Three Jail Locations Discussed At Escambia Town Hall Meeting
October 28, 2015
Escambia County held a special town hall meeting Tuesday to present three proposed sites for a new jail to the public and answer questions.
The county is considered three sites for the new Escambia County Jail: the Palafox and Airport Boulevard site, the Brent Lane site, and the Mid-town Commerce site.
The Board of County Commissioners is expected to vote on the jail site on Thursday, November 12, at 5 p.m., during a specially-called Board meeting.

I also have a HUGE problem with the fact that all three proposed sites are near schools. My child attends Brown Barge Middle, and I would not feel comfortable having criminals right next door… not to mention the negative impact the jail will have on nearby businesses. Also, why build a jail on a main roadway like Airport Blvd?? That is a direct road for Sacred Heart employees, like myself. I personally do not want to pass by a jail every day on my way to work! Why don’t they build it AWAY from citizens?? Escambia County is huge… I am sure they could find a spot way out in the middle of nowhere. Why does the jail have to be built in the middle of the city? All 3 sites are preposterous! It is clear the county leaders are not thinking about it’s good, upstanding citizens. Why should we have to be punished into looking at an eye sore such a jail every day? I want to stay as far away as possible from that place! With a jail, comes more crime, and poverty…something Escambia County has enough of. And what are they planning on doing with the old jail? Letting is sit and rot, like so many other abandoned buildings in this County??
This is not an issue that should be taken lightly.
I find it unsettling that all three locations are next door neighbors with schools.
You are not only sending money to Santa Rosa, you are sending it to Walton County. Here is your issue, the BOCC should not be in the jail business. Give the jail back to the Sheriff who has the knowledge of operations and can keep a better eye on the budget.
I’m surprised there is no mention as to how near or far these sites are to the courthouse. Inmates are bused to the courthouse multiple times a day, surely that should be a factor in this decision?
It would be illogical to build a jail by Camp 5, that would be a 45 minute drive for the officers, not to mention a safety issue. You arrest a belligerent man then drive 45 minutes to get him booked in? The prisoners at Camp 5 are done with their court phase (at least before the jail explosion) so they no longer need transportation to and from the courthouse. There is also not much land available surrounding Camp 5, the area has grown very quickly, if they wanted to build a jail there they should have bought up land 10-20 years ago.
Please excuse the error; The super fund site being considered IS NOT located in the flood plain. The article mentioned super fund site, and my thoughts went to the other one located on Main Street. Thanks
The “Mid Town” site is also located in an area that regularly floods, and if I am not terribly mistaken, it is in the 20ft evacuation area for hurricanes. Has our esteemed county commission thought of the possibility of having to evacuate their new jail every time we get a hard rain, or have hurricane warnings posted. Who with any common sense would even consider such a site?
Let’s build it on the “super fund ” site. The possibilities are endless. The ambulance chasing lawyers and the justice dept. could be kept busy for years suing the county over exposing prisoners to the toxins present there. Locating there could also work to lover the recidivism rate, dying criminals would be less likely to commit more crimes.
Nobody wants a jail bringing down their property values, why not just add on to Camp 5 & be done with it? Yes, locking people up is a fast growing, profitable business, so the money to build should be there to the nth power.
There is no problem here, only how fast & how big it can be built. And don’t tell me the county does not already own PLENTY of land this can go on. This area is chock full of morons running around like idiots breaking the law, & the county gets money for housing them, everybody in the system from the highest judge down to the lowliest correctional facility custodian should be making a good living, & if not it’s bcuz somebody is being greedy. Same reason many areas here look so bad & South Florida looks so fancy, greed.
Maybe break out a new turnip green deal making pot and buy the old soccer complex
Again
Why not stop ignoring the fact the current jail never flooded except for the basement. You don’t have to spend millions for property just rebuild without a basement.
Too simple, I know.
that right build it north of 9 mile i live north of 9 mile and i am tired of everything that the south end dont want they send it to the north end we have the road camp in cantonment and they move OLD STINKY from down town to cantonment i am tried of being dump on as for the site with the oak trees on it cut them down why not cut all the old oaks i mean who wants to look at these beautiful trees when we can have a jail to look at why not use the old cement property after all out of sight out of mind
There’s a NIMBY in every crowd.
Why must the jail be placed within the city limits of Pensacola? There are many sites North of 9Mile or even Cantonment. Property is cheaper and away from populous areas.
The jail will be built on a part that was not polluted. This is a no brainier to build on the Mid-town. Only people complaining are the two property owners who won’t be able to gouge the county and sell their property. I am glad they can re-use that site for something productive. They need to go ahead and build the whole thing and not piecemeal this. The main jail needs a ton of money just to keep using. Build it all and stop sending our money to Santa Rosa to house inmates.
A large barge offshore would make a good jail.. After a few storms they would never want to go back there
And the answer is…Site #3. It may be more expensive at first but the lawsuits that will follow for years and years if built on a superfund site will be far more costly.
