Four-Year Old Dies In Escambia Crash

September 12, 2015

A young Escambia County boy was killed in a single vehicle crash just off Scenic Highway Friday afternoon.

According the Florida Highway Patrol, four-year old Martin Hamilton was pronounced deceased at Sacred Heart Hospital following the 2:52 p.m. crash on Northpointe Parkway and Briaroak Drive.

The FHP said the accident happened when 21-year old Leandre Newson of Pensacola was traveling east on Northpointe Parkway in a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, left the roadway and struck a tree in the median. Newson and passenger Shaquna Riveria, 25, received minor injuries in the crash.

Troopers said Hamilton was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Any charges in the crash are pending the outcome of the FHP investigation.

I find it very hard to believe that the 4 year old was “properly restrained”, which would imply that he was held in place by a 5 point harness on a forward-facing child seat correctly installed to the center rear seat position in the vehicle with a tether strap. In that circumstance fatal injuries would be highly unlikely given the reported minor injury to the responsible adults in the vehicle. An adult seatbelt is NOT a proper restraint for a child, and 70% of child seats are not correctly installed and used..
