Escambia County Set To Pick New Jail Location Thursday

November 10, 2015

The Escambia County Commission will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to approve one of three proposed sites for the construction of a new Escambia County Jail.

One year ago, the county was looking at 1o possible sites for the new jail, including locations in Molino and Cantonment. Now, the three sites under consideration are the Palafox and Airport Boulevard site, the Brent Lane site,  and the Mid-town Commerce site. Facts, along with pros and cons, for each site, are as follows, according to a county consultant:

Build the scumbag criminals a jail downwind of the landfill.

All county meetings are open to the public (with the exception of certain rare types of meetings between between commissioners and their attorney).

The county needs a new jail and I believe we all can agree on this issue. Now how the county goes about it is up for debate. I would urge the BOCC to pick a site that does not remove property from the tax roll. Of the locations listed for consideration, there is no mention of the lost property tax revenue to the county for the two private property purchases. It does list a low ball figure on how much they expect to pay for the land in the “avg. appraised value.” This of course does not consider the ambulance chasing lawyers who’ll surely jump in to feed at the government trough and get the highest possible price for the private property. So the true cost is really unknown and hidden from the public. Use the Mid Town location or as Bob C said, fix the drainage problem and rebuild on the current site. In the end the county will have to fix the drainage in the current old location anyway.

Mid-town is only site worth building on. Current site and main jail are a disaster area. This has taken way too long while we pay other counties to house our inmates. The BOCC has completely botched running the jail. Gene Valentino continued to brag about this disaster! Well done Gene!

I would vote for the Brent Lane site, its is the best one if they ever have to expand and not near a railroad to escape on. Plus, they could build the huge water retention pond they are going to need.

Wish they would tear down the old one and remove all the debris. Its an eyesore and Lord only knows what varmits, critters, vermin, mold and other disgusting things are all living & growing & multiplying over there.
Which means the Heath Department and Nursing home and other county buildings that are right there will be infested shortly if they aren’t already. Which means more taxpayer money to get rid of that issue. County Commision needs to get with it and CLEAN UP Escambia County, even if it means they need to put on their gloves and grab the lysol or a flame thrower.

Where is Sheriff Joe Arpaio when you need him. He would know what to do in this situation!

Why not use the CURRENT Site?
Gotta fix the drainage in that area anyway as not just the Jail was flooded in April of 2014.
Neighborhoods with families were flooded too.
    FIX the drainage problems….
Do NOT have a “basement” in the new building on the old site.
County OWNS the current jail site so NO NEW Property to be purchased.
Using the Current Site means NO Additional County Property that is Unused.

Drainage fixed – New Building – No Basement – No Taxpayer $ $ $ spent on a “new” site – No Additional Surplus Property – Too Many GOOD reasons to use the current jail site.

The Mid-Town Commerce Site, no doubt!

Still, unless Camp 5 already built more facilities since I last saw it, I don’t see why adding on to it would not be best. Yes, I know it is a longer drive to the courthouse, so what? A lot of appearances are by video nowadays anyway.

The Airport Blvd. Site & the Brent Lane Site are not really feasible, they have neighborhoods in those locations, an old toxic dump site does not (at least I hope not).
