block of Barth Road where it was unlocked with a spare key in the trunk.

A debit or credit card belonging to the vehicle’s owner was recovered from Brown’s pocket, as was an empty magazine for a semi-automatic handgun that was recovered from the area were Brown was stopped, according to an arrest report.

The entire incident was investigated by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene but not process the traffic accident or make a report, according to court documents.

Brown and Lett were among five defendants charged in 2014 for their role in an August 2013 burglary at Molino Park Elementary School. Most the stolen items  — including computers and iPads– were burned by the suspects. They were placed on juvenile probation under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice through age 19. Each was ordered to undergo counseling, and follow a curfew of 7 p.m. Sunday though Thursday nights and 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. It was not clear if that probation was still in effect at the time of the November 2015 burglary and traffic crash.

They might be young but they knew what they were doing. This isn’t the first time (from what I understand) that they have been in some trouble. They are all 16 and well aware of the actions they are doing and the consequences that follow. I don’t feel that they should get life but a little time in DJJ and house arrest is not gonna get the job done to rehabilitate (if there is actually a chance for rehabilitation). I pray for all that are involved in this from victims to the ones that committed this crazy crime.

    REGARDING:
“Prison will be just a training center to show them how to beat the system better. Be aware that when they are released they’ll be better trained and this will not be the last time you hear about them”

Console yourself with the thought that prison is full of people who failed at crime.
Anything they teach is likely to be how to continue to fail.
( It would be interesting if that is why there are more in prison over time.)

“Look i am a friend of theirs they are kids and deserve to be punished but life is harsh”

    Life less 8 years maybe?

“i am very close friends with brown he was probably showing out”

    Shows out often, does he?
By the way, please define “showing out”.
Is it synonymous with the current charges?
If not, how and why does it differ?

“but house arrest and 2 yrs djj should do”

    Forgive and forget?
    Why so long?
Won’t that cut into showing-out time?

Justifying misdeeds is often worse to the misdeeds because it implies much more of the same is a good thing, or at not a very bad thing.
What if they learn to aim?

So sad.. Young lives wasted. Now these boys will probably spend at least 20 years in jail. And who is going to pay for their sorry butts while they do nothing all day doing their time? Me and all the other hard working tax paying citizens of Florida, that’s the sad part. Now some young man or woman trying to get a start in life is being taxed to support punks like this, that is what is a waste. I am not sad for them one bit and their lives aren’t wasted they chose to throw them away.

I think it is commendable the citizens got involved to notifying ESCO and help apprehend the criminals. As far as the attempted murder charge, if shots had been fired upon sworn deputies, they would have returned the fire and ended the attempt upon their lives. No matter the extenuating circumstances or the remorse demonstrated by the criminals facts still stand. They were given another chance with probation. I say guilty as charged and I am glad they are going to be punished and removed from society. There were a menace.

To all who remark about “poor boys” and so on– would you be saying the same thing if the shooter had killed the victim in this case or a member of your family?. They stole a car— stole other property and almost killed two other people in a wreck. This is not the first time for these three– plus how many others times have they done the same thing. If I or my family had been almost killed by them I would not be as forgiving as some people. Those who keep saying they are just kids– they have learned how the play the system very well and have shown they’ll lie about any thing. Prison will be just a training center to show them how to beat the system better. Be aware that when they are released they’ll be better trained and this will not be the last time you hear about them.

So, two of these young men were on probation for previous crimes as juveniles. They were violating probation for associating with criminals. Why wasn’t that one of the charges?
Someone posted earlier that one of them lost their mother years ago to murder. So, is he trying to do the same thing? Losing a parent is not an excuse for bad behavior. Many children lose parents in some form. They don’t resort to crime and attempted murder.
Hopefully, this will be the wake up call they need? Although not likely.

@Lj, I totally agree with you. The smartest answer on here. :)

  11. Mike on January 12th, 2016 4:17 am

Being a juvenile (16 years old being on the closer side of adult) will no longer guarantee being tried as a juvenile, esp for something as serious as all this mess. This “I can raise hell & get away with it because I’m a juvenile” attitude kids have now needs to be stopped. These 3 hellions here should be made an example of to all of their type in the area, that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.

Someone mentioned religion, lotsa people get very pious when they are in trouble.

  12. Retired on January 12th, 2016 12:37 am

If the victims of crime turn to spiritual practices and beliefs to affect their own healing, I think that is commendable. Do not confuse the issue. Do not obstruct justice. They are two separate things. I suppose God forgives sinners but still puts them in Hell for eternity if you believe that dogma. I hope judges and juries use logic and reason and protect the rest of society from criminals young and old, black or white etc. That behavior cannot be tolerated.

  13. Leighann Neese on January 11th, 2016 9:24 pm

I’m not saying they shouldn’t pay society’s debt. What I am saying is that is its not our place to determine whether or not they are seriously sorry or fronting and that everyone needs to examine their own hearts. It’s my job as an ambassador for Christ to share His gospel that is available to even the worst of sinners (which is all of us). Any of the other family who may be reading any of this, we love you and God loves you with an everlasting love. Don’t be angry with people who say things they don’t understand. You are loved immensely by the One who gave His life for you. To everyone reading,If you will bow your heart to him, confessing and turning from your sin (your unbelief and desire to please self instead of God-all other sins are consequential because of these two), asking Him to save you because of the death on the cross, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, you will be saved. People’s hearts are full of hate, God is love.

“You guys have no idea what you’re talking about. ”

Just because someone doesn’t see things as you do or agree with your conclusions, doesn’t mean they don’t know anything.

