The View: School District To Purchase Corner Lot In Front Of New Ernest Ward

January 20, 2015

Huge library windows are a highlight of the Ernest Ward Middle School in Walnut Hill, and the Escambia County School Board is now set to purchase “the view” outside those windows.

The school sits at the corner of Highway 97 and Highway 99A in Walnut Hill, but the school district does not actually own the grassy lot on the corner — in front of those big windows.  The school board expected approve paying property owner Linda Faye Tolliver of Walnut Hill $15,000 for the 0.86 acre parcel.

Students are scheduled to begin classes in the new school on February 2. The school board is expected to approve the land purchase during their February meeting.

I wish I’d known about this ahead of time. It seems like an ideal location for a taco stand or a candy store.

I would not sell this property for this amount. The owner did not know this was where the school was going to be enlarged. She could have put a sandwich shop or anything that would benefit the students. She deserves more. Look what they paid for the 4-H property down in south end of county. We always whether it’s an individual or county government the NORTH end is LEFT OUT!

Seems like a lot of money for not even an acre. I have a suggestion take the 15 grand and work on the gym at the school. Last time I was in the gym it need some help.

Fair market value is what a willing buyer pays a willing seller. Appraisals go out the window….

Seems like a fair price. The County should have handled this before building the new school. They are lucky the owner didn’t hold out for more!

The property is zoned “residential”, buildable and is indeed worth the sale price.
Vacant property is way under valued by the property appraiser.

    Proud Army
If this was your property how would you like to be screwed and not be able to build on your property? They should buy her out. What can she do with the property?

Not even a full acre and they want to pay $15,000. NO, NO, NO! What a waste of our tax money. Zoning would prevent this owner to building! So why waste the funds?

Well!!! Considering the size of the lot and the building restrictions in Escambia County, the owner would probably not be able to build on the lot. But that is real cheap compared to looking for a building lot elsewhere say within an incorporated area that has a sewer system. just saying

    Linda,
They sure have done a lot of work on your property.

    David for careful construction

Not a bad deal for the seller… appraised at 5,200 by the county property appraiser’s office and sold to the taxpayers for 15,000.

    Seems a bit pricey.
