Demolition Of Old Ernest Ward Middle School Begins
March 18, 2015
Demolition began this morning on the old Ernest Ward Middle School in Walnut Hill.
Work started with the former middle school administration building, which housed science classes 20 plus years ago when the school was Ernest Ward High School.
Demolition on the remainder of the facility, including the main portion of school constructed in 1945, will be completed by the end of next week if the contractor receives the necessary permits as expected. Once the old school is demolished, the area will become mostly parking.
Students moved into their new $20 million state of the art Ernest Ward Middle School, located behind the old school, the first week of February.

There goes my Math classroom! I do like the new one much better. There is more room, a lot of storage, and the temperature is much more stabile.
I graduated from a school in 1986 and the gyms were referred to as New Gym and Old Gym…..Now when my daughter graduated in 2014 they are still referred to as the New Gym and The Old Gym…….. The New Gym was built in the 70’s I think.
I seriously doubt that they would let asbestos “fly into the air” next to a building full of children!! The asbestos was removed first!
Lot of great memories there. Sad to see the buildings being torn down, but happy for the children of today getting a new school. The buildings will be gone but the memories will last a lifetime.
Affectionately referred to as the “New Building” when I went to school there.
Did they remove the asbestos or are they letting it fly into the air
This brought tears to my eyes! So Sad, but great progress!
