End Of An Era: Daniel Smillie Retires From Escambia Road Department

May 20, 2015

Daniel Smillie, Jr. was recently honored by the Escambia County Commission as he retired with 30 years of service as a field supervisor with the Escambia County Public Works Department, Roads Division.

“The impact that his persona, and he, have had on that department are really immeasurable,” said Public Works Director Wes Moreno. “He has been a mainstay of that department…I guess it is the end of an era…He’s always gotten the job done. If you wanted the job done, all you had to do was call Danny Smillie and you didn’t have to worry about it any more.”

Smillie was presented with the usual county proclamation, a golden shovel and a new fishing rod. “I’ll surely use that,” he said quipped about the new fishing rod.

“I love helping the citizens of Escambia County,” he said. “I will miss that because I met a lot of good people.”

Smillie, a former resident of Cantonment, now resides in Beulah.

I am so happy for you. You have a lot of experience in law enforcement and being a supervisor. Now the next step is County Commissioner District 5. Good Luck, we will be behind you.

Danny, congrats’ on your retirement. Don’t sit around the house and do nothing. Get out and enjoy life. It takes a little getting use to not having to go in to work, but use that time to get some things done around the house or even the neighbors house. Just stay busy. Take care and thank you for all your years of service. Mike Amerson

So happy for you danny, you deserve it. I worked for you a long time and you was always there with a smile.you stood by me through thick and thin and I will never forget you.You always had time to sit and talk with all our group even if they had problems. You always helped the people in trouble no matter what. You never forgot where you came from.I hope you and your wife have a good retirement.I knew your dad and he was just as nice as you were.never met your wife or your mom but I know they were good people. We had so many laughs on some of the dumb things that we did on that labor truck with George and john.I never knew anyone that didn’t like working for you.Never seen you get upset over anything. I love you as a friend and always will cause you were danny smillie. thank you so much for being there when I needed a friend.

Where has the time gone? Seems like yesterday, we were in High School and now you are retiring…. You are young enough to start a new job and retire again! Thanks for all you have done for our county – I remember you working on several DIRT ROADS that I have traveled (that are now paved).
