One Shot During Confrontation With Hunters

July 20, 2015

One person was shot after getting into an argument with hunters northeast of Munson Saturday night.

According to witness accounts, there were several individuals deer hunting the area of Green Road and Yearling Lane. A confrontation began between the group of hunters and and another individual, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said.

At one point during the confrontation, a gun was pointed at the group of hunters when a shot was heard. The individual who was pointing the gun at the group was shot with a high powered rifle during the incident, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said. The victim was airlifted to an area hospital.

The victim remained in the hospital late Sunday recovering from a gunshot wound; their exact condition was not available.

Detectives with the Santa Rosa County Sheriffs are actively working this investigation. The individual who shot the victim was identified and is being questioned about the incident.

More information has not been released.

I’m sure your grammar lesson is greatly appreciated, but this is a major problem in Blackwater Forest. Deer management doesn’t exist and the farmer is feeding the state’s deer. It’s not the farmer’s job. They work all day and have to keep the vermin away from their crops at night. It’s not a fun task. It’s exhausting and it’s discouraging. The hunters are angry and the farmer’s are helpless and then to have a “belligerent treaspasser” drive out on the property and point a gun at them is beyond ridiculous. It’s just pathetic. May God bless the farmer.

@ David Huie Green—Amazing how many never learned correct spelling or word usage in school. Many mistakes change the whole meaning of a sentence, & can be really funny! Often misused is “to” & “too”. Too, usually means “also”. Using all of the words correctly in a sentence:
They’re going to their home there too. I have been out of High School over 50 years. Don’t they teach English & Spelling anymore?

    There: not here, yonder
They’re: they are or they were
    Their: belonging to them

And while they sound alike, they’re not

Other suggestions: never point a gun at or near anyone you’re not prepared to kill
Avoid conflict if possible, ask yourself if its worth dying over or worth killing over
    Remember you may miss
    Remember you may hit
    Remember projectiles continue until stopped
    Guns jam
    Guns explode
    Cartridges misfire
People shoot those who threaten them
    Life is short
    Death is long

    David for fewer regrets
    They’re unpleasant
There are too many (didn’t touch on that form)

@Lady—Yes those deer can be very “rapid”! Rapid means fast. Did you actually mean rabid with a “b”?

  5. Lady on July 21st, 2015 5:41 pm

Fish and Wildlife have to do something to curtail deer population all over the U.S. Everyone talks about the POOR DEER but they are taking over. Farmers are trying to feed us but have to fight the animals that are growing, growing, growing. I don’t blame the people for bringing the guns on. We have rapid animals all over. It is dangerous to get out in your own yard and everyone is saying “poor animals”. It is getting down to animals or humans. Kill these deer!!!! In and Out of Season!

It’s called DEPREDATION permits. They are legal and it appears that the hunters were obeying the law and the gunshot victim was not. It’s not very smart to pull a gun on someone who has a gun. Especially when you are trespassing. Something tells me this “victim” has a shady past.

I live at the end of a dirt road surrounded by woods and had no idea that under certain circumstances deer hunting is legal year round and especially at night. While I am used to hearing gun shots in the fall I would have been quite disturbed to be awakened by gun shots close to my house. Maybe the office issuing these year round permits should notify the owners of the surrounding properties of the areas where night hunting is legal all year. I agree with :well” : to point a gun at a heavily armed group of people is not a smart idea; but then if you don’t know what is going on – to go defenseless would have been stupid also.

High fences don’t work @thinker they have been tried and the deer always find there way threw around or over some how or another…… Looks like this whole thing could have been avoided if people would have minded there own business

But hey, I’m just gonna mind my business, ‘less it affects me or mine.

Never been a fan of depradation permits.

Sounds like a bad situation all around. However, i would NEVER call anyone about anything like Jane suggests. I wouldn’t want the people i called on to find out and it come back to me or a family member. It’s NONE OF MY BUSINESS unless their on my property or somehow messing with me. BTW i dont care about seasons or anything. I will use what God has provided to feed my family and keep from going to a grocery store as much as possible. And no, i don’t need to live in Alaska or Montana, i do just fine right here. And do the same if i were a millionaire. Escambia River provides all manner of meat for my family. Actually about to eat fish right now (which we do 3 times per week). So keep your hormone grown corn products (amoung numerous other chemicals) and mind your business.

If hunting illegal does 10-20-life come into play

  13. well on July 20th, 2015 12:55 pm

May or may not have been legal but pointing a gun at a group puts them in fear for their lives.
I hope the person shot makes a full recovery.
Everyone can take several different lessons from this.

I feel like the FWC should start a program to help the farmers put up high fences around there fields and eliminate depridating all together. No I’m not an anti-hunter I hunt myself and have since I was able to carry a gun. Another solution to the problem would be to adopt Alabama’s rule of all liscenced hunters should be able to kill one doe per day during hunting season, the deer population is outrageous in Florida!

  15. Jeff on July 20th, 2015 10:56 am

Who cares what they are hunting for? People are too quick to pull a gun/trigger these days. Put the guns down and fight it out if you need to. At least everyone gets to go home afterwards.

I have fields in Chumuckla that we have legal deer depervation tags shoot them at least 3 nights a week, Have to use common sense I would never aim towards a home knowing a family could live there.. I think this might be a case of the illegal hunters possibly young teenagers thinking Munson is to far out to get caught.. If it happens I’d say call FWC tell them what kind of vehicle it is cause believe me if it’s legal when you call in you HAVE to let them know what vehicle your driving who’s with you & you have to call and check out!!! Prayers for the family

Ooooops! Deer season is closed boys and girls. Someone is going to the gray-bar motel for a while over this one. I love venison and hunting but deer season is closed in the summer for a reason.

    Idiots…..

The only one going is the guy that got shot GARY!!

  18. John on July 20th, 2015 10:14 am

Jane & Paul, It’s called a deer depredation permit. It’s completely legal and desperately needed. This man apparently threatened the hunters with a gun and they shot him. Bottom-line…..the guy was trespassing and the hunters were not. The hunters were obeying the law. Stay off the farmer’s property and don’t draw a gun and you won’t get shot. I’m pretty sure this guy won’t do it again. He’s the idiot.

Unfortunately when you call FWC, they won’t do anything…unless they see it for themselves, they won’t bother…we have had people shoot close to our house. Problem is the tags they give to stupid people…and usually land owners live elsewhere and don’t even know it is happening. bad situation all around.

  21. jeeperman on July 20th, 2015 8:12 am

Perhaps the group were hunting deer legally at night.
If they were doing so within the permit rules for “Depredating Deer Permit”.

  22. RW on July 20th, 2015 7:52 am

They’re called Deprivation tags- they are used for deer management on crop lands- Look them up on the FWC website to educate yourself :)

That is probably why these people were hunting….

  23. Adam on July 20th, 2015 6:26 am

Read it again. It’s says per witness accounts not from the hunters say. It is legal to hunt hogs year round and at night plus you use the same rifle as deer hunting.

  24. Jane on July 20th, 2015 5:35 am

It isn’t deer season yet…why are they hunting deer? Call FWC!

  25. paul on July 20th, 2015 5:27 am

    Isn’t hunting at night poaching?
