Armed Robbery Suspect Dead Following Police Chase From Flomaton

September 14, 2015

An armed robbery suspect was killed in an Okaloosa County wreck following a police chase out of Flomaton, AL, that began a short period of time after the armed robbery of a restaurant.

Two black males wearing some type of clothing over their face held up the Church’s Chicken in Flomaton about 10:10 p.m. Sunday, according to Flomaton Police Chief Bryan Davis. One suspect was described as wearing a blue hoodie and armed with a small handgun, while the second suspect was wearing a red hoodie. Both fled the restaurant on foot following the robbery.

Flomaton Police, the Escambia County (AL) Sheriff’s Office, the Escambia County (FL) Sheriff’s Office and K-9 teams from the Century Correctional Institution, Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore and the Escambia County (FL) Road Prison worked to establish a perimeter around the restaurant. K-9 teams were on the ground conducting a search, Davis said.

High Speed Police Chase

The Escambia County (AL)  Sheriff’s Office said in written statement that one of their deputies observed a small red truck with no headlights moving at extremely slow pace coming out of a side street behind Church’s Chicken. The vehicle refused to stop and proceeded across the state line into Escambia County, FL, and turned on Highway 4 and headed into Santa Rosa County.

The truck, driven by 35-year old Jermey Montrell Elliot of Flomaton, continued at about 100 miles per hour across Santa Rosa County and into Okaloosa County, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office report. An Okaloosa County deputy reported that he met the vehicle on Highway 4 being pursued by three Escambia County (AL) deputies. The Okaloosa deputy was advised by his sergeant  that he was to assist and not become directly involved in the pursuit; the Okaloosa deputy stayed one-half to three-quarters of a mile behind.

The vehicle crashed about 12:30 a.m. at Georgia Avenue and Dairy Road in Baker, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Elliot was pronounced deceased on the scene. The FHP said Elliot’s 2001 Dodge Dakota collided with several trees and overturned near Baker School. Elliot was not wearing his seat belt. According to the FHP report, there were no passengers in the vehicle.

According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office there were two loaded pistols, one shotgun, a loaded AR-15, several rounds of ammunition and a brown backpack containing what was believed to be marijuana found inside Elliot’s truck. Elliot also had about $2,000 on his person. Another pistol was located outside of the vehicle, according to an incident report.

Authorities also located what appeared to be crystal methamphetamines, cocaine, scales and prescription medication in the truck, according to an Escambia County (AL) Sheriff’s Office press release.

The guns and other  evidence were turned over to the Escambia County (AL) Sheriff’s Office.

Late Monday afternoon, Davis confirmed that Elliot was a suspect in the Church’s Chicken robbery. So far, there’s no word on the whereabouts of the second suspect.

Any additional details will be posted as they are made available.

One thing I still can’t understand is if it took a little over an hour and a half to chase Jeremy to okaloosa county where he wrecked how could he have been going over a hundred miles per hour? I drove 70 all the way from century after what I heard and it took me less than thirty minutes to get there and I even stopped at all caution lights and stop signs how is that possible?

  3. Really?! on September 18th, 2015 4:04 am

    @ RealTalk
You said “By the way it’s not even safe stopping for law enforcement now if you really wanna be honest. I’m just saying they taking there jobs overboard now and days. They pulling people over killing them and all they get is time on the porch with pay.”

I mean really?! What cop do you know that pulled over someone and killed them in Escambia County Alabama? This is just being used as an excuse. If you don’t feel safe pulling over on a dark road at night, call their dispatch center and let them know that you will pull over as soon as you get to a public place. They can relay it to their officers. You don’t just speed up and keep going through several counties and another state.

Maybe he was a good guy. The article didn’t say he wasn’t. I do know that if you are not doing anything wrong, then you have no reason to run. The police did not “kill” him. He killed himself. He was going at an incredible high rate of speed.

Some of you said that the police should have just backed off. Well, if the police had and Mr. Elliott had hit another vehicle and killed them or injured them, then you would say that the police should have done their job and pursued the chase. The police cannot win for losing.

Mr. Elliott may not have robbed Church’s, but the traffic accident was 100% his fault. His death, was 100% his fault.

To the family of Mr. Elliott,
I did not know him, but I do want to offer my condolences. No one deserves to lose a family member like this. I will keep all of you in my prayers. God Bless You.

