Escambia Clerk’s Office Warns Of Jury Duty Telephone Scam

September 15, 2015

The Escambia County Clerk of the Court is reporting a  telee scam that has been happening locally and across Florida.

In the scam, a person receives a telephone call informing them that they, or a close relative, did not appear for jury duty or grand jury duty. The caller then states that the individual can pay money in order to prevent the arrest of the person who supposedly failed to report for jury duty.

The Escambia County Clerk of the Court’s office said they do not make such phone calls.

Anyone that receives one of these scam calls is asked to call investigator Taylor Wells with the State Attorney’s Office at (850) 595-4261.

This still happens in the 21st century? Telemarketing, by and large, is a dead form of marketing anyhow. Millennials never answer the phone and rarely return voice mails; they’d rather have a text or email sent to them. I can see how senior citizens could be victim to this kind of thing, but everybody else…geez.

A couple of months ago I got a call from a guy with a foreign accent who told me that there would be a warrant for my arrest and that I needed to hire their attorneys and told me how to pay. When I said that this is a scam he changed his helpful demeanor and ended with a statement that they would be coming for me within 24 hours. I can see how an elderly person could be victimized by these crooks. This is a crime that I would like to see the state and federal government crack down on.

Well obviously anyone who calls asking for money is a scam. Good lord there are far too many gullible people in this world.
