Escambia Man Set To Be Executed Thursday For 1993 Murder

January 14, 2015

An Escambia County man is set to be executed Thursday for first-degree murder and sexual battery during a home-invasion robbery in 1993 in Escambia County.

Johnny Shane Kormondy, 42, to set to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday. The execution will be the 21st since Gov. Rick Scott took office in January 2011, equaling the number overseen by former Gov. Jeb Bush, which is the most for any Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

Kormondy was found guilty in 1994 in the death of Gary McAdams, a local banker who was shot in the back of the head during a home-invasion robber in the Thousand Oaks subdivision off Chemstrand Road. McAdams and his wife, who was repeatedly raped during the attack, had returned home from a Woodham High School school reunion when confronted at the front door by Kormondy and his two accomplices.

Kormondy was the leader of the attack, recruiting the accomplices, providing transportation and casing the McAdams’ neighborhood. Kormondy’s accomplices, Curtis Buffkin and James Hazen, received life sentences. Law enforcement was able to close the case when a person to whom Kormondy confessed went to police seeking a $50,000 reward for information. Kormondy also threatened to kill witnesses who testified at his trial, including Mrs. McAdams, if he were ever released.

The robbers reportedly left the house with $20.

The News Service of Florida contributed to this report.

Yes. These punks were driving around the thousand oaks neighborhood looking to commit burglary and just happened to see the Mcadams coming home. Im sure Mrs. Mcadams has gone through that scenario a million time. “If we hadn’t stopped for that gallon of milk, etc…” They have essentially continue to torture this woman simply by existing.
Theres a bunch of things the system “should” do, one being harvesting these peoples organs for good folks who need em.
I know they appeals process is so innocent people have a chance but if i could carry out justice swiftly, i would. If one or two were innocent, sorry. Gotta break a few eggs to make an omlet right ?

I have zero compassion for this man, I pray that the surviving victim finds peace when this garbage is executed, it’s just to bad Curtis Buffkin and the Hazen fella aren’t joining him. I say bring back the noose, it’s cheap and efficient.

I lived nearby and this was shocking and heart breaking what happen to the McAdam’s. I never felt safe again. Did they find out why Kormandy and the other guys chose the McAdam’s house. I agree with chris in Molino.

About time he got his punishment. 21 years past due and a lot of taxpayers money wasted.

Half of the comments here say it took too long. This atrocity happened right after I moved here from another state. I remember how gruesome and horrible I thought it was at the time. At that time, I had one toddler/kindergartner, he is now 27 and I’ve got one 18 and another 13…. My point is that this puke ended a life and ruined another in one day. He’s been allowed to eat, drink, and live for all these years. He’s getting his soon, but this family should have had total justice within 8 years…. Not over 20.

20 years overdue. The taxpayers of Florida are the real victims here, having to foot the bill for someone that committed such a horrible crime. Buh bye, and good riddance.

I agree with Chris in Molino.
Capitol punishment should be dealt out in the town square at high noon on Saturdays. What do we get when we hide punishment behind block walls?
    More criminals.
I hope the executioner botches the procedure and that Kormandy lingers for hours in pure agony while screaming to be put down.
Rot in hell you worthless oxygen waster.

I’m sorry for the families involved in this guys crime and the prisoners family for having to lose their son in the worst way possible, but good riddance. What that guy did was despicable

I certainly believe in capital punishment and executing people who commit murder and other harsh crimes; however, I would really like our legal system not waits over 20 years to execute someone. What purpose is served all this many years later. I would like to see the appeal process only take one year.

I’m glad to see this family finally get the justice they deserve.

I wish that the due process didn’t take so long, families have to wait and suffer the horrible memories much too long.

My family is going through the same thing, family member murdered by someone who broke in to rob him. After they shot and killed him they then set the house a blaze.

I hate to think we have to endure 20 years of the horrible memories before the man who did this crime gets his reward (hopefully he will get death).

His method of execution should not be a painless lethal injection. Because he used a gun to kill and wanted to kill, his method of execution should be a firing squad aimed at his head, as he shot Mr. McAdams. As gruesome as that is, the fear of the execution method hopefully would reduce the willingness of the criminals to murder. I read long ago that Buffkin’s father and grandfather had both been in prison. Here’s a controversial comment for you: Why do we let these people reproduce? Something to wonder about.

He’s got an online petition to stay his execution. Please, are you kidding ? I don’t care if he pulled the trigger or not. One of the defense’s is that after his conviction for being the trigger man, a codefendent (who had already gotten life) said Kormondy wasn’t the trigger man so Kormondy should get life also. Nice try. No the codefendents should be grateful they’re not getting justice also.
Cecilia is extraordinary for not letting this demonic act define the rest of her life.
Sorry Kormondy, try you will but die you must. All 3 should’ve been beaten, arms, legs, and fingers broken. Castrated and hung by the ankles on display outside the courthouse for a whole day as a planned media reported event. That my friend, would be a deterrent to future Kormondys.

Gary was a Co-Worker and a very good friend of mine who did not deserve what they did to him and Cecilia and glad to see at least one of the perpetrators FINALLY getting what he so rightfully deserves. Just wish Buffkin and Hazen were going in behind him since they are just as guilty and deserve the same sentence / result. GOOD BYE YOU PIECE OF CRAP … Hope you burn in HELL and hope you enjoy your eternity in the eternal flame. I went to school with some of Buffkins brothers and sisters and they all were pieces of crap and always in trouble as teenagers and up through Adult life as well. A few of them are dead now BUT they were all nothing but TROUBLE back in the day.

  16. haley on January 14th, 2015 7:23 am

Yes, it is long overdue. What he and the other two put that couple through that night was just terrifying. Then to kill Gary…..Just terrible. May God have mercy on his soul.

  17. mick on January 14th, 2015 6:44 am

    The real punishment awaits you…

  18. john on January 14th, 2015 6:43 am

As bad as these men think they are, they are fixing to meet someone a whole lot badder so bad in fact that it cannot be measured. When they a begging for mercy, like their victims, they will not find it, at the white throne judgement all they will hear “depart from me I never knew you, you worker of inequity”. Then Gods Holy angels take him away.

    Burn!

  20. Sam on January 14th, 2015 5:48 am

Took entirely too long to put this one down. Tax payers paid for his lawyers, housing, food, medical, etc. a waste of Gods good air.

  21. charlie on January 14th, 2015 4:56 am

Why did it take twenty two (22) years to carry out his sentence? We, the tax payers, have supported this thing and deserve to know why.

  22. Shelia on January 14th, 2015 3:17 am

He should have been executed YEARS ago. The money the State spent, taking care of him, clothing him, feeding him, providing Medical, Dental etc. could have gone to the victim. Good Riddance!!! May God have mercy on his soul.

  23. jimmyg on January 14th, 2015 2:12 am

    Burn Johnny Burn, in hell!!!