It is good to care for their souls but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about the people they might’ve killed or might kill or otherwise hurt if not stopped.

    David for better understanding

Everyone has done something wrong in their lives you never know a person struggle . And know one is perfect . I’m not sayin my lil cousin chambers is right in this because he’s not . But if only you new his struggle he lost his mothers years ago too a horrible murder . So before you get on hea and throw shade think before you speak . I’m a mother of 6 and what I learned in life is you can give your kids the world . Raise them the best way you can and that don’t mean that they won’t go astray . All we can do is pray too the lord up above . We never no how our kids will turn out you all be blessed now .

Apparently they are experts at bamboozling also.

  17. Molino resident on January 11th, 2016 5:15 pm

Two of these boys broke into Molino Park school & stole several computers , laptops , & ipads and then destroyed them trying to get rid of them. It cost thousands of dollars to the taxpayers of Escambia County. Next they are out rambling in the early morning hours , stealing cars ,breaking in peoples homes , shooting at people , and almost causing the death of two innocent people. I’m not saying it’s the parents fault , but these boys are uncontrollable. They need to be locked up so they will have plenty of time to work on their new found christianity. They have no respect for anyone , and they think your property is theirs for the taking. Molino will be alot safer for everyone with them locked up.

  18. Lj on January 11th, 2016 2:27 pm

Its not always the parents fault for kids turning out this way… my parents did everything they could to keep us safe and on the right path my brother still ended up a felony… i guess what im trying to say is dont place blame on a third party that wasnt there place ot on those who did the wrong. They did it and they should own up to theyre own mistakes. I understand that background can cause people to commit bad things but in the end they are the ones who chose to do it. No one held a gun to theyre heads or threatened to ground them if they didnt attempts these crims.

  19. Bill on January 11th, 2016 12:43 pm

@leann needed I think it wonderful the way you and your family has handled this whole incident. But let’s not lose the fact that these are criminals and need to go to prison for what they done. If you have never volunteered in prison they have a chapel there where these boys can continue there new found love for the lord.

  20. Perry on January 11th, 2016 12:28 pm

I’m glad these guys were caught, and I’m glad the victims are recovering from their injuries. In the original story several weeks ago, didn’t the guys in the truck chasing them say they stayed a long way behind them, but now the story says they tried to get in front of them?

  21. chris on January 11th, 2016 12:08 pm

“you could be in the same situation if it weren’t for grace.” Likely not because I am not out breaking into cars at 4 AM. Just saying.

  22. mick on January 11th, 2016 12:00 pm

Prison for all three for a long time. Their second chance at life should be after serving that long prison sentence.

  23. Mic Hall on January 11th, 2016 11:34 am

We need mandatory ADDED prison time for possessing a firearm during this type of crime and even more time for firing it. That along with all the other charges SHOULD keep them put away for the rest of their lives but we have a broken system.

It’s about the only way to stop STUPID judges from not protecting the law abiding from the lawless.

The best thing for society would be if the three had died in the crash but instead others will suffer and pay for their mistakes instead.

  24. kayla on January 11th, 2016 10:52 am

Sad thing is I know one of them. I actually went to middle school with Chambers and he seemed like a good kid. Looks can be deceiving…

  25. Terri Sanders on January 11th, 2016 10:27 am

Three more incidents of a flagrant waste of taxpayers money defending these scumbags..wonder what their defense and medical bills will end up costing us?Meanwhile one of the victims in the crash is still struggling with his injuries that very well could become life threatening. With our prison systems overfilled…you would think someone would say…”hey the system is not working..wonder why?”The biggest reason is so called civil rights for the criminals….and guess who is behind that?

  26. Rachela Huckstead on January 11th, 2016 10:09 am

You guys have no idea what you’re talking about. My daughter was in the accident and I’ve had a chance to talk to the families of some of these boys. They are hurt. They are broken. We’ve talked to the boys also. At least two of them learned some things in their hospital rooms. And one of them responded way more respectfully to Abbi than the comments on here. Those boys have a story. You’d each be wise to keep the negative comments to yourself; you could be in the same situation if it weren’t for grace. And God has a way of allowing us to each see the ugliness of our own hearts. I’d encourage you to check and see if Jesus is Lord of your life because what In reading sure doesn’t sound like Jesus.

My dad has been in and out of the hospital with many problems. My Abbi is doing wonderful!!! But they would both tell you the same thing. Dad hasn’t been able to meet them yet, but Abbi loves seeing and talking to these boys about their need for Jesus. I’m convinced many of you should spend a few minutes really listening to her also. We are all sinners. Just because you’ve never walked the path these boys have, you need Jesus too. Don’t wait until eternity folks; you will find it’s too late!

  33. chris on January 11th, 2016 6:30 am

I am guessing that, along with the handgun, Mr. Brown, the defendant, also found the debit card on the side of the road. Lot of stuff appears to be on the side of the road.

  34. Debbie on January 11th, 2016 6:11 am

I just wonder… All the people who were saying negative things about the people who followed these no goods , do you still feel the same way ? What do you think their next crime would be ? They need to be stopped before they DO murder someone. That someone could be a member of your family. They clearly didn’t learn from their earlier crimes. I personally would like to say thank you to the men that didn’t just sit back and let them get by with their sorry no good ways and I’m very glad they were not successful at killing you . I also pray the grandfather and grand-daughter that were injured that morning are both doing well.

Maybe the courts will throw some more of that probation at them. They really learned their lesson after burglarizing Molino Park Elementary. Life sentences should do the trick. They will never be productive members of society.
