Robert A. “Bob” Cawthon

Mr. Robert A. “Bob” Cawthon, 83, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2015, in Atmore.
Mr. Cawthon was a native of Bluff Springs and a lifetime resident of Century. Mr. Cawthon was a Korean War Veteran, VFW, Civil Engineer, CORE Engineer for years, and helped build several oil plants in this area. He was on the film crews at White Sands. His father, Robert F. Cawthon; mother, Ruby Coleman Cawthon; aunt, Josephine Anderson; and two brothers, John Jacob Cawthon and Wayne Cawthon, precede him in death.
Survivors include his son, Robert A. Cawthon, Jr. of Jay; daughter, Marie (Dale) Levins of Byrneville; one sister, Rose White of Pensacola; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at 3 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Nathan Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at the Crary Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 2 p.m. until service time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Tony Levins, Terry Levins, Todd Levins, Brady Levins, Jody Levins, Joey Rogers and Zack Carter.
Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes is in charge of all arrangements.
Ida Gibson Garcia

Mrs. Ida Gibson Garcia, 42, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015, in Mobile.
Mrs. Garcia was a native of Mobile and a resident of Saraland for most of her life. Her sister, Tina Brady, precedes her in death.
Survivors include her father, Larry Gibson of Atmore; mother, Marsha Apostalo of Saraland; husband, Keith Garcia of Saraland; two daughters, Alyssa Garcia and Rebecca Garcia both of Saraland; and one brother, Larry Gibson, Jr. of Saraland.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Marty Gehman officiating.
Burial will follow at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 4, 2015, from 12 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Gibson, Tony Gibson, Donald Gibson, Earl Weaver, Tregan McCreight, Robbie Brown and Jerry Gibson.
Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes is in charge of all arrangements.
William Ernest Bowman
March 2, 2015
William Ernest Bowman, 87, of Pensacola, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015. He was born on October 13, 1927, in Barrineau Park. Ernie graduated from Tate High School in 1945. Ernie served a tour in the U.S. Army and a tour in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Ernie retired from Hygeia Coca Cola Bottling Company in 1988 after 41-1/2 years of service.
Ernie was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Junior Bowman; his mother, Myrtle Mae Beverly Bowman; and a sister, Marian Kathleen Bowman Liddell.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Marie Silvia Bowman; daughter, Tina Diane Bowman of Pensacola; son, William Ernest “Bill” (Wanda) Bowman of Ocean Springs, MS; granddaughters, Alicia Marie Bowman of San Francisco, CA, and Amanda Kay Bowman of Ocean Springs, MS; nieces, Linda June Liddell (Buddy) White of Navarre; Bobbie Sue Liddell (Jim) Malbeck of Lillian; and a sister-in-law, Nadine Silvia (John) Ware.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dallas Peel, R.N., Jerry Flannigan and Ken Carpenter for all their love and support through the years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Bro. Bill Flannigan officiating.
Burial will follow in Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Bill Bowman, Tina Bowman, Wanda Bowman, Ken Carpenter, Jerry Flannigan, and Jim Malbeck.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke Methodist Church or the Hadji Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa.

Daniel “Guy” Prothro
March 2, 2015
Daniel “Guy” Prothro, a proud Korean War Veteran, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2015. He was born March 20, 1933, in Lamar County, Alabama, to Jim Richard Prothro and Jimmie “Nell” Brock Prothro. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne division. “Sarge,” loved spending time with his family, playing dominoes with his friends, NASCAR racing, Blue Wahoos baseball games, and especially Alabama football.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 52 years, and best friend, Vicki Mitchell Prothro; daughters Joy (Mike) Lasseter and Sharon (Gene) Cochran; son Stanley; grandchildren, Kelsi (Jesse) Finley, Kalin Lasseter, Keely Cochran, and Josh McCormick; and great-granddaughters, Bailey and Rylee Finley. He will also be missed by his large extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 5, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Faith Chapel North Funeral Home in Cantonment.
Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Bro. Bill Flannigan of Plainview Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.
Pallbearers will be Buck Kelly, Ronnie Carden, Josh McCormick, Gene Wiggins, Phillip Odom, and Mike Lasseter.

