Arrest Made In Murder Of Football Standout

June 15, 2014

An arrest was made late Saturday night in an Escambia County homicide.

Shaquille Purifoy, 20, was shot in the head about 7:30 Friday night in the 8400 block of Country Walk Drive. He was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital where he passed away on Saturday.

Saturday night, investigators arrested 39-year old Xavier Tyrone Moore for the shooting. He was charged with felony murder, negligent manslaughter and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His initial bond was set at $250,000.

The shooting appears to have been drug related, Detective Heath Jackson, spokesman for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, said early Sunday morning.

Purifoy was on the basketball and football teams at Pine Forest High School and went on to play football for Grambling State University.

Either way this man needs to never see the light of day again. If he would kill over something so trivial he will probably do it again.

This was a AWESOME,HUMBLE FOCUSED YOUNG MAN. THIS WAS A ROBBERY. HE WAS NOT AWARE THIS WAS WHY THEY WERE THERE. “IT’S DRUG RELATED” HAS BECOME A BLANKET STATEMENT FOR VIOLENCE ON BLACKS” IT’S A SCARLET LETTER MODERN DAY. MOST OF YOU ALL POSTING NEGATIVE REMARKS SMOKE-DRINK & SHOOT. IS MARIJUNA WORTH A LIFE? THIS WAS A ATHLETE THAT NEVER FAILED A DRUG TEST & HAD NONE IN HIS SYSTEM. IF YOU WENT WITH SOMEONE SOMEWHERE UNKNOWINGLY TO PURCHASE DRUGS & BACK AWAY WHEN HE REALIZED WHAT WAS UP. HE WANTS TO LEAVE BUT GOT SHOT & ROBBED…ON HIS BEHALF EVEN TRYING TO DO RIGHT CAN COST YOU EVERYTHING

Drug related doesn’t necessarily mean it was a drug deal gone bad. The victim or shooter could have had drugs on them. Every story has three sides and I’m sad that the victim cant tell his. Please remember this young man wasn’t only an athlete. He was a good son, brother, friend and so much more. RIP Shaq. Fly high!

  11. Danny on June 15th, 2014 1:53 pm

That was my cosin he was a good kid an it was not drugs it was robbery he didnt deserve that just cause he black its got to be drug

I am a professional woman who was raised in the same community as this young innocent childs family….I have never used drugs nor sold them. I have never participated in illegal activities and I have seen it all my life so in response to the comments being made…just because you are born and raised in or around certain environments does not make you a product of your environment! Shaq was a well mannered child who was humble and to a role model to other young children….was never in trouble…always respectful…so for those of you who have your opinions and accusations remember they are yours and you are entitled however this yound man does not deserve to have his image tarnished in his demise!!!!

True, not all black on black killings are drug related, neither are all white on white, white on brown, green, or whatever. But I am willing to bet that 95% of senseless killings are somehow related to drugs. The addict will do anything to get his next fix. (rob, steal, kill) The dealer will also stop at nothing to get his money. Praying is not going to stop this vicious cycle. Serious penalties for drug dealers will not be implemented because the revolving door is too lucrative for lawyers, the court system, etc.; so we had better get used to the violence because nothing is going to change.

everything is not always drug related. I didn’t know either of these men but I do know murder is wrong. My son attends the same college as this young man. He was a football player for Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Ms. I am glad they got the guy that did this. I am just praying for his family as well as his football family because at this time that’s all a person can do.

to ashipps I believe that bond is set by the legislature and statute, this is not something that law enforcement arbitrarily decides – it is based on the crimes charged then a Judge will review the facts that are available and decide if the bond should be raised, lowered, or left the same. As to your issues with a VOP bond is set by the Judge, depeding on the original charges and the charges in the VOP. People on probation have already pled or been found guilty of their crime and probation is an opportunity to show the Court and society that the offender can live a law abiding life in their community. A VOP is a failure on the offenders part to conform with sociatial standards and the Judge then has the duty to impose an appropriate sentence.

    Alarmed and Armed:

You just seem angry. I didn’t read anything in the ‘needs to stop’ comment that warranted such an outrageous rant from you.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if he/she doesn’t respond.

    Alarmed and Armed:

The article states “the shooting appears to have been DRUG RELATED” people are going to say what they want. Maybe you should refrain from reading these post if they are going to cause you to be so defensive.

    Just sayin’

  18. OldMan on June 15th, 2014 10:08 am

Dont think just because someone plays ball and appear to be a good guy, it’s not always the case, I’ve known too many ‘good guys’ that are dope dealers’ it’s just what they do. Born into it, and keep the dream alive and well.

  19. My Op on June 15th, 2014 9:56 am

    @ o english,
    Well said.

But when will society except the fact that most people cannot be rehabilitated and keeping them in prison forever is not a viable option.

Not enough consequences for the actions they continue to take.

Yes I believe in the Death Penalty, cold maybe, but others could think twice before doing something and not as many repeat offenders.

  20. Alarmed and Armed on June 15th, 2014 9:33 am

    Needs to stop:

So you are saying that the police are lying and saying it was drug related? What facts do you have to support this in this case? Show us in the black community proof instead of arbitrary accusations like my fellow countrymen do time and time again.

Don’t thinking has anything to do with our black youth embodying the rap star culture with murder death kill cars clothes drugs and women wearing nothing? Its the sick perverted culture that YOU allow your children to watch and listen to.

I’ll be waiting for your response.

  21. Joan on June 15th, 2014 9:23 am

You cant blame all Parents for everything adult children do…its called greed and the dollar bill ….Parent are helpless when children become adults its not much they can do because adults are responsible for there own actions and the choices they make in life its not always the way they were raised there are good parents and there kids still take a wrong turn in life.1Timothy 6:10 for the love of money is a root of all evil, some people eager for money have wandered from faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows Drugs and Money go hand in hand and ruin will follow. Prayers for all, this tragedy has effected

Responding to the first blog entry, the accused has rights as well. I know that is hard to swallow in a case like this where it seems it’s open and shut, but, the way our laws are written a person is innocent til proven guilty.

Black on black on white on brown, purple, green. We HAVE to be better as a community. I think it starts at home with parents being parents, but, I don’t have the complete solution for it. It pains me to see ANYBODY die senselessly. Let’s all make a commitment to do our very best going forward to erase this epidemic we find ourselves in.

  23. ashipps on June 15th, 2014 7:50 am

Tell me this….how in the world does a person arrested for murder get a bond..
Just say he happens to make bond…just saying!!! That mean you are putting other people’s lives in danger. Cause he is going to prison so he may just go ahead and kill whoever else he wants to. What does he have to loss!!!! Don’t make any sense that a murderer gets to have a chance to get back on the street but let it be someone with a VOP charge and they have no bond..what’s probably gonna happen is if he and that’s a BIG IF …he gets out he will be on the run and he will do more crimes and hurt innocent people while running the streets. I don’t understand some of the law’s but now I understand what pisses off the poor family that losses their child in whatever way it happen. You Can’t just kill people cause you want something they got. No Matter if the killing took place during another crime. They really need to rethink this cause he is a MURDERER not someone with petty crimes!!!! What a joke!!! My PRAYER AND THOUGHTS goes out to the FAMILY of this young man and may OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM help you get SOME KIND OF CLOSURE… GOD BLESS YOU!!!

  24. needs to stop on June 15th, 2014 7:47 am

All black on black crimes aren’t drug related. This young mans life was taken by a cold hearted person who just doesn’t care.as a community we all need to pray and figure a way to stop this killing one another it’s just sad
