Highway 29 Armed Robbery Suspect Found Passed Out In Lawn Chair

September 1, 2015

An Escambia County man was arrested Monday for the armed robbery of a Highway 29 antiques store after deputies found him passed out in a lawn chair with the loot.

William George Kunkel, 60, was charged Monday with aggravated assault, display of weapon during the commission of a felony, petit theft and robbery for the incident last Friday afternoon.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said a white male, later identified as Kunkel, entered Dixie’s Antiques and Collectibles armed with a handgun. After robbing the store of money and silver coins, Kunkel allegedly took an employee’s car keys with the intention of stealing her car.

The victim convinced him to allow her to give him a ride instead, and she drove Kunkel to the Circle K at Highway 29 and Kingsfield Road, according to investigators. Deputies were unable to locate him Friday afternoon.

Monday, deputies responded to Pauline Street in Cantonment where they found Kunkel unconscious in a lawn chair. They reported finding methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in his possession along with the silver coins taken during the antique store robbery.  For Monday’s incident, Kunkel was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At the time of his arrest, Kunkel had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation in a 1984 robbery case. He remains in the Escambia County Jail without bond.

Editor’s note: This story was updated at 1:30 p.m., Sept. 1 after the ECSO confirmed that Mr. Kunkel was located on Pauline Street in Cantonment, not Paulding Avenue.

@Dana–I know two people who go to that clinic. Both are good people with good jobs. One is an RN at a local hospital. They both became dependant on painkillers after injuries. Most people who go there work. They must because giving a friend a ride there i watched nice diesel trucks, a corvette, a couple bmw’s, and numerous run of the mill $30-40k vehicles pull in for their dose. Don’t tell me their all criminals. The probability that even 20% are is improbable. I think criminals wouldn’t want to get up at 5 am to go everyday to wait in line and pay $115/ per week for something thats weaker than they could get from one phone call at their home thats cheaper.

I’m sure having the methadone clinic up the street has nothing to do with this type of traffic in our area.

@Paul, its called “crashing” methheads do sleep when they crash off the drug. It is a sad drug, I have seen beautiful girls in their 20’s look 50 after only a few years on it.

I encourage anyone addicted to it to seek help, check yourself in somewhere. If you value your life, looks and family. There are people who really care about you and your health that will help you get away from it.

    God bless.

    @ John Sanderson
My pops worked with ECSO for 30 years retiring as an investigator. Used to talk about how fast Judge Rimmer could run and numerous funny stories about all the old schoolers like you, Mooneyham, Kilgore, Nesmith, etc. You should run for Sheriff and get things straightened out down there.
Thank you for your service to our community.

The ESCO said Paulding….but I will check when the right people are in later this morning. Paulding is down off Gulf Beach Hwy.

    >>Hummm! 1984 Warrant! 31 years! I guess it is a waste of time to have a warrant sworn out for someone. They could live out a lifetime and not get caught in Escambia County Florida.

The story does not say it was a 1984 warrant…it says it was a warrant issued in a 1984 case. The warrant was issued August 20, 2015.

It looks like he was released from prison 7/25/2012 in the ‘84 case to serve five years probation. So he was on probation until 2017.

I’m starting to think whoever said you don’t get to be old being a fool might’ve got it wrong, in some cases at least. Sad, sad. :(
