Northview Beats Vancleave (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs beat Vancleave, MS, Friday night 13-10 in Bratt.

After starting the season with losses to 6A teams, the win against the 4A Mississippi team was a big boost for Northview (1-3).

It’s huge, huge,” Northview Coach Sid Wheatley said.  “It’s huge for the mindset of our kids right now.”

The Chiefs were the first on the board about halfway through the first quarter on a Gavin Grant to Luke Ward pass. A two point attempt failed, and the Chiefs were up 6-0. Vancleave added a touchdown to take a 7-6 advantage.

Near the end of the third quarter, Dezmine Moorer took a handoff to move the Chiefs 62-yards and deep into Vancleave territory. Ward was then in on a 18-yard run, and Seth Killam added a good kick.

“We knew that had a big offense line and they were going to try to come out and pound it down our throats,” he said. “And they did that. And I thought our defense responded really well.”

The Chiefs will host the 1A Red Devils of Maplesville, AL, next Friday night at 7:00. Maplesville (5-1, 3-0) is about 175 miles from Bratt. The Red Devils have outscored opponents 212-89 so far this year, including shutouts of 41  and 35 points.

“We will have a very positive energy going forward….we’ve got a huge task before us next week because Maplesville (AL), I think, tries to blow up scoreboards. At least it looks like it they way they score points. We are going to build this momentum and these positive feelings we have right now, and continue to work and get better on some things.”