Bill Puts Lottery Winnings By Sex Offenders in Escrow

Sex offenders who hit it big in the Florida Lottery would have the winnings placed into escrow, giving their victims an opportunity to resolve any claims, under a proposal filed Friday by state Rep. Bob Cortes, R-Altamonte Springs.
The measure, which doesn’t yet have a Senate companion, would place the prize of a person convicted of sexual battery, lewd acts or other sexual misconduct into an escrow account for one year. The proposal would also put a hold on any prize of $600 or more if a winner has an outstanding debt to a state agency or owes child support.
The measure comes after the Orlando Sentinel reported in December that a convicted sex offender from Lake County won a $3 million prize in a scratch-off game. Earlier this month, an Orange County judge denied a request from the Lake County man’ two male victims, aged 6 and 11 when the crime was committed in 1997, to freeze the winnings. After being informed of the winner’s police record, the lottery removed the individual’s photo from its website.

Hundreds Attend Walnut Hill Ruritan Auction

Hundreds of people attended the 41st Annual Walnut Hill Ruritan Club Farm Equipment Auction Saturday in Walnut Hill.
Items sold included farm equipment, lawn and garden equipment, household items and more during the event, which is held each year on the last Saturday of February. All proceeds from the auction benefit the Walnut Hill Ruritan Club’s community service projects in the Walnut Hill area.

Undefeated Tate Lady Aggies Win Weekend Tourney; Tate Baseball Wins Again

The Tate Lady Aggies took home the Florida USA Championship trophy after going undefeated in a two-day, 28-team tournament Friday and Saturday in Panama City. The Aggies gave up only three runs all weekend, while accumulating 33 of their own runs.
Tori Perkins led the way on the mound and at the plate had a grand slam against Gulliver Prep of Miami on Saturday. Rachel Wright and Hayden Lindsay also added to their home run totals.
The Lady Aggies remain undefeated on the season. Tate will host district foe Niceville on Tuesday at Tate, then travel to Milton on Thursday night.
Tate 4, Escambia 0
Meanwhile, the Tate Aggies remain undefeated at 4-0 on the baseball season with a 4-0 win over Escambia High School on Saturday.
Mark Miller pitched a complete game shutout. Sawyer Smith was 2-3 with two RBIs, Trace Penton went 2-4, Cole Halfacre was 1-3 with two RBIs.

Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office Warns Of North End Scam

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about a scam which has been taking place primarily in the north end of the county.
According to deputies, the group poses as a construction type company stating they will pave driveways and walkways. They quote a low price and will occasionally ask for payment in advance. If they show up to do the work, they will then state the quote needs to be changed to a substantially higher amount.
Investigators advise the work is generally completed poorly, and occasionally they do not complete the work even after payment has been received. These groups also tend to seek out older victims.
Tips to avoid this type of scam:
- Check companies with the Better Business Bureau
- Contact local established business
- Seek contractor license information
- Obtain a written contract
According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, as a general rule, if it sounds too good to be true…conduct research before exchanging funds.
Manna, Rotary Clubs Team Up To Create Nearly 80,000 Meals For The Hungry

The Combined Rotary Clubs of Pensacola (CROP) were joined with Manna Food Bank Saturday. The Fourth Annual Rotary Against Hunger Project resulted in 79,413 meals being packed for the hungry in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.
Over 300 volunteers took part in Saturday’s event, with each of the area’s 12 Rotary Clubs represented.

The Rotary Against Hunger project has become a critical part of our ability to meet the needs of the hungry throughout the year in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties,” said to MANNA Executive Director DeDe Flounlacker. “This project provides much needed food during the Winter and early Spring when donations are always low, and need is always high. Last year, MANNA provided assistance to 32,686 people, including 11,740 children. These are your neighbors and mine – folks who are the working poor, grandparents raising their grandchildren, moms and dads who do not have enough money to pay their bills and buy food for their family. Thanks to Rotary, thousands of people will be helped this year through this gift of nutritious food.”
