Search For Possible Missing Boater

July 12, 2015

The search for a possible missing boater on Escambia Bay Saturday morning led to the recovery of a boat, but no boater.

A small boat was reported adrift in eastern Escambia Bay about 9:50. A woman pulled it in and found a cooler with half melted ice and a fishing pole that had a catfish on the line. The boat had no registration information.

Escambia Search and Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Avalon and Pace fire departments were searching the area, including a helicopter search by the Coast Guard. The search was suspended a short time later with no sign of any missing boater.

Officials said it may have been only a drifting boat.

Along with the search, ESAR located an unrelated disabled pontoon boat with four people and towed it in from the Escambia River.

A boat walked away from on purpose does not usually have a baited hook left in the water.
We were going east over the I-10 bridge at 7:30am Sat. and saw a guy cast netting with no boat in 100 yards on the southeast end of bridge and 100 yards south.
Maybe it was his and got “rescued” when he was now where to be seen?

Non-motor powered vessels less than 16 feet in length, are not required to be registered or titled in Florida. Article references small boat found adrift, no reference to a motor so may not have been required for this boat
