Escambia Man Executed For 1993 Murder

January 16, 2015

Following a two hour delay for a failed U.S. Supreme Court appeal, an Escambia  County man was executed Thursday night for first-degree murder and sexual battery during a home-invasion robbery in 1993 in Escambia County.

Johnny Shane Kormondy, 42, was pronounced deceased at the Florida State Prison at 7:16 p.m. (CST), shortly after the first lethal injection was given.. As he uttered his final words, Kormondy expressed no remorse and offered no apology for his crime. He thanked his family members and spiritual advisor. His last words were, “I pray to Jesus Christ, son of God, I’m coming home”.

Kormondy was found guilty in 1994 in the death of Gary McAdams, a local banker who was shot in the back of the head during a home-invasion robber in the Thousand Oaks subdivision off Chemstrand Road. McAdams and his wife, who was repeatedly raped during the attack, had returned home from a Woodham High School school reunion when confronted at the front door by Kormondy and his two accomplices.

Kormondy was the leader of the attack, recruiting the accomplices, providing transportation and casing the McAdams’ neighborhood. Kormondy’s accomplices, Curtis Buffkin and James Hazen, received life sentences. Law enforcement was able to close the case when a person to whom Kormondy confessed went to police seeking a $50,000 reward for information. Kormondy also threatened to kill witnesses who testified at his trial, including Mrs. McAdams, if he were ever released.

The robbers reportedly left the house with $20.

The execution was the 21st since Gov. Rick Scott took office in January 2011, equaling the number overseen by former Gov. Jeb Bush, which is the most for any Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

PROBLEM: “Kormondy also threatened to kill witnesses who testified at his trial, including Mrs. McAdams, if he were ever released.”

SOLUTION: [Kormondy] was executed Thursday night for first-degree murder and sexual battery during a home-invasion robbery.

I can’t even begin to fathom how Ms. McAdams has felt throughout this hellish ordeal, but I hope she feels a little safer now. I pray she can move on in peace.

    REGARDING:
“I believe, is indicative of how our permissive society is producing more self-centered people who have no regard for others.”

This is possible, but there has never been a shortage of “self-centered people who have no regard for others.”

The problem lies in their assumption they will never be caught, charged, tried, convicted and punished.
Any weakness in the chain of events means they get away with murder.

They often forget jail time is punishment even if they die of old age ere execution.

Randomly executing a convicted killer each month or even each year would scare the ones thinking they will win the lottery each time they play.

    David for disuading would-be killers

The picture that has been shown of Shane has always been the same one that was taken 20 plus years ago. I wonder how 20 years on death row aged him?

there are 393 on death row dating back to 1975. here is the roster addresshttp://www.dc.state.fl.us/activeinmates/deathrowroster.asp

And how many more are left on death row. Let’s start at the top and go down the list to the last one put on it. Then maybe that list will stop growing at a fast rate.

A lethal injection is too humane. People that commit a capital crime and are sentenced to death should suffer, not just allowed jut allowed to slip away.

They should be know in taking these last steps that the only way out of the physical torment, is an eternity of spiritual torment.

    Karmondy was Rick Scott-a-cuted.

Well, Leonard Gonzalez, Jr., you move one up in line.

Fight it al you want,I hear the sheets being changed on the gurney.

To bad his two co-defendants didn’t join him for this final ride. They deserved the same as Kormondy.

I pray for this family to have some peace now. I went to Oakcrest Ele. and Brownville Middle with Terri.. We were best friends always together, their mother was our Sunday School teacher at Oakcrest Baptist. I can remember we use to get on Gary’s nerves but I thought he was so cool, tall & cute. REST IN PEACE GARY!

Like 429SCJ states above, hopefully this will give a measure of closure. Not sure that is possible either. This was such a horrific crime. The way they went in and terrorized Cecilia and then killed her husband. What a terrible tragedy. Its in God’s hands what will happen to Kormondy’s soul. I just hope Cecilia can move on with her life and a good way. She will never forget but hopefully she will forgive. This guy was a monster and so are his sidekicks which I think are getting off easy. I wish the best for Ceciia…..

The increase in the number of executions doesn’t necessarily reflect on the Governors desire to implement capital punishment but, I believe, is indicative of how our permissive society is producing more self-centered people who have no regard for others.

    …and the story ends.

    And that’s a good thing…

    Good riddance

Hell is your new home Kormondy, enjoy.

Finally after 22 years, the powers that be has done what should have be done 20 years ago. Why does it take so long to carry out a sentence?

I went to school with a shane kormondy. The guy I remember was a huge bully. He stole stuff from my locker and would always try to pick fights.

Just can’t recall what he looked like that far back, but this pic above seems eerily familiar.

I remember this murder. He got what he deserved.

Hopefully this will give a measure of closure, if such a thing is possible.
