Molino Man Seriously Injured In Crash Trying To Avoid Dog

April 18, 2015

A Molino was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash in Cantonment Friday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 54-year old William Kite of Molino was northbound on Jacks Branch Road approaching Pepin Lane about 9:35 a.m. A white dog was in the center of the northbound lane, so Kite swerved to the shoulder where he struck a concrete culvert and his 2001 Chevrolet Silverado went airborne. The pickup then struck the ditch nose down and rotated end over end.

Kite was trapped in the vehicle before being extricated with the Jaw of Life and airlifted to a Sacred Heart Hospital. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Any charges in the crash are pending, according to the FHP.

@jeeperman… I’m positive that you are reading that wrong. Thanks to Debra, I followed up with animal control and spoke with the Sgt. In the north. She is Sgt. Nowlin and she said that the leash law is effective throughout the entire county, including the incorporated city of Pensacola. She said that the ordinance was reviewed by the county attorneys and it was determined that the leash law applies to the entire county, not just certain areas.

Sorry Doug but not ALL of Escambia County is covered by the leash law or technically the “direct control law”.
If you read the rest of the ordinance that you posted, you will read about a resolution that has to be voted on by the BOCC to create “direct control areas”.
The latest “direct control resolution” I could find was for West and East Kingsfield road and south thereof.
Which is less than half of the county.

I wouldn’t rely on the Humane Society for very good info and I certainly wouldn’t trust anyone at the shelter. The shelter is run by lazy people who are more interested in euthanizing animals than caring for them until they can find a new home. Most people in animal control are knowledgable, especially the female Sergeant who works in the north. I’d trust what animal control had to say over the shelter or Humane Society.

@Curious… Not your fault, but the Humane Society should update their education on Florida law and County Ordinances. I’d recommend that they contact Escambia County Animal Control; they deal directly with these law on a daily basis.

Doug, north end does not have leash law, as I was told by humane society once before. I believe 10 mile & south but not in nort.

    This accident was a tragedy.

However, as is the case, many children as well as pets are neglected and abused.

Mind you, I’m one to say this one should have been in a fenced area or on a leash,
yet the fact remains and has been reported by NE with photos to back it up…idiots neglecting their animals to the point of starvation and gross abuse and running loose.

Sorry I strayed from my thoughts about pets…children and wives have been the subject of neglect and abuse too.

This dog is someone’s pet and responsibility and has been the cause of a wreck in which a man tried to avoid hitting the animal.

Think about it, if it had been a child instead?

As far as the liability of the owner of the dog, that is covered by Florida Statute 767.01 DAMAGE BY DOGS

Owners of dogs shall be liable for any damage done by their dogs to a person or to any animal included in the definitions of “domestic animal” and “livestock” as provided by s. 585.01.

For those of you think there is no leash law in Escambia county, there is and it applies to the entire county.

The county ordinance is 10-11(a) ANIMAL CONTROL

“All animals when not on the premises of the owner or the premises of another who consents thereto shall be under the direct control of a person competent to control such animal at all times”

Direct control is defined under county ordinance 10-3 DEFINITIONS

Direct control means immediate, continuous physical control of an animal at all times such as by means of a fence, leash, cord, or chain of such strength to restrain the same. In the case of specifically trained or hunting animals which immediately respond to such commands, direct control shall also include aural and/or oral control, if the controlling person is at all times clearly and fully within unobstructed sight and hearing of the animal

    For Marcia
Escambia county’s lease law doesn’t go that far north I hate to say it but you should hit the animal. I hope the driver has a quick recovery.

I think dog owners need to control their dogs. People just let them run everywhere here. I have had to slow down many times to avoid hitting a dog or a deer. We can’t control the deer but people need to keep their dogs out of the roads. I know he didn’t want to hit the dog….no one wants to, but sometimes this is what happens when you try to avoid them. I am so sorry he was hurt and I wish him and his family well.

  13. me on April 18th, 2015 2:28 am

This is exactly why you always hit the animal. NEVER try to avoid it because this is how it will end. Your life is more important than an animals.

  14. Marcia on April 18th, 2015 12:08 am

William hope you do well, good luck for your future. I thought we have a Escambia County Lease Law.

Are you people seriously blaming this on the owners of a dog? Why are single vehicle accidents that occur in the north end always blamed on dogs or deer? How about slow DOWN on Jack’s Branch? The road improvements are great, but some folks treat this road as if it’s a new and improved Indy course. It should be an interesting summer. Welcome to life on Jack’s Branch Road.

Why would there be any charges pending. He did this because he avoiding a dog. So now he has medical bills as well as possible charges. Next time kill the dog

  17. matchbox on April 17th, 2015 10:40 pm

This is why you never swerve to avoid hitting an animal

  18. neighbor on April 17th, 2015 10:22 pm

That’s terrible someone almost lost their life bc some moron is neglecting their dog as always people put your dang dogs up I’ve accidentally ran over 2 dogs on Jacks branch an almost hit a few more as well. …..I will start calling animal control or taking care of the problem myself

  19. neighbor on April 17th, 2015 7:34 pm

I live a few houses down From where the accident took place. This white dog I see all the time. I have no clue to whom the owner of this white dog is. It runs up and down the road and in and out of my yard. I have attempted to try and catch it, but no luck. Animal control really needs to set a trap for this dog, this guy could have died! I hate the fact that someone was hurt because of this dog. prays for him and a quick recovery.

  21. Julie on April 17th, 2015 6:15 pm

The sides of the roads being flat instead of ditches would really help out in this area. I know to have to have drainage but there is nowhere to go when something happens . How about flat sides on one side especially where there are no houses on the one side. Please come up with something .

  22. Ponch on April 17th, 2015 5:19 pm

    Charges pending?

Poor guy is lucky to be alive. If you wanna charge someone, find the owner of the white dog.

Next time just take out the dog, it will be cheaper in the end.

.>>What fire unit had to respond to this wreck ???

It was in the Cantonment district, and Cantonment was first in. I did not hear all of the call, but since it involved extrication and LifeFlight, at least one other station, likely Ensley as next closest, would have been called.

  24. Robbie on April 17th, 2015 4:09 pm

Praying that God’s healing, love & peace surround, sustain and encourage you. Prayers for all of you!
