Photos: It’s My Red Couch, And ECUA Can’t Have It

January 15, 2015

A red couch put out with the trash on Kingsfield Road attracted a little extra attention this week because of a dog that just really did not seem to want to give up his favorite spot.

Louis O’Rear, a teacher at Ransom Middle School, shared these photos, and his vision of the story:

“Tuesday, on Kingsfield, just down from Ransom Middle School toward Highwy 97 a little bit, I noticed someone had placed an old red couch on the side of the road. This morning about 7:15, someone was using it. I figure it is his, and no matter where it is, he’s going to use it. Maybe he has been sleeping on that couch for 10 years and isn’t going to stop now. In any case, seeing the look on his face, I don’t think anyone is going to be taking that couch for awhile.”

But within a short time of this story first being published on NorthEscambia.com, we learned that some picked up the little fellow. His condition led them to believe he was homeless and abandoned, and none of the neighbors had seen him before. He was taken to to the Chemstrand Oak Vet Clinic (850-474-1922) for one day, and then he’ll be headed to the animal shelter if no one claims/saves him. For more information, call the vet clinic or (850) 384-1490.

The dog is definitely a Lab or a Lab mix. I don’t see evidence of a Pit Bull either. I’ve owned or rescued Labs and Goldens, and that’s what this one looks like to me.

People are so ridiculous. Please take a second and look at this dog. He is cute, pitiful, comfortable and definitely not a pit bull. If anything he is a blonde lab or a lab mix, but not a pit bull. If your so concerned go adopt it! I would but I have 2 rescue dogs and 4 rescue cats. Pits aren’t bad dogs its the owners that train them to fight that’s bad. Cute story!!!

Not sure why everyone is talking about a pit bull. The dog in the photo sure looks like a yellow lab too me.

elissa, you are correct. The Escambia County Animal Shelter will adopt out put bull so long as they pass a temperament test. I was there last year doing a health inspection of the clinic & they tried their hardest to get me to adopt a pit bull puppy when I mentioned that I loved the breed. I would have taken one too if I didn’t have 3 dogs already.

Puddin, pit bulls used to be automatically put down if a rescue couldn’t take them a few years ago. I believe the policy changed sometime in 2012 or 2013.

Mr rReality, if the shelter did not want that information out there there wouldn’t be a meme plastered all over Facebook bragging about it.

Thats funny because when i look at dogs in the EAS there are plenty of pits.

melissa you might want to check that info you gave out. I dont think it is completely accurate based on something I experienced a few months back as it relates to a pit bull.

Melissa Brown, don’t brag about that stat too much or people will quit adopting. The info you posted is supposed to be off the record. Not on a message board for all to read!!!

Puddin, you must not be aware of the changes at the Escambia County Animal Shelter. There is no more breed-specific discrimination at that shelter. In other words, pits are not “put down” immediately. In fact, no adoptable dogs have been euthanized at the shelter over the last two months (this information came from John Robinson, shelter director.)

. If you are interested in fostering/adopting that is being taken care of through Laura Catterton and her number is 384-1490.

That’s a high quality item there Clark!!!!!

First part is adorable and super funny. Last part is so sad. :-( The animal shelter will kill him, if they havent already. The woman at the front desk told me any dog that even looks like it might be a Pitt or Pitt mix is immediately put down. Hope he finds a good home.

May he find a home with a nice couch.

  14. RACO on January 15th, 2015 8:05 am

If someone does take him he will only be put to sleep at the shelter

Hoping and praying he’s not still on his sofa in today’s weather. :( Hoping he made it to a shelter or a foster.