First of all wrong is wrong right is right this young man was in the wrong Robbing church’s chicken and the young person with him was and is just as wrong as the driver. The law didn’t kill this guy..this guy killed his self…if he would have only STOPPED when order to he would be alive tonight so KUDOS TO COPS also that’s less dope and guns off the streets and a fool off the highways to make them a tad bit safer. Speeding like that only does one thing it KILLS. So he killed his self

RIP J. All who knew you knew you were a good guy. I truely believe you didn’t rob the Church’s. My heart goes out to your family and girls. Fly high man

  6. Mom on September 16th, 2015 1:50 pm

I agree with seriously 100%. Regardless if he robbed churches he most likely is a drug dealer running from the law because of all they found in his vehicle. No one will have scales for any other reason. The only good from this is that he did not kill innocent lives while eluding the police officers. The law is not to blame here but the deceased and all of his bad choice are. But this seems to be the norm around this country….blame others for your mistakes. Good job to our law enforcement and glad none of you were harmed.

Ms. Elliott…We are all so very sorry for your loss, if you or your family need anything at all, your BFC family is here for you. Know we are praying for you and sending love.

  8. paul on September 16th, 2015 6:19 am

Sorry to the family for their loss. But to those in the family asking others not to judge, maybe if they had been more critical of the choices he made instead of enabling him by turning a blind eye. Maybe he would not have felt the need to run from the police. Better involvement by family and friends to encourage good choices may have saved this man’s life how many others do you know that are mixed up in drugs etc. Being an unlicensed recreational pharmacist clearly has some down sides.

  9. Seriously on September 16th, 2015 5:26 am

On august 22 1975 a Salt Lake City police pursued a vehicle that refused to stop for a minor traffic offense. He was caught after lengthy pursuit and after the officer and others where put in harms way. The suspect was arrested and the vehicle searched. After the search the officer called investigators about several suspicious items found in the vehicle. That traffic stop resulted in the capture of a man responsible for the rape, torture, and murder of at least 30 daughters, sisters, aunts, friends, and loved but no one was sorry that Tef Bundy was brought to justice.

No one was complained when Timothy mcveigh was arrested on a traffic stop after killing those innocent loved ones in Oklahoma City. Randy Kraft and many other serial killers, rapist, gangsters, bombers, and violent felons have been caught because of traffic stops by patrolmen and women across this country.

To all those who say police killed this man or should have called off the case call on of the fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, friends, or children who where the victs left behind to grief the victims of Ted bundy, Timothy mcveigh, or randy kraft and explain to them how the police should have just never even bothered at all to stop these men.

No life should be lost needlessly and all life should be mourned but the police have a duty to do and every citizen in this country has a responsibility under the law to obey the police. The man ran because he did not want have to answer to the laws of this country for his decisions to break the law, and instead he will have to answer to The Lord for his choices.

May The Lord be just and merciful to him and may God comfort his family and loved ones during this difficult time. But this is the fault of Elliot for his choices not anyone else.

@Chris maybe someone can hack a facebook page, but what about the 50 or so other people and cameras that saw him at Odom’s bar from 9:30 until after 11 oclock???? I say this to all of you judgemental people out there in the world…. If you were not there to see it, stop condemning!!!! Regardless of whatever, one of God’s creations is gone. He was a son, a father, a brother, and definitely a really good friend, and above all else a human being. Everybody has mistakes in their life that they wish they could erase, its just that for him it was too late. NOBODY IS A PERFECT HUMAN BEING!!!! THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT HERE HURTING OVER THIS LOSS WHO LOVED JEREMY UNCONDITIONALLY!!! Maybe a lot of you don’t know what that means because you’re too busy pointing fingers and judging people. Judge not, lest you Will be judge!!!!!! A LIFE WAS STILL TAKEN FROM THIS EARTH AND HIS FAMILY IS STILL GRIEVING! R. I. P. JEREMY ELLIOT!!! I KNOW I AM ONE OF TGE MANY PEOPLE WHO WILL MISS YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I LOVE YOU AND IF I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ELSE, I KNOW WITH EVERY FIBER IN MY SOUL YOU DID NOT ROB CHURCH’S!!! AND YOU BEST BELIEVE THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT BECAUSE IT IS SPOKEN!!!!!

