Gulf Power Customers Face January Increase

October 23, 2014

Gulf Power customers will see an increase on their bill next year. The Florida Public Service Commission allows expenses such as power plant fuel to be passed along to consumers, but they are not allowed to earn a profit on fuel charges.

A Gulf Power residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours a month will pay $139.29, upĀ  from $132, according to the PSC.

Fuel costs are a major component of each customer’s monthly bill. The industry commonly uses 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity for residential customers as a benchmark, though many customers use more power than that each month.

Customers of two other major Florida utilities – Florida Power & Light and Tampa Electric – will see very minor decreases on their bills.

OK…EVERYONE who thinks this rate increase is unfair email and write the Florida Public Service Commission! Let them know how you feel! Demand a second option for buying electricity in Escambia County! Enough of this monopoly that decides whether or not we can afford to buy food!

Right on c.w., SS claims we only get a 1.7% increase because fuel prices have gone down! That hogwash cuz look at the power increase, the cost of fresh produce and meat. We can’t even afford to buy those anymore! God help us!!

Don’t blame Gulf Power for the increase(s).
Blame the people that are suppose to look out for the consumer.
i.e. The Florida Public Service Commission
For either not vetting GP’s reasons for the needed increases.
Or for taking bribes and payoffs to approve the increases.

They just raised the rates earlier this year…now they are doing it again???!!! Where is the increase for people on SSI? This just took that away with their rate increase! I think it is time for some competition in Escambia County for electric customers!

This reminds me of when the price of oil goes down and the price of gas goes up. This is what monopolies do, manipulate higher costs without justification.

How is it the other companies are DECREASING rates? GP already uses natural gas but they already owned the coal companies they buy coal from at inflated rates…Too deep into coal to switch to gas…This is unreal!!!

I am offended in the year 2014 that we don’t have more options on who to pay for electricity. It seems like a cruel monopoly to me. If the price really is necessary, then I wouldn’t complain, yet I feel like we are forced into being limited. This is definitely not the future I was promised when I was born in the 1970’s. I thought warfare and all that was supposed to bring us freedom.

Why does Gulf Power need a rate increase for coal when
the price of coal is at the lowest level since the great
    depression ???
    Something smell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Energy prices will continue to climb because cheap fuels that produce it like coal are under fire by the current administration.

Electric is another thing the government does not figure into inflation. The seniors get a1.7% increase and gulf power alone get most of it.
