Pedestrian Killed, Another Injured, In Hit And Run

January 23, 2015

One of two women struck by a vehicle on North Davis Highway Thursday night has passed away.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 35-year old Jennifer M. Tomas and 29-year old Tina Marie Frye were crossing Davis Highway north of West Florida Hospital when Tomas fell on the roadway. Frye attempted to help Tomas when Tomas was struck by an unknown make and model truck that continued southbound on Davis Highway. Frye went back in an attempt to help Tomas and was struck by a 2010 Toyota Corolla drive by 58-year old Angela Colvin Davidson. Tomas was also ran over again by the Corolla.

Both were transported by ambulance as trauma alerts to Sacred Heart Hospital where Tomas was pronounced deceased.

Anyone with information regarding the vehicle that  fled the scene, described as an older model, extended cab truck, possibly a dark in color Chevrolet, should contact Cpl. Karasek at (850) 471-6928.

Any charges are pending the outcome of a Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigation.

What ever happened with this case? Did they ever catch the guy driving the truck?

Jason is right about one thing, this is a dark stretch of highway. I come down this stretch every weekday morning @ 4.30 am. However, there is no such thing as a safe pedestrian crossing in Pensacola……even in broad daylight! Unless you are in tip top physical condition, do not attempt to cross any street in Pensacola as a pedestrian. Between the red light runners, speeders, texting while speeding AND running red light drivers, you don,t have a prayer.
On somewhat of a positive note in this story, tragic as it is, Ms Frye gave her life trying to help and save a friend. I hope she is buried with honor and dignity.

The lady that died in this hit and run was developmentally delayed,, as well as her friend, it appears from the pictures that it happened across from the Dollar General and they were walking back to their apartment where they lived. Jennifer had CP which may have triggered her to fall.

@CJones and sniper Doesn’t Florida EMS call TCC for trauma alerts? In Alabama we do and the tell us and patch us through to the receiving hospital so we don’t have to repeat our report numerous times. TCC, for us in Alabama, makes the call as to where our patients go and it would never be to a hospital that isn’t a trauma center?

Chances are, most people that travel Davis around there frequent it. Keep a look out for cars around you when on Davis. O see a lot of the same cars on Davis, I can yell my specific number stickers, etc.

@ ER Nurse (and others) – thank you for your explanations. I think I’m as surprised as many others to learn of what I consider a huge difference in ER facilities. One would think every ER should be a trauma center, but now we know that’s not the case. Sadly amazing.

  9. ER Nurse on January 23rd, 2015 9:47 am

West Florida does not provide trauma services, only Sacred and Baptist. Trauma alerts bypass non-trauma centers. The exception is if patient is/becomes trauma code (loses vital signs) in which case they are generally transported to the nearest hospital in attempt to stabilize the patient in an ER. If the patient can be resuscitated (which is very rare following traumatic code) they are transferred immediately to nearest trauma center for more comprehensive and specialized surgical care.

Each patient has a choice of which hospital they want to go to. EMS cannot decide unless the patient cannot. If they are trauma alerted then EMS makes the call. william you are correct. Sacred is preferred because of its trauma center. sme goes with pediatric incidents.

The way we choose which hospital can depend on numerous factors such as the patients insurance provider or the severity of the patient. In Escambia County, Sacred Heart Hospital is our lead hospital for patients with severe cases, because its has all centers needed to treat victims. In all cases, a patient must be transported to a hospital with appropriate treatment for their injury. Some hospitals are specialty centers – some have resources such as a trauma center, labor and delivery ward, stroke center, burn ward, or pediatric ER. If a patient needs these resources, the patient will be transported to the nearest hospital that has them. In the case of a vehicle accident, if significant trauma is suspected the ambulance will transport the patient to the nearest trauma center unless the patient’s airway, breathing or circulation are unstable, in which case the ambulance will go to the nearest hospital first to treat this, then move on to the appropriate specialty center.

    >>If they were hit by West Florida hospital, why did they take them to Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s trauma center can provide an advanced level of care that WF cannot, I believe.

If they were hit by West Florida hospital, why did they take them to Sacred Heart?

???? Wouldn’t WF hospital been closer? How does choosing a hospital work in an emergency? Sacred Heart doesn’t make sense to me in this case.

I came upon this accident last night. It made sad and sick. The person that hit them kept on going. There was also a child involved. Prayers for this family.

Another dark stretch of road and no pedestrian crossing. Why chance running across the street in front of approaching traffic? Prayers for all involved.
