Counselors Available Monday At Tate High School
March 28, 2015
Counselors will be available Monday at Tate High School, following three unrelated accidents in less than a week that claimed the lives of two 15-year old students and a substitute teacher.
Monday is Spring Break for Escambia County schools, but Tate Principal Rick Shackle said the counselors will be available from 9 a.m. and will be at the school throughout the morning for students with a need.
Tate sophomore Katelyn White was struck and killed by a train Thursday. Last Monday, 15-year Justin Taylor was killed when his pickup truck struck a utility pole. And last week, a Highway 29 wreck claimed the life of Penny Nellums, a frequent substitute teacher at Tate.

I remember when I was at Tate and we lost Wendell Black to a truck accident. I didn’t know Wendell very well, but it struck close to home for all of us. Young people, guys especially (myself included) have a tendency to feel invincible. Don’t let a tragedy strike in order to be reminded of your humanity.
I still get reminded of losing a very popular high school cheerleader friend many years ago. The entire school was in total shock! An automobile accident took her life from us and I just thought about her again as I watched the crews demolishing some of the old Ernest Ward High School buildings last week. We as parents and now even grandparents really need to pay special attention to these grieving students, even when they think they’re ok. There’s never a good time for tragedy but this is certainly a critical time of occurrence because of spring break. Some students may not have any activity plans and will not be around piers as normal and with their parents working they could be without any outside influence at all.
Even classmates, if you know someone or just happen to notice, HTU
