Northview Takes On Jay In Spring Game (With Photo Gallery)

May 23, 2015

In the end, the scoreboard said the Northview Chiefs topped the Jay Royals 52-31 Friday night at Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium in Bratt. The spring game started with a Northview 22-6 lead in the first half, which consisted mostly of the two team’s junior varsity or reserve players. The second half, which pitted varsity against varsity, Jay earned a 31-30 advantange.

“”We didn’t necessarily come into the game thinking we’d work it at a high tempo, but that’s what we did,” Northview Coach Sid Wheatley said following the win. He said while the Chiefs were on top, there’s still a long hot summer full of work before they are ready for the regular season in the fall.

“”We definitively have to clean some stuff up. We’ve got to get bigger, stronger, faster in the weight room and with our conditioning during summer,” he said.

If one were to read the “About” section of NorthEscambia’s website, you would see the following:

“Welcome to NorthEscambia.com, your new online newspaper serving Molino, Century, Bratt, Walnut Hill and McDavid in North Escambia County, Florida.

There are nearly 18,000 people in the northern part of Escambia County that makes up our coverage area. There are several large schools, churches, employers, and one incorporated town (Century) in what is commonly called “The North End”.

NorthEscambia.com has set out to cover the local news and events in our area. With your help, we’ll provide you with a complete look at what is happening here in our community.”

I am in the McDavid area, and I am thankful for the news and photos on this website. I also appreciate when NorthEscambia is able to report Jay events and news as I have family in that area as well. People who do not know William apparently do not realize that NorthEscambia DOES NOT have a staff of reporters and photographers. William has been very timely to report news from other schools – Tate, Jay, and West Florida HS to name a few – when people take the time to submit the information, and if possible, photos.

William, thanks for your hard work, and personal sacrifices, in reporting as much information as possible!

    >>I TOTALLY agree with the comments about Jay always being under-covered! We seldom get recognized for our sports, talent or scholastic achievements in this reporting site.

Again, this is NorthESCAMBIA.com. We do cover a few Jay things as we can, but Jay is not in our regular coverage area.

I TOTALLY agree with the comments about Jay always being under-covered! We seldom get recognized for our sports, talent or scholastic achievements in this reporting site. Some of us use this site as our only means of info and PNJ concentrates only on the bigger schools. Press gazette concentrates on Milton and Pace. We are unfortunately able to afford our own paper but none of us feel it should be so prejudicial on the coverage. For example, where was our coverage on Girls Sports and how many of our students made it to State in track? If I could give these kids the recognition they deserve I definitely would but I really thought eventually there would be less prejudicial coverage in our printed press! You made it sound like the Friday night game was a washout for the Royals when in fact our Varsity came out on top!! Can’t we try to be a little less bias and report the actual truth? These fine young athletes from Jay need to be recognized equally as other fine young athletes. We are only asking for a fair shake and I have seen with my own eyes how your photographer personally seeks out Northview cheer squad and asks them for more action shots. They stand back and only take random shots of Jay. Lets all try to be fair and supportive of the efforts of all participants PLEASE!!!

    >>North Escambia needs to remember that people of Jay read this site too seeing as to how you cover news over here at Jay. These photos seem to ignore that fact.

We do have readers in Jay. But we don’t cover Jay and Santa Rosa County as much was we do North Escambia County. We cover the “bigger” news stories sometimes from Jay, and a few community stories.

You did look through the photo gallery, I presume, because there are six Jay players pictured on this page and only two from Northview.

But before jumping to conclusions, consider why there are more Northview photos — Did Jay have a dance team at the game? No. Did Jay have two cheerleading squads? Seemed to be one (or they were up all together). Jay’s cheerleaders stood around and did almost nothing when our photographer was on their side; Northview’s performed. Did Jay have a band there? No. Did Jay’s ROTC present the colors? No. Was the Jay crowd as large at the Northview crowd? No. There were more Northview kids and people involved with the game, so, yes more Northview photos.

Acton shots are what they are…haven’t bothered to count who had more.

North Escambia needs to remember that people of Jay read this site too seeing as to how you cover news over here at Jay. These photos seem to ignore that fact. There was people from Jay there too. Lets try to be a little more even-handed with coverage.
