One Injured When Vehicle Struck By Train In Atmore

November 8, 2015

One person was injured when a train slammed into their vehicle early Saturday evening in Atmore.

A Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck pulling a small trailer was struck by the eastbound CSX freight train about 5:30 Saturday night at Atmore’s Wilson Avenue crossing.  The pickup truck came to rest upside down a short distance from the crossing.

The driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. His name has not been released. No one on the train was injured.

The relatively short CSX train with two locomotives came to a stop about a half mile away from the collision. The train blocked the Wilson Avenue, Trammell Street and Main Street crossings as the accident was investigated the train inspected.

Further details have not been released by Atmore Police or CSX.

Even if the lights were not working the driver has the responsibility to stop, look and listen. A train close enough to someone that they are hit is certainly close enough to be seen and heard….I mean they are sorta big and loud. Flashing lights are extra and needed only because some refuse to use common sense.

@fam maybe you should direct your attention elsewhere. Maybe it is you who is playing. Fact just as others have stated there are warning devices installed at every crossing. If the fact of the matter is that the lights were not on there were other signs to denote there were tracks there. Did this person not stop, look, and listen. The engine has cameras on board that has a wide range of vision. I’m sure if the light were not on it will be known. Also if the person didn’t stop and tried to beat the train, well sir that will be known also. Hedge your bets because I guarantee the railroad has already. Trains don’t play on the tracks. Noone has time enough to wait, but loved ones will still be waiting when you don’t make it home.

Its amazing today with all of the safety devices a railroad crossings people are getting hit, its not the train is leaving the tracks (Like the cartoons!!) to hit you then getting back on and going on their merry way.

This person was more than lucky because my Dad was killed many years ago at the Nokomis crossing and his car was not nearly as torn up as this one was;however there was such a bad curve on the RR track and neither the train nor my Dad could see around that curve. Shortly after we insisted the train co. Remove that curve and they did. My Dad was instantly killed and that was a terrible thing our little family had to go thru. God has some work for this driver that was spared in Atmore last night. My sweet Dad was only 43 years old.

Please note that the train horn was blowing multiple times(1), ditch lights were flashing (2), engine headlights were on bright(3), engine bell was ringing(4), yellow round train crossing sign 300ft from crossing(5), white railroad crossing sign painted on street 100 ft from crossing (6), white solid line which indicates where to stop 25 ft from railroad tracks (7), railroad cross buckel sign at railroad crossing (8), railroad warning bell on crossing gate (9) red flashing 12″ lights on crossing gate sign (10) , crossing arm with red flashing warning lights (11). That is 11 different warnings and laws that he violated. I’m glad he survived but remember, there are two other people who were involved that will never forget this unfortunate event, the engineer who did everything possible to avoid harming anyone and the conductor who had the fun task of climbing off the train to see if there were any injuries or dead people and call for help. Lets not forget that all of Atmore was at great risk if this accident would have caused the train to derail as a result of an emergency stop. .. So its true, if you tie, you die when it comes to trains. Remember, even if the crossing gate isn’t working, there are many other warning devices that tells you a train is coming.

“Playing” on the tracks?? Maybe you don’t realize but the men on the train stop when they are told to stop and go when they are told to go. This is all run by a crew in Atlanta. There are a lot of changes going on with the railroad and remember these people are just doing their jobs and what they have been instructed to do. I’m sure they aren’t just playing and blocking the tracks for the fun of it.

I know this man & he says there wasnt any lights on flashing so he was going over the tracks!! …….. Maybe something malfunctioned witht he warning system on the tracks. But yes God was with him.. it couldve been much worse.Maybe if these people would STOP “Playing” on the tracks I always see the trains just sitting and most of the time no lights are flashing yet the trains is sitting dead still Blocking the crossing!!!!!!!!!! I pray they get this fixed bc again it couldve been much worse.

Did I read that right? “Injuries that were NOT considered life threatning”. God was definetely watching over this person! PRAISE GOD!

Please everyone remember, those flashing red lights at the RR crossings are not a suggestion. Dont try to beat the train. Your life is not worth those extra few minutes you might save. Stop. Wait. Finish that text you didnt do while driving, but wanted to. Adjust your radio station, close your eyes for a minute. Practice your yoga meditation. Pick your nose. Just chill for a few. Do something, anything, but run those lights! This could have, by the look of that truck should have, ended in tragedy. Only Gods grace saved this person. Dont take that chance. Somebody needs you, even if you dont know it. :’(
