Study To Determine If A Hotel Or Motel Would Be Feasible In Century
January 27, 2015
Would it be economically feasible to open a hotel or motel in Century? Town leaders want to find out.
The town’s recently developed economic development plan from the University of West Florida’s Haas Center identified a lodging business might be need for Century to capitalize on visitors that pass through the town on a daily basis.
The Town Council voted Monday night to spend $12,500 in recently awarded state economic development grant funds to conduct a feasibility study for a lodging business. If the feasibility study determines a hotel or motel in Century would be a good idea, the town hopes to use the study to lure a lodging business to town.
For travelers on a north-south route along I-65 to Pensacola along Highway 29 through Century, the nearest hotels or motels are near I-10 in Pensacola an in Evergreen, AL.

And Brewton just announced a new hotel to be built to replace the aging Brewton Inn. Hmmm, what is different here? Brewton didn’t spend $12,500 to line somebody else’s pockets to determine if it was feasible.
Tamijane, who in century, would you get to manage it, they wouldn’t give the decent honest people anything, it would go to the ones, who want to sit back & do nothing, some can’t even take orders, prepare food or answer phones right, even if someone decent did get a job, they wouldn’t work there long because of the company it would attract, & besides that, nobody in Century doesn’t even know anything about the hotel business & nobody from that business would want to move their families here, because there is simply nothing to do. Why don’t they start bringing those to do establishments before they bring a hotel, as someone has already said, there’s not a whole lot of people around here that can afford to do much of anything. Nobody can have anything for kids, because they don’t make them mind & when someone else tries to its pure havoc, how dare you say something to my kid & there you go, that place would shut down & even quicker if it happen to include a town council relative, because then they’d expect to have extra good treatment, we’ll he/she really is a good kid, people can’t even have the right pets according to some council members, so glad I don’t live in town limits.
Don’t you think that the Hospitality Industry would have noticed that Century could support a motel? Another $12,500 down the drain. The taxpayers of Century could save a bunch of money if they just de-certified the city, and let Escambia County take over the few remaining services that they provide.
For the Pensacola scumbags commenting here…..
Clean around your own stoop before you try to judge mine.
America is what it is not just Century.
Sounds like a new city counsel needs to be appointed. Just wasted 12,500.00. Common sense tells you if drugs are rampant in the city and no reason for vistors to stop. Dont do it! All you doing is opening the flood gates for prostitusion on top of the drug problem. Gee someone must have money to blow and can only spend it a certain way. Ask yourself? Why would anyone want or need to spend the night in Century? Seems like a lot of money for just a study??? Never heard of such a thing for a small city? Is all that money really going on a study??????
I can just imagine the sorts of things that will go on there…
The Tri-City Metro area has all the necessary ingredients, and in excess for a remarkable series of events to occur at such an establishment?
sounds like yall know alot about crack
12,500.00 blown .
There is nothing in century or flomaton but lot of drug users and such and I think it would be a stupid idea to put.a motel in century or the surrouding areas I’d.go to pensacola befor I stayed in century at a motel I’m glad I moved out of florida to alabama
yes very much needed
I wish the Historical district could be a tourist draw. Turn the old Jim Walter Doors plant into a museum that tells and shows how The Alger Sullivan sawmill worked back in the day. Keep up the good work bringing Century back to life. Go Blackcats !!!

“Lazer tag? Really?”‘, Yes really lazer tag! I take my grandchildren to Pensacola to rollerskate and you’d be surprised how many kids yo wouldn’t think could afford it, yet still do! Why spend our good hard earned money on the south end of the county, when if something were in place here (in Century) we could spend our money here and help develope something.
FYI-the Happy Star didn’t make it because it wasn’t buffet. No one wants to pay those kind of prices for asian food and it isn’t a buffet.
Lazer tag? Really? Century is probably the poorest city in Florida. Who in Century can afford recreational activities? Not even Happy Star could make it!
It seems like with all of the negative attitude toward this venture you really don’t want Century to improve at all. My husband has worked at the prison for over twenty years and we have said that a motel would greatly benefit the families that come every weekend to see their loved ones. It would benefit the town as well. I believe, with the right kind of management, it could be a nice addition to our town.
FYI- there is a prison where families actually come to visit loved ones. That might be looked at also. As it was noted in the article, “the nearest hotels or motels are near I-10 in Pensacola an in Evergreen, AL”. You can add Atmore to that list also! This may be something to look at that might make the lodging idea feesible.
Some kind of entertainment place to take the kids would be a good idea. .Something that could be prevented from becoming a hangout for, “the local crack heads. Roller skating, bowling, lazer tag, something active. Just a thought!
If they will buy my lunch I will do study,NO hotel needed !!!!
Yup what Gman said
If there was money to be made in hotel business in Century one of the big hotel chains would have already done it.
I’m from Pensacola and drove around Century not long ago, and can tell you this, there is a hundred reasons why a business won’t move there.
Century, like Flomaton, is not a destination. Its a pit stop. No draw, nothing to make people stop there and spend the night. Unless said hotel rents by the four hour or half day, it may not make it.
Maybe they should do like Atmore and beg for a small Walmart. I think it could actually make it.
I’m kinda feeling like what Gman was saying, the crack heads would take over or the lazy people that work in these other places wouldn’t keep it clean enough, the only people that it would benefit is the people that are coming from/to the interstate 65 & they had better stop @ night where they wouldn’t see what kind of place they were stopping in, that’s until families catch something or some kid gets hold of a drug that some one dropped or a needle that someone left behind or a family gets mugged. The clean & upright people would never get a job there, it would be some of those that might would get a job @ BK, then you might get your stuff stolen out of room. It would bring money from the ones visiting the prison, but some of them are just as bad as some local folk, but it’s really not enough of them to justify a hotel.
People on their way to Pensacola will keep driving 40 more minutes until they get there, they are not going to stay in Century. The only decent looking businesses in Century are Whataburger and Burger King, everything else looks trashy (including the homes visible from 29). People feel like they need to hurry up and get through Century, not stop there.
Yes and also open the Welcome Center back up for travelers to be able to stop and see what Century and surrounding area has to offer.
I totally agree with Gman! Would just be a place for the crack heads, drug dealers and prostitues to lay up! THE ANSWER IS NNNOOOOOO!
Save your $12,500, the answerer is NO. All it would do is give the local crack heads a place to lay up. Until something is built in Century or the surrounding area to give travelers a reason to stop it will be a failure. If there was any money to be made a Patel family would have already opened one.
