Giant Equipment Trailer Travels Through North Escambia; Parked In Century (With Gallery)

October 23, 2015

A giant piece of equipment being moved from the port of Pensacola to the Georgia Pacific mill in Brewton passed through the North Escambia area overnight and is now parked in Century, within sight of the state line.

The generator turbine is on a trailer that is 18-feet wide, almost 25-feet tall and 173.5-feet long.  Along the way, utility crews were forced to lift, pull or remove and estimated 400 obstructions such as power and phone lines. Some residents were without power for an hour or two overnight due to the transport, but most the of the power lines were moved “live” without service interruptions.

The trailer left a Highway 29 weigh station in Cantonment about 9 p.m. Thursday.  By 4:30 a.m. Friday, the giant generator had passed through the intersection of East Highway 4 and Highway 29,  barely clearing a red light being held by a crane.  By 5:30 a.m. a decision had been made not to continue into Alabama.  The trailer will be parked until at least Sunday night on an empty lot in Century, just south of the state line. At last report, neither state will allow the trailer to move over the weekend, until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Another large generator is still at the Port of Pensacola awaiting transport to Brewton. On a trailer, it will  be 18-feet wide, 18.5-feet high and 192.5-feet long when it passes through the area, likely sometime next week, on the same route.

NorthEscambia.com will update the story with any additional schedule details as they become available.

From what we were told, the cost of this equipment & its hauling, will be a drop in the bucket, compared to what it will make GP….Not sure of exact cost, but well worth it we (concerned citizen group) were told.

Thanks to those that put century down about the turbine generator. None of the copper or anything at that matter. Just because there r a few bad apples in century doesn’t mean that everybody in the town is…. just makes me so si k

The trailer had to stop because their permits in Florida and Alabama ran out. Alabama DOT would not let them cross the line. They will stay moving again Sunday Night. The mill in Brewton is also renting a huge crane by the day to move everything when it gets there.

Beautiful sight! I watched the turbine generator traveling in Molino for awhile last night…then took Hwy 95 to get home; no traffic issues there.

This is exciting for Georgia Pacific and the surrounding areas!

To George. I agree it should be guarded being so close to the Alabama line.

We watched the traffic on 29N behind this thing for hours last night. Folks, you DO know that you can take one of the roads to the right on northbound 29 and take 95A north until you get around the truck hauling this thing? Don’t sit in line when you can bypass it by doing that.

I don’t know why this would be a traffic problem, it’s been on this web site, News journal and channel 3 news. Dates, routes, times etc…

That was the longest most dangerous 3 hours ever those truck drivers was tired and people was switching from lane to lane and we was already bumper to bumper it was horrible

We have seen this piece of equipment up close, no obvious guards or security anywhere around it.
However, for those of you concerned about the safety of this steam generator, I do not think anybody is going to haul it off in a Wal-Mart buggy.

Would really like to see it being hooked up and running.

Last night on Highway 29 11:00pm was a nightmare! It’s a shame someone didn’t think to move traffic over to the other side of 29 so that traffic could move one lane going in either direction instead of holding up traffic. My family was behind this thing for over an hour before we were able to find a side road that could take us home. School and work the next morning! Very poor planning.

I bet the trailer has to be brought in on other trailers and then assembled onsite.
Or maybe it folds up somehow to go down the road empty.

I hate to say it, but where they say it’s parked is in the open but it’s also open to be picked over, vandalized, or any other nefarious act. Hope they have some kind of detail keeping watch over it.

What did this move cost G-P?

  17. Just Saying on October 23rd, 2015 8:57 am

To George…..I don’t know about that; it did sit in Molino overnight and was okay. I think it will be as safe in Century also!

  18. sickofpolitics on October 23rd, 2015 8:49 am

Sad but I agree with George….needs to b guarded around clock til Sunday nite….could they have made arrangements to park at Whataburger….if would fit….so would b in well lit area.

  19. George on October 23rd, 2015 8:15 am

If they leave that thing overnight in Century it better be guarded or every bit of copper will be stripped off when they come back for it!
