What’s That Smell? DEP Wants Escambia, Santa Rosa Residents To Report Odors

December 16, 2014

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Northwest District is launching an online reporting tool to gather data regarding ongoing odor complaints received from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The department has been investigating odor complaints since Wednesday, Dec. 10. Information currently available to the department has been inconclusive in establishing the source of the odor.

The department is requesting that residents in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties experiencing any unusually strong odors report them here.

The information provided through this online reporting tool will assist the department with identifying the source of the odor.

Slight fish smell- noticed this morning but could have been earlier in week. Not as strong as in December when it also burned your eyes. Location is north of 98 just past the National Seashore. What is causing this? Is it detrimental to our health?

I’m sure the idea is to plot the points and place an overlay of the winds on a map. This would reduce the erroneous wind directions that would most likely be reported.

On Sunday, Dec 14, my husband and I noticed a strong odor that we couldn’t identify. We couldn’t find the source of the smell either. It was kind of a metallic-smoky smell that was scary. Seemed to be coming from the north/ We live on the west end of Perdido Key and it was mid-afternoon when we noticed it. Not sure how long it had been there but we noticed the smell for about 30 minutes. It was gone as quickly as we found it.

    >>>LOL, they do not even ask “what direction is the wind coming from” on that linked form!

They do ask for location, date and time. They would know which direction the wind was blowing from that info. :)

We live in Bayside subdivision and smelled strong fishy odor all of this past weekend. Could this possibly be from Air Products? My husband said he has smelled this same odor occasionally over the past several years.
