Tate Blows Away Fort Walton Beach 56-20 (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate High Aggies blew past the Fort Walton Beach Vikings Friday night, 56-20.

Tate quarterback Sawyer Smith recorded 273 yards, including three touchdown passes. Reggie Payne caught nine passes for 100 yards plus a 46-yard touchdown pass. Smith also found Darren Lee and Bradley Trombly for second half  TDS’s.

Smith put the Aggies on the board with a one yard dive, plus Corey Moorer scored with a 25-yard run to give Tate a 14-0 lead in the fist quarter.

The Aggies (7-2, 1-1) will sit out next week before hosting the Escambia Gators for Tate Senior Night on November 7.

Great For The Kids: Free Open House At Turtle Point

There will be an open house today at the Turtle Point Science Center in Flomaton.

Admission is free and open to the public from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Food will be available from the Flomaton High School Band Boosters. There will be live music from “Two Stories Collide”, a live cake auction at 4:30, and a spooky trail.

The 3,000 square foot Turtle Point offers a touch tank for children and other hands-on exhibits. It boasts an extensive collection of wildlife specimens including many Alabama birds, nests, and eggs; a butterfly and living bee exhibit; live alligators, turtles, snakes, amphibians, and fish of the East Gulf Coastal Plain geophysical region. Also, plant lovers will find six teaching gardens and a wetland nature trail.

Turtle Point’s goal is to provide hands-on environmental education to students and adults in the South Alabama and Northwest Florida area. Turtle Point is located at 20959 Highway 31 in Flomaton, near Hurricane Park and Flomaton High School. For more information, call (251) 296-3401.

Northwest Escambia Senior Chiefs In Playoffs Tonight Against Jay

The Northwest Escambia Senior Chiefs football team will face the Jay Royals in the playoffs tonight at 7:15 at  W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton, AL. The Chiefs are Western Division Champs in the Escambia River Conference.

With a win Saturday night, the Senior Chiefs would play for the Escambia River Conference Championship at Tommy Weaver Memorial  Stadium at Northview High School on November 1.

Elmer C. Neal

October 25, 2014

Elmer C. Neal passed away October 21, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mattie Lee Neal; and brother, Bill Neal.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Ruth; their son, Jason; grandson, Michael; and brother, Edgar. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.

Elmer was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather as well as friend. He was a member of Cottage Hill UMC. Elmer proudly served his country in the US Army. He was well loved and respected by all who knew him. Elmer also loved and enjoyed his work family. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening and dirt track racing. He took great pride in his family and home. Elmer cut and milled the timber that was used in building his home. Elmer was a great problem solver no matter the issue. If anyone had a problem with a car, electrical, woodworking or anything else they turned to Elmer and he would find a solution.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Rev. Jimmy Cook officiating.

Burial will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery.

Faith Chapel Funeral Home North is in charge of arrangements.

Possible Live Military Explosive Found At Business Near Ensley Walmart

October 24, 2014

A possible live military ordnance was discovered at a business on Hood Drive  Friday afternoon. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office responded and a military explosive ordinance disposal team was called to dispose of the item. The item was removed and taken to the Sheriff’s Office shooting range to be destroyed.

There’s no word yet on exactly what the device was.

The area  was evacuated. leading to traffic delays in the area of Hood Drive and North Palafox (near the Ensley Walmart).

Escambia Elementary, Middle School Report Cards Today; High School Delayed Until Monday

Elementary and middle school reports cards in the Escambia County School District will be sent home with students as planned today; however, the distribution of high school report cards has been delayed until Monday.

“All student report cards, including high school, can be viewed on the Focus Gradebook Parent Portal after 5:00 p.m. today.  Any questions parents may have about specific grades should be directed to their student’s teachers. Any parents who have not registered for the Focus Gradebook Parent Portal, may do so on the district website by selecting the ‘Families’ link,” Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said.

Alabama Kicks Off Statewide ‘Food Day’ In Atmore; Florida Celebrating Today Too (With Video)

Today is “Food Day”and officials in Florida and Alabama are encouraging residents and visitors to make positive changes toward healthy eating and active living. Food Day events are being held statewide in both states, championed by local county health departments and community partners, to support residents in attaining and maintaining a healthy weight.

Alabama kicked off statewide Food Day events Friday morning at the Atmore Farmer’s Market with a state proclamation from Gov. Robert Bentley and Atmore Mayor Jim Staff. Events followed across Alabama.

Food Day events were also planned across Florida.

“Food Day reminds us all to make healthy choices in what we eat,” said Florida State Surgeon General and Florida Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “By choosing nutritious foods and beverages, every Floridian can achieve a healthy weight that lowers the risk of future diabetes and heart disease.”

Food Day was created by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and is held annually on October 24. The observance is a national celebration of healthy, affordable and sustainably produced food that promotes healthier diets and food education.
