July 14, 2015

A Cantonment man has been accused of kidnapping, beating, robbing and holding another man for ransom.

Jeffrey Ervington Rivers, 33, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping an adult for ransom, grand theft and robbery with a  weapon.

The victim told Escambia County deputies that he was putting water in the radiator of his car int he parking lot of a credit union on Fairfield Drive when a man, later identified as Rivers, approached him from behind, struck him in the back with a hard object and forced him into a vehicle. He told deputies he was held hostage by Rivers inside a house on Lillian Highway, while Rivers threatened to beat and kill him.  The following day, Rivers allegedly forced the victim to call his wife and demand that $500 cash be dropped off at a Lillian Highway bar. When Rivers learned that the victim’s wife had called authorities, he allegedly beat the victim with a bat and leather strap.

Rivers then said he was going to buy drugs and then return to kill the victim. The victim was able to escape when a female in the house brought him his keys and wallet and told him leave.

The victim was able to later identity Rivers from a photo lineup, according to an arrest report.

Rivers remains in the Escambia County Jail with bond set a $125,840.

Stand your ground laws? The guy was under the hood of his car. Stand your ground would have done one thing: Given the crook access to the victims gun.

This man is an obvious danger to society. This is the type of predator that spouted the original idea of prisons, to protect the general public from violent people like him. If they let him out, there is NO JUSTICE.

My wife would spend the $500 she saved on new shoes….and buy a new house with the life insurance money.

This is so sad, I went to school with Jeff many moons ago and he was a nice (albeit troubled) kid in those days. What he did was horrific and he deserves to be in prison a LONG time as a result. I will be praying that he finds salvation and that justice will be properly served. This kind of stuff just really causes me to shake my head.

I consider the female in the house guilty also.

Saw on news where one of our wonderful FLA lawmakers wants to weaken the “Stand Your Ground” laws.
Wants to make the victim have to prove in court that they were really at threat of great bodily harm or death.
Basically, the person who Stood their Ground would be considered guilty until proven innocent.

Stand Your Ground laws would surely apply to this Rivers punk.

He has watched one to many movies. Life without parole.

Man this is nuts. I have seen numerous people with lesser charges with no bond. Granted, he’ll probably never afford the bond but thats not the point.
Good thing he didn’t get me, my wife wouldn’t have called the police as we hate to be dependent upon govt., she’d have brought her pistol.

He will be out in a year or two and back to his old ways. It’s time to take this country back.
