Girlfriend’s Facebook Selfie Helps Land Cantonment Burglar Behind Bars

September 19, 2014

A Flomaton man has been busted in connection with a Cantonment burglary after his girlfriend posted a “selfie” Facebook photo showing stolen goods in the background, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Colby Wayne Satterwhite, 22, was charged with armed burglary of a residence, grand theft and criminal mischief.

Residents of a home in the 300 block of Jacks Branch Road reported that their home had been burglarized sometime during a two day period in which they were gone. They returned home to find a exterior door pushed open, and missing items including $200 in cash, a large collection of collectable coins, a camera, a Mossberg shotgun in a tan case and ammunition. The total estimated value of missing items was $15,060.

Acting on a tip, the burglary victim checked the Facebook page of Satterwhite’s girlfriend and spotted what she believed to be her shotgun case in the background of one of the girlfriend’s “selfie” photographs.

There’s no word from the Sheriff’s Office if the stolen items were recovered.

Not sure which one is more ignorant, what was actually done in the article or the comment made by “me”. I agree with everyone else, if you don’t do wrong, there’s nothing to see! I sure would hate to be “nailed” for my happy birthday postings!

Talking about invading someones privacy… Don’t you think someone stealing your property is an invasion of privacy.

@Me—The only way for you to be totally safe is to be sure you have on your aluminum hat at all times. That way the government can’t read your mind.

    Hey “me,”

    Can you read?

The photo was viewed by the burglary victim and passed on to police. If you are worried about going to jail based on what’s on your facebook page, my advice would be to stop doing illegal stuff and posting it there.

It’s not an invasion of privacy. if you put something on the internet for the world to see, don’t complain when someone looks at it.

@me The government did not look at the girlfriends FB page, as stated in the article the victim did! And if you don’t want unknown people looking at your stuff then don’t post it or change the dang privacy settings.

Hope they get all their stolen items back!!

    @me

How is this invading anyone’s privacy? She was stupid enough to post a photo for the public to see. All she had to do was change her privacy settings. Yet another candidate for dumb criminals.

A criminal was caught because of social media and that is a bad thing? I understand the invasion of privacy but if you’ve got nothing to hide and are careful of what you post, it isn’t a big issue. Some people put EVERYTHING on Facebook and more. Social media and cellphones have helped in so many ways in righting wrongs. It’s not always a good thing but being careful about what is posted is common sense. It is surprising how many crimes have been solved as a result of capturing info with social media and phones.

Why delete your Facebook page if you have nothing to hide. Only the idiots that take pictures with stolen property or drugs, etc… Should have to delete their fb accounts. If you’re doing nothing wrong then who cares who sees it. Government, police, etc…

WHAT A WAY TO GO DOWN. WAS SHE NOT AWARE OF THE ITEMS IN THE BACKGROUND. DID SHE HAVE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE THESE ITEMS DIDN’T BELONG TO HER BOY FRIEND OR HAD NO IDEA. HE MIGHT NOT BE IN THE RUNNING FOR DUMBEST CRIMINALS BUT REAL CLOSE IF I HAD A VOTE ON IT. I’M GLAD THE VICTIM LOOKED ON FACEBOOK TO SEE WHAT SHE HAD BEEN INFORMED ABOUT AND THE CULPRIT WAS IN TURN CAUGHT. I HOPE SHE CAN RECOVER HER STUFF AND GET THIS IDIOT SOME TIME IN JAIL OR PRISON AND BE MADE TO PAY RESTITUTION FOR WHAT HE ALREADY CONSUMED OR GOT RID OF. MOST THIEVES DONT STEAL BECAUSE THEY WANT TO KEEP THE ITEMS OR USE THEM BUT RATHER TO SELL AND GET WHAT THEY WANT–LIKE DOPE. THIS DUMMY REALLY NEEDS SOME TIME IN THE BIG HOUSE SO HE CAN STRAIGHTEN UP.

That’s why you should all cancel your facebook accounts. The government, law enforcement etc. is invading your privacy when it comes to facebook and can pretty much nail you for anything through your facebook. I deleted my account over a year ago.
