Woman Shot, Killed Inside Pensacola Business

July 16, 2014

A motive remains under investigation for a domestic violence related shooting that claimed the life of a Pensacola woman Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the suspect – Dearin Jameel Leggs, 28, of 1607 Gary Avenue, Pensacola – turned  himself in at the Escambia County Jail less than an hour after the shooting. He has been charged
with first degree murder and is being held without bond.

The victim has been identified as Angela M. Covington, 37, of the same address.  Leggs and Covington were boyfriend and girlfriend, according to Pensacola Police Department Sgt. Kevin Christman.

The shooting occurred just before noon inside Ann Marie’s All That and More, 2405 West Cervantes St., a clothing store owned by Covington.  Christman said Leggs shot Covington inside the business and then left the area in a vehicle.

A woman who was inside the business at the time of the shooting ran to a business next  door and reported the incident.

I did not know Angela, I was friends with her son’s grandmother but she talked to me about her. she loved her a lot, she told me that she was a wonderful person. I felt like I knew her. I am in prayer for the family. I pray that GOD will be with you all though this trying time. she may be taken from her son, she may be taken from her parents, she may be taken from her friends but no one can take her from GOD. Shine on baby girl, shine on. peace and love to all who loved her.

My love and prayer of truth goes out to the young lady, family of the deceased and her work family. Im so sorry for the great loss. I knew her not but from reading whats been written about her, she loved and is loved. I was excited to know a new business had been birthed in the area…we were ready to support her business and was deeply hurt when we witnessed this shock. Im proud of her and richly honored to know she was and will still carry her title of a Virtuous Woman. Who can find a Virtuous Woman? We did. Ms. Covington you are a Virtuous Woman. GOD Bless.

I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Covington for about a year. We were Correctional officers together and I was honored to say she was a friend. Thoughts and prayers to her son, mother and family. She will be missed by her Blackwater Correctional family.

It’s sad that some loved person was executed by any method. But it did happen with a gun. We can’t blame the gun any more than we can blame a car for someone getting a DUI or being hurt by an impaired driver.

She was a wonderful person and friend. She was a corrections officer and worked at Blackwater Correctional. Prayers for her family.

@Walnut Hill Roy- Please cite your source for this claim: “I can’t let the murder by guns comment pass without commenting that many times that number of murders are stopped by people with guns.”

I’ll be waiting, because there is zero data to support your claim.

And Lifendason, you are correct that the man apparently killed this woman–but if he had not had a gun, someone probably could have stopped him before he killed her with a spoon.

It is so sad when you hear the statement ‘Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.’ This is true, but a gun will stay put FOREVER, and never fire on its own, if someone didn’t pick it up and pull the trigger. When will we learn? After we destroy all mankind! Get real.

    Guns don’t kill people.
Blood loss due to holes created by bullets fired from guns by people kills people.
    (Or organ damage or whatever.)

Guns are good for making those holes. Other tools will also work but only with greater effort and usually in closer proximity.

Ladies, please be careful when you choose mates, even temporary mates.

Gentlemen, your reasons for wanting to kill people are seldom worth the personal expense in time, property and freedom you will incur. Please reconsider.

    David for better people
    better choices
    better outcomes

if bows and arrows were easily concealed, they would probably be the weapon of choice. Silent, so attracting attention would not alert anyone to report the crime. Dead is dead. As Lifendason has said, “it was the man behind the gun that did it.”

  12. Jeremy Wells on July 17th, 2014 9:06 am

She was also a Corrections Officer. She was a very kind, sweet, and hard worker. I was blessed with getting to know her and work with her. She has been working at Blackwater full time along with working at her clothing store. We will be prayong for you and your family Ms. Covington.

  13. Lifendason on July 17th, 2014 8:02 am

Guns, knives, spoons, forks, etc., it wasn’t the tool that killed this lady, it was the man behind that gun that did. Basically he wanted her dead and the gun was there to be a means to an end.

  14. Walnut Hill Roy on July 17th, 2014 7:56 am

I can’t let the murder by guns comment pass without commenting that many times that number of murders are stopped by people with guns. The statistics are for people shooting other people in a defensive situation, there are no statistics on how many “perps” run when they realize that the “mark” has their own firearm.

So sad. Whether it is guns, knives, etc., as Lawson says it is sad that ppl are killed by any means. My prayers go out to Ms. Covington’s family.

  16. Jeff on July 17th, 2014 7:22 am

I agree that murder by any means is sad, but since a steady 68% of US murders are by firearm (FBI data, 2007-2011), I think Sheila’s point is well-taken.

  17. Lawson on July 17th, 2014 5:29 am

I think it is sad that people are killed by any means.

Hate this for the young ladies family. At least the guy turned himself in. This just proves domestic injunctions are worth the paper they are printed on.

  19. Sheila Pace on July 16th, 2014 5:05 pm

I think it is so sad too many deaths happen by guns, it is as people have lost all respect for the human life and the 10 commandments it’s. heartbreaking
