A home invasion suspect was shot and killed at a home in northern Santa Rosa County Saturday morning.
Gary Savoy Phillips, 38, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The shooting was reported just after 7 a.m. on Phillips Lane off Highway 4 east of Berrydale. A 911 caller reportedly told authorities that someone had been shot and killed at the home.
“The suspect broke into the home through the front door and the resident shot the suspect,” Deputy Rich Aloy, spokesperson for the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said. “Upon our arrival, it was determined the suspect was deceased. The suspect is an adult white male.”
No charges have been filed in the incident. Any future charges are dependent on the outcome of the investigation by the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.

I said earlier there would be more to this story. It seems like a lot of people on here would love the chance to get to shoot somebody. You have been congratulating someone who is probably going to turn out to be a murderer. You need to get the facts straight before you issue your opinions. Just saying.
Too bad none of the fools on here who have all but thrown a party about someone dying aren’t putting apologizing comments on here.
The criminal, home invader, sorry thief, etc. was shot in his own home set up by his own family member. Still glad he’s dead everyone ? Glad some of you aren’t cops. You’d be the ones shooting people who had a pencil saying , “I thought it was a gun”. What’s really sad is not many (if any) will apologize once they hear the news.
That’s my idea of good gun control (HITTING YOUR TARGET).
@just me
Did you read the article? He didn’t knock on the door. He kicked it in.
I would like to start by saying, no one dying is something to praise about even if they are a criminal or committing criminal activity.. and my heart goes out to all of his family and loved ones.. On the other hand the person who had a door between him and the deceased ,had a woman and children and himself to protect.. The deceased choose to kick in a door, and it was with no good intent.. So with that being said he did what any man or woman would do to protect himself and everyone in the house.. My heart hurts also because he now has to live with the fact that he took a man’s life and it doesn’t matter what the reason is for anyone having to take another humans life.. It’s going to affect him and his family and the deceases family.. This is a ugly world we live in and it is sad that times have come to things like this.. One minute you are having a great day and in the blink of an eye everything can change.. I pray that God helps Gary’s family fine peace and also the man and his family get through this and still be whole on the other side.. All the comments I have read not one of them mention God , and I know he is going to show up for both of these families.. May God be with all of you and your families this Christmas season..
We can fix anything except for one thing and that is when somebody dies; we can’t fix that.
You are correct that there is more to the story. And let’s hope the good commenters on this article never find themselves in the deceased shoes. Remember people Dead men tell no tales.
I m sorry some seem to think this situation is deserving praise. No matter what the situation was some person lost his life. I can t imagine the gentleman that was put in this position is celebrating. He had the right to protect his family and he did, but happy about it. I think not. He needs prayers to help him to adapt to what he had to do.
As it turns out there is more to this story. I won’t go into any details just wait until the investigation is complete. I will however give you a hint. Note the name of the deceased is Phillips and the road the house is located on is Phillips Lane. So just wait until all the facts come out and you’ll see there is more to this story….
Karma no where in the story did i read it was a violent crime. Not saying i wouldnt have shot and killed the perp myself..but it wouldnt be something i was happy and singing about and im sure if any of you that have had to kill someone feels the same way.
I support the decision of this homeowner to stand his ground and protect his family/property of harm or theft. Taking the life of another is a heavy burden regardless of the circumstances. I also expect the deceased has family that is heartbroken over the decisions and ultimately death of their loved one. A lesson to be learned by anyone venturing down the wrong path in life. It’ll lead you farther than you ever planned to go. Possibly the grave!
Now THAT’S a well trained gun! Great story with a perfect ending!
@Robert; why do you say you bet there is more to this story? Do you have any information that we don’t know about?
As far as I can deduce from the story is that a known criminal, with a large criminal history, did what he does. A Berrydale citizen did what he does..protects his family. The dirtbag lost, the good citizen won. See, this is good vs evil and good prevailed.
Yeah, it’s sad that a life was lost, but the dead man chose his path, not the good citizen. And as far as other comments here about the bad guy and his family are concerned, too bad, so sad. Really, it is.
I keep my Door is locked to protect CRIMINALS.
@justme
Perhaps if you are ever in the position where you become the victim of a violent crime, then maybe you would better understand the celebration and praise.
What do you wanna bet there is more to this story? We’ll see.
Cry on someone elses’ shoulder, JustMe. I’m very happy with the outcome.
Ending the life of a human is tragic…ending the life of an animal predator in defense of a human is cause for celebration.
Sounds like people have had enough and are very angry. People naturally want to defend themselves, and many are getting guns. Still nothing to be happy about. Sad, the world we live in.
hear ye! hear ye! I declare this home owner free of property taxes this year! and give him a key to the county, and give him a parade.
It is sad that this man choose the path he did. This should be a lesson for those who want to try taking from those who worked and earned them.
God bless this homeowner………..man im praying for you………you did what you had to do……….love you man
When seconds count, unfortunately LEO can be minutes away. With being all scary and biblical, it’s only going to get worse.
How is this a happy ending? Some of you people never cease to amaze me with the comments. Ending ones life no matter why, how, or what the circumstances is not something to praise and be happy about. By all means we should defend ourselves and property but one can do that and still be thoughtful of the family that is ripped apart right now.
arm yourselves. this is only going to get worse. this guy probably has a criminal record and has been turned loose on society. if we keep putting these people away permanently, we may slow crime down.
I love stories with happy endings.
If it is indeed determined that it was a home invasion. God bless these victims, and God bless the Second Amendment, and unfortunately for the intruder, not only is he now dead, but probably in hell in torment!!
That qualifies the homeowner as citizen of the jear in Jay.
As we say here in Berrydale…..”We are 911″……
That is one of the best ways to rehab a criminal. Does the homeowner need a replacement bullet? Sad state we live in when a homeowner has to shoot someone in order to defend their property and personal safety.
Prayers for all those affected by this incident.
Hope it didn’t mess up his carpet.
Recently had thief or thieves do the same to my front door, fortunately for them I was not home.
Kudos to the homeowner for lawfully protecting his property. Maybe this will send a message to other thieves.
Yeah!!!! For that homeowner
As a homeowner we have decided to do the same.
Yep, that’s way we do it ’round here. It’s sad someone made the decision to risk his life over whatever he thought he’d steal, but play with fire…
Too sad for the family of the deceased. Please pray for them. Maybe the word will get out for those too sorry to work and try to take from those who work hard for what they have. Way to go homeowner!!! Won’t have to waste no taxpayers money
