Molino Man Charged With Tom Thumb Robbery

February 18, 2015

A Molino man has been arrested for robbing a Tom Thumb on Saufley Field Road.

Acoya Kenneth Wright, age 19, was charged with robbery with a firearm and committing a felony with a mask or hood.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Wright robbed the Tom Thumb at 5450 Saufley Field Road at 2:36 a.m. on February 5. He was reportedly wearing all-black clothing with his face concealed by a scarf and carrying a long item wrapped in black clothing in a manner that would indicate that it was rifle. He fled the store on foot with less than $40 in cash.

Wright was developed as a suspect in the crime after relatives contacted the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office with their suspicions.

When interviewed deputies, Wright said he was very drunk and had to be carried home the night of the robbery, therefore he was not responsible for the holdup, according to an arrest report.

Friends told investigators that Wright had been looking to trade his .22 rifle for a pistol because he planned on robbing the Tom Thumb because he needed $20,000 — $5,000 of which would be for his little sister to get braces and $12,000 for his little brother, the report states.

Wright remained in the Escambia County Jail Wednesday morning with bond set at $50,000.

I don’t think this kid is tall enough for the ride called life!

That smirk on his face makes me think he knows exactly what he was doing, just an idiot for doing so.

Dear future and current criminals, these stores have very little money on hand. The safe is on a timer and there are cameras in just about every store if you see them or not. The people you are putting in danger are someone’s loved family member trying to make an honest living making barely above minimum wage. Please if you must rob or steal put some thought into it and find better targets, approx $40 cash is not worth armed robbery and a possible human life. If its for drugs, find help and make a positive difference in others lives. If you’re hungry there are plenty of churches that will give you and your family food. There are better options.

    God bless.

He’s responsible and he’s an adult…prosecute to the full extent of the law.

    “Is this kid mentally ok?”

To quote Forrest Gump: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

Obviously this guy is not the brightest penny in the roll, but he knew what he was doing and knew it was wrong, so therefore he is not legally insane. Stupid but not crazy.

I agree with hawghead. Not every bank has $20,000.A Tom Thumb? The thinking of this young man is questionable. He planned the robbery so makes me thing he knew what he was doing.

Is this kid mentally ok?…I’m being serious here…From the answers he gives it sounds like he may have some developmental issues…Just wondering..

Well, as long as he had a reason to rob the place — WHAT?????
    $5,000 for his sister’s braces + $12,000 for his little brother = $17,000
    $20,000 — $17,000 = $3,000 guess the remainder was for his troubles.

Not sure I have heard of a robber having such specific “reasons” now who will rob for his $50,000 bond?

His family did the right thing and probably saved his life as well as someone he could have seriously hurt. Armed robbers beware, citizens are now arming themselves because of your actions.

I just had to chuckle when I read that statement. His momma should explain to him that just because you do something foolish while you are under the influence of alcohol doesnt mean you wont be held accountable for your actions. Otherwise, no one would ever be found guilty of DUI, DUI Manslaughter, etc…..