  11. Concerned citizen on September 15th, 2015 8:25 pm

To the name “I hope the family of Jeremy gets justice” Do you think its ok to ride around at night with no headlights on and carry ILLEGAL DRUGS?? I am sure he was a fine fellow! But when the cops try and stop you you shouldn’t run from them. You are putting me at risk, your family’s at risk and anyone else on the road at risk especially when an armed robbery just took place. What happened to him is the risk your willing to take when you do ILLEGAL THINGS. So sorry to the family for there loss.

Jeremy “Bama” Elliot was my homeboy. I had met him when he made his way out to Denver. It’s very sad to hear of this news and my heart goes out to his children and family, y’all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Bama was a good man no matter what! RIP “BAMA” I LOVE U BRO!!

  13. Blessed on September 15th, 2015 5:43 pm

To the family I am sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. This is not a time to point fingers, accuse or degrade this person. Life is about mistakes, we live and learn. Some of the comments are so rude and disrespectful. I don’t care what he had in his vehicle,it still doesn’t make it right on the law enforcements part to chase some one into another state, this high speed chase went on for two hours, certainly if they were chasing him, the police I’m sure called in the tag number and the description of his vehicle, I’m pretty sure if he had committed a crime, he would have been caught sooner or later. It’s just so sad that people aren’t taking in consideration of his family. It’s not about who was in the wrong, a person loss his life because of negligence. We all have children/family members, people need to be mindful of how they accuse/judge one of God’s children. This world would be a better place if it didn’t have ignorant uncaring people in it. I didn’t know Jeremy personally but I know his sister and she’s a very nice and friendly person. May God bless his loved ones, give them strength Almighty God during their time of bereavement.

  16. Old Coach on September 15th, 2015 12:43 pm

There was a quote about the deceased (God rest his soul) never leaving home without having $1,000 on his person. Is that correct? Where was he employed? Makes sense if he always had a large amount of money on his person he wouldn’t necessarily have to rob a business. Still, where does his money come from?

  17. Gabriele on September 15th, 2015 12:31 pm

Praying for the friends and family especially his mother Mrs. Vera, his father, Jessica, Jennifer, JJ, Brandy and his kids. May the Lord comfort your hearts and be your strength. Jeremy was such a fun loving person. He will be missed by many. I do know he isn’t a robber and wouldn’t do such a thing. We all have made mistakes and decisions that can cause people to become very judgemental and unsympathetic towards us so please stop with the bashing. Yes he made a bad choice but we all have and do so on a daily basis. Good thing the Lord is a loving forgiving God because we would all be TRASH burning in hell. He wasn’t trash or a thug he was a human being just like you and I. People please show some respect for his family! R.I.P Jeremy(all drinks on you)

I didnt know him. I dont care about anything but facts. Fact one, he ran from the police. Fact two, he had numerous illegal items in his possesion. Fact three, most important in my eyes, if he had not run, he would not be dead.

People, do no run from the Police. Running makes you look guilty. If I get pulled over I sit quietly, with my window down and hands on the top of the steering wheel. Non aggressive posture. Answers are yes and no. Polite,at all times. If I get a ticket I can fight it in court. Of course, Im not a criminal, so I dont have a guilty conscience.

    Prayers for his family.

  21. Trey on September 15th, 2015 7:09 am

Don’t break the law, don’t run from the police, and you won’t end up dead like this. It’s pretty simple. He can be the nicest guy in the world, but he was obviously a criminal dirtbag. Sorry to his family, but good riddance to this leech on society. Less drugs and guns on the streets. Good job to the cops taking out the trash.

