Frequently Incarcerated Century Man Arrested Again

June 24, 2015

A Century man with a lengthy arrest history is now back behind bars.

Ronald Berlan Newton, 54, was charged with aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, a third degree felony offense. He remains in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $100,000.

Newton had started an argument with his brother and other family members at a residence on Blackmon Street in Century, according to an arrest report, and threatened to kill his brother.  Family members said Newton picked up a metal garden tool and swung it at his brother’s head, after threatening to kill him.

Deputies said Newton stated repeatedly that his brother was lying.

Since 2007, Newton has been arrested on a long list of charges that were dropped or dismissed included aggravated assault, criminal mischief, battery, lewd and lascivious behavior victim under 18, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and contempt of court.

Newton was released from state prison in April 2012 after completing a 22 month sentence for stalking after being arrested more than a dozen times in a year. Newton was first found incompetent and remanded into the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families for evaluation, but was later found competent to stand trial.

Newton was again sentenced to prison in October 2013 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated stalking. After being released from prison, he was once again arrested for contempt of court for willfully violating an domestic violence injunction. He was released from jail on April 4, 2015.

I don’t know what the solution is but here in Pensacola we have a problem. There is a segment of our population that is not only a burden (I can live with burden, not like it but live with it) but is a menace. I live is a section of town where theft, robbery, gunfire and sirens drugs and prostitutes are a daily occurrence.

Honest people should not have to tolerate the bad behavior of a few. You have a handful in this community that are having a seriously negative impact on the quality of life of everyone else around them. It just is not right, it is not fair to the majority that just want to live their lives and raise their families in peace.

The police have failed us, the courts have failed us, the leadership has failed us. I for one would not recommend that anyone move to this town and in my opinion that is a sad state of affairs. We should be doing better not just for ourselves but for our children.

    CONSIDERING:
“Florida needs to have a “3 strikes you’re out” law. After being arrested for the third time, it’s life in prison.”

I hope you actually mean “convicted”.
It is possible to arrest someone for anything, guilty or not.
Nobody’s freedom should hinge completely on a deputy’s honesty.

Plus, there’s crimes and there’s crimes.
Some crimes even done ten times wouldn’t justify spending the rest of your life in prison.
Other crimes should never see freedom to commit the second.

    David for justice for all
    and improvements in sanity

Thank you William2, my thoughts exactly. It seems that society has gotten very tolerant of those that break the law and they make excuses for them so they can do it again and again. If he is not truly mentally ill then he needs to be in prison long term. If this man is truly mentally ill, refuses to be compliant with meds and is a danger to others then he needs to be place in a State Mental Hospital long term. Either way he needs to be out of society permanently.

It is sad that it has to come to this. His family have been reaching out to the courts for years. All they did was arrest him and release him back to society. Prison/Jail is not the answer. This is a mental disturbed person that was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia disorders. He should b
on medication for the rest of his is life, he doesn’t. He should be in a mental hospital for a long term as recommended by his family.
Hopefully this can help the judges with a clearer background on Mr. Newton.
    Way over due.

This man was in the final stages of working on his GED. Now all this happens and derails his chances and hopes of living a productive life. Sources have said, the system is to blame and he just was misunderstood in his actions.

@Daquan If you refuse to live in a civilized manor and choose a life of habitual crime society has not only the right but the duty to do something about it. Those of us who work, pay taxes, and lead a relatively quite law abiding life do not have to put up with those who don’t.

I dont think the lack of prosecution of many of these cases can be blamed solely on the State Attorney office. Its hard to prosecute a case where the victim chooses not to cooperate or witnesses avoid the subpoena from a civil process server so they dont have to give a deposition or testify in court.

In looking at the online court records, it appears that when victims and witnesses cooperate cases are prosecuted and the judicial system imposes an adequate jail sentence.

When people complain that sentences arent long enough, the judicial system is often imposing a sentence that fall within a standard set of sentencing requirements that all defendants throughout the state are subjected – even those who appear to be habitual offenders.

Why doesn’t the court get this man the help he needs. It would benefit both him and the community.

@charlotte so if you are arrested for three petty crimes it should be life in prison?

What ever happened to the Three Strikes and Your Out Law? In a case like this if he commits another assault on someone, the County should have to pay the victim’s hospital bill. One cartridge that cost about 50 cents would do wonders for these kind of bullies. He will meet someone someday that is just a little tougher and we will see his name in the obituary column where he belongs.

Put him away before he kills someone , or someone goes to jail for killing him. Seems his family knows him and knows how to deal with his antics, but if he messes the wrong person, someone who doesn’t know him , that individual could be facing a murder charge. Now that would be a shame!!!

  13. Jane on June 24th, 2015 7:24 am

Put him away seems to me nothing will be done until he kills someone how many chances the system is going to give him to do just that

Until someone sticks a camera in Bill Eddins face this will continue. This man needs to rot in a prison somewhere. He is a blight on society. I think the entire arrest, prosecution and judicial documents in this animals recent history should be acquired and published so the general public can get a taste of what the system has become. Oh and he gets a check because he’s supposed to be crazy. He should be put out of our misery.

Its baffling to me why this man is constantly being released to menace those around him. I agree that he is a time bomb! What is wrong with our legal systems? Shaking my head at the epic failure in this case. If not prison then lock him up in a mental ward.

  17. john on June 24th, 2015 6:16 am

If you don’t put him away for good, eventually he’s going to probably kill someone!

This man is a time bomb. A major tragedy waiting to happen.
