Nelson Seeks Federal Probe Of Dozier School For Boys

February 26, 2015

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., has asked the U.S. Justice Department to launch an investigation into the shuttered Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in the Jackson County town of Marianna.

Nelson’s request, in a letter Tuesday, cited a report by University of South Florida researchers who have found 51 bodies buried at the former school property. He said that contrasted with an earlier state investigation that concluded 31 bodies were on the site.

University researchers began exhumations after questions arose about whether boys suffered abuse and died at the school, with their bodies buried in unmarked graves.

“Given new information about wards of the shuttered reform school, and a long history of mistreatment allegations surrounding the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida, I believe the department is uniquely positioned to provide an outside and independent review,” Nelson wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder.

@Sydney, there is no statute of limitations for murder.

All articles I have read on this matter have been very incomplete. 51 bodies were found instead of 31 as recorded!!! How many of the 51 skeletons are remains of children or young men? It was suggested in previous articles that this site was also used as a regular graveyard by the general population and the nearby mental health facility. If all the remains have not yet been analyzed how many of the 31 recorded bodies were children?

For those interested…Google: The Whitehouse Boys. Several books have been written by those that were sentenced to what was at one time Florida Industrial School for Boys and later Dozier School for Boys. The stories of the abuse of these boys is heart breaking. Some were sentenced for truancy from school!
    Check out the site.

Yes, there are some folks responsible who are still alive, albeit old as heck. The State of Florida should hold a memorial for lives lost and give a public televised apology to living victims. State investigations into these allegations started arising 100 years ago not long after the “school” opened. However, allegations are always unfounded as in FDOC. The same way use of force in FDOC is justified. And the exact same way any and every possible shooting or any other wrongdoing by a deputy sheriff is always “justified” after investigation by SA office. If you go by Marianna, Fl. The towns people will adamantly deny any of the allegations were occurring And just not possible. I guess a person can make themselves believe whatever they want to believe.you

I think an investigation is a very good idea. But, what if injustices were proven, what then??

This is a very sad story. I believe there should be an investigation and as mentioned in another comment that if there are staff still living today they should be investigated as part of this operation. These poor children had to suffer at these bullies hands. May God rest their souls.

The holocaust that befell these boys should be memorialized and remembered.

I still believe that there are living staff members who could be brought to justice.

I wonder if the staff rosters and files for that period are public record?