  26. Knowthetruth on September 14th, 2015 11:20 pm

First off if you don’t know Jeremy I could see your point that he looks really bad. But I do know jeremy. He made alot of bad choices and did a lot of dirt. However he wouldn’t rob a freaking churches chicken for the petty cash the would have when that man never left his house with less then a $1,000. And its impossible since he was at the bar with tons of witnesses. Jeremy wasn’t perfect but he was a good person at heart. He helped me out when I needed to pay a bill and had no where to turn. He always had a smile on his face and he always had a way with gettin ppl to talk to him. He was never judging. He didn’t care what you looked like or the walk of life you came from. And ppl that are saying he hated law enforcement. ..that’s a lie…he didn’t hate me . Jeremy didn’t like getting caught or being introuble. Not all law enforcement are out to get you or bad ppl. They have a job to do just like anyone else. I didn’t agree with his life style and he never told me what he did or didn’t do because I didn’t what to be around or involved. He made sure he never put anyone else in his business.anyone thst knew him knew that if he thought he was gonna get pulled over he said he would run. Doesn’t make him a bad person or make him apart of the robbery and it doesn’t mean the cops were wrong for doing there job.jeremy wouldn’t like all of this hate and anger. He would want ppl to remember him for the friend he was and know that if he was going out he would be in a blaze of glory. Pray for his friends and family instead of gossip about his choices. No one in this world is sin free. Remember that .

I am Thankful for the cops in this circumstance because they came in and stopped my husband and I from going through a green light!!! Which if In fact we would of went through we’d probably be dead now because Mr. Elliot ran the light At a high speed and was being followed by several cops. Yes it’s a sad day when anyone loses a Son, Father ect (I know first hand) but it could have been more then one life lost!!!

@RealTalk – You say don’t judge him and then say the police are running around pulling people out of their cars and “killing them.” Shootings by police are at a 40 year low. Most that have been shot are shooting, battering, and/ or resisting the police. Some problems fix themselves.

In hopes at least one reader will learn something from this… I say, don’t try to elude the police! Especially if you’re innocent! Even if you’re guilty of something -resisting and eluding is not worth the risk of potential negative, and many times tragic consequences. So many are on the cop bashing wagon these days. Here’s a tip: If you don’t want to be troubled by the police- don’t break the law! They have a difficult, dangerous, and low paying job that hardly anyone wants to do, but someone has too! Pray for them! I’m sorry for Jeremy’s family and friends’ loss. I pray for God to comfort and strengthen you and that you may find, see, and or feel God’s touch in your life through this tragedy.

A backpack with what appeared to be weed. $2000 on his person. 2 loaded handguns, a loaded AR15, a shotgun, and another small pistol found outside the vehicle. A drug dealer or a robber. He fled and was killed in a wreck. The article said he was a suspect. If he didn’t rob the Church’s, he still ran for reasons a law abiding citizen wouldnt have been concerned with. Sorry for his family’s loss. It’s a shame he made the choices he made in his life.

    @Kd2015
You may very well be right in your statement about this individual. I don’t know him so I can’t say what type of,person he was prior to attempting to elude the police. But, the part about judging is a bit off track. Do you make judgments about anyone? Sure you do. We don’t need to be mean spirited in our judgments of others, but we must judge others by their behavior. Would someone allow their children to play unsupervised if a registered sex offender moved into their neighborhood? I don’t think they would. So the person has made a judgment about that person. We judge murderers, rapists, and other offenders of the law for who they
You are right in that final judgment will be made by God. That judgment will be eternal. We are to judge others by the fruit they bear or by their deeds or actions. Never mean spirited and never judging when we are guilty of the same sin. Now that would be hypocritical. We should never judge by social status, race, sex in order to make someone inferior to us. We should judge behavior so we have a better chance of survival in this evil world.

WAIT! A good person wouldn’t speed down the road and jeopardize his and mine brothers and sisters on the road.RIP, but be a lesson for the next person wanting to evade

There is no possible way to be at Odom’s and Churches at the same time. So was he involved with the robbery…Umm NO. He would not steal from anyone. He would give you the shirt off his back before taking anything from anyone. He was a great guy. And he will truly be missed. There are no need for negative comments from people who didn’t know him. You have no right to judge. That’s the Lord’s job, Not everyone elses.

We were coming back from Georgia and I thank God the one police car pulled in front of my husband and I to prevent us from being hit by the others who were in pursuit! Thank you Escambia police for doing your job but also watching out for other innocent people! Running from the law never ends up good…

Either way, suspect or no suspect, you dont run from the police. The outcome is never good.

Shoot, they can a random person off the street and say they were a suspect. This guy mightve had guilty conscience, outstanding warrants, etc. I wonder if they were the same people who robbed dg back in may of last year?

Why run from the police with lights and sirens on for over 40 miles? If your life matters, follow the orders of the police and stop! Then it can be figured out.
