No Injuries In Old Chemstrand Road Crash

New Ernest Ward Opens: New Traffic Pattern For Drop Off, Pick Up

Now that students have moved into the new Ernest Ward Middle School today in Walnut Hill, there is a new traffic patternt for student drop off and pick up.

Parents will enter the campus at the Highway 99A gate at the old blue gym and take an immediate left into the school parking lot. Parents will continue through the parking lot to the drop off/pick up point at the school’s entrance. Then parents will exit the parking lot, turning left and exiting back onto Highway 99A.

Parents entering or exiting the school building (such as to check out a student) will parking the pictured parking lot and use the door marked with the red arrow.

Editor’s note: This traffic pattern for parents and buses will change once the old Ernest Ward building is demolished.

Matilda Shockley Smith

Mrs. Matilda Shockley Smith, 83, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015, in Pensacola.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Red Boiling Springs, TN and a resident of Byrneville, for most of her life. Mrs. Smith was retired from Vanity Fair after 22 years of service. She loved her six kids and wanted them all to graduate high school. She was a member of the Poplar Dell Baptist Church. The father of her children, Clyde Smith, precedes her in death.

Survivors include her three sons, Claude S. (Cheryl) Smith of Wawbeek, Clarence S. Smith of Pensacola and Clinton O. (Carrin) Smith of Tallahassee; three daughters, Claudia (Tommy) Williams of Jay, Clara (Jerry) Gulsby of Byrneville and Teresa (Frank) Lambeth of Flomaton; two brothers, Virgil Shockley of Indianapolis, IN and Daniel Shockley of Como, IN ; four sisters, Velma Bennett of Pensacola, Bonnie White of Liberty, TX, Barbara Brake of Pensacola and Joy Albright of Perry, GA; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 2, 2015, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Mitch Herring officiating.

Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Claude Sidney Smith, Jr., Matthew Covan, Benjamin Covan, Barry Morton, Josh Lambeth, Shawn Gibson and Tommy Tomlinson.

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes is in charge of all arrangements.

Sarah Ann Carter Bryars

Sarah Ann Bryars, age 79, born in Delaware County, PA and a resident of Dyas, AL died Sunday, February 1, 2015, at North Baldwin Infirmary. She was a homemaker and mother to nine children.

She is survived by her husband, Glen Bryars of Dyas, AL; five sons, Robert Gardner of Bay Minette, John (Shelby) Gardner of Excel, Arthur (Gerri) Gardner of Robertsdale, Thomas (Tiki) Gardner of Perdido, and Edward (Bess) Gardner of Rabun; three daughters, Theresa Gardner of Dyas, Roseanna (Shannon) Edwards of Malcom, AL and Katie (Charles) Jones of Robertsdale, AL; one sister, Pat Lucussie of Euse, FL; 35 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Gertrude Carter and one son, Donald Phillip Gardner.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 5, 2015, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sister Helen Stewart officiating.

Burial will follow at the White Cemetery in Dyas, AL.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 4, 2015, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Darrin Gardner, J.R. Gardner, Billy Gardner, Robbie Gardner, Thomas Sprinkle, and Phillip Gardner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Blake Coleman and Shannon Edwards.

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes is in charge of all arrangements.

Allen Charles Born, Jr.

February 2, 2015

Allen Charles Born, Jr., age 85, passed away Friday, January 30, 2015. Allen was born on October 6, 1929, in Pensacola and lived in the Ferry Pass area all his life. He retired from St. Regis Paper Company on August 1, 1985, after 37 years. He was a lifelong member of the Ferry Pass Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Allen C. Born, Sr. and Nellie Marguerite (Creighton) Born.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Louise “Momma” Born; his children, Allen III (Wanda), Karen (Chuck) Summers, James (Marie), Terry (Elizabeth), Daniel (Catherine), Stephen (Cynthia) and Cynthia (Glenn) Smith; 24 cherished grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Faith Chapel North.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Faith Chapel North. Friends are welcome one hour prior to services.

Interment will follow at Whitmire Cemetery.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Allen’s family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Covenant Hospice (both outpatient and inpatient units) for their loving care and support.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Allen’s memory to Covenant Hospice or a charity of your choice.

Dudley “Bo” Steadham

Dudley “Bo” Steadham of McDavid was born November 28, 1931, and passed away January 31, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Della Steadham; his beloved wife of 49 years, Clara Bell,; brothers, Bob and Ben; and sister, Mattie Mae Driver.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret “Monk” Kimmons; sister-in-law, Dot Steadham; his sons, Jeff, Danny (Minner) and David (Linda); grandchildren Stephanie Nelson, Jeffery (Jill) Steadham, Ian Steadham, Danielle Steadham and Casey Burkett; and two great-grandchildren, Quinton and Cooper.

He passed away peacefully in his home Saturday morning. He loved his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed farming and his cows. He lived all of his life in McDavid. He retired after 42 years as a teamster truck driver.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Nathan Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at the Ray’s Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation was Monday, February 2, 2015, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Steve McCauley, Lee Jernigan, Bubba Kimmons, Jon Godwin, Wesley Morris and Robby Barrow.

Update: Missing Alzheimer’s Patient Located

UPDATE: Missing Alzheimer’s patient located safely after a citizen tip. Earlier story:

Authorities are searching for a missing Alzheimer’s patient from Escambia County.

Joaquim Prates, 84, was last seen shortly after 2:00 Sunday afternoon at 941 Spring Creek Circle, just northeast of the Chemstrand Road, East 10 Mile Road intersection.

He is described as a dark skinned white male who is approximately 5′4″ and 140 pounds. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing blue jeans and a dark sweater and was walking a medium-large German shepherd mix dog. Anyone with any information on his whereabouts should contact the Escambia Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620.

Century Man Arrested For Negligent Manslaughter In Fatal Shooting

A Backwoods Road man has been arrested for manslaughter following a fatal shooting Saturday night in Century.

Jaran Britt Myles, 20, was booked into the Escambia County Jail Sunday morning on charges of negligent manslaughter, aggravated assault and kidnapping false imprisonment. He is being held without bond after turning himself in.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year old Jonathan Wilson was shot inside a home in the 1000 block of Backwoods Road about 8:00 Saturday night. Wilson was pronounced deceased on the scene from an apparent gunshot wound, while Myles fled the scene by forcing two additional victims at gunpoint to give him a ride, according to investigators. Myles was identified as the shooter by witnesses.

Witnesses told investigators that the shooting was the result of the reckless use of a firearm, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and investigators from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office were on scene for several hours Saturday night, working to identify the victim and figure out exactly what happened. Numerous potential witnesses were transported to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Motorcyclist Injured In Collision With Pickup On Nine Mile Road

A motorcyclist was reported to be briefly pinned under a pickup truck after a Saturday crash on Nine Mile Road. The accident occurred at the Nine Mile Road intersection with Chandler Street, just east of North Palafox. The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening, while the pickup truck driver was not injured. The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
