Teen Hit By Van On North Century Boulevard

May 28, 2014

A teenager was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle on North Century Boulevard in Century Tuesday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 16-year old Eric Carthon of Century was walking in the paved middle lane of North Century Boulevard about 9 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford Windstar van. The driver of the van, 19-year old Ciara Sparta of Flomaton,  told authorities she was moving into the center lane to make a left turn on Highway 4A and did not see the teen.

Carthon was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

The Florida Highway Patrol said charges are pending in the crash.

    >>His name is Eric CARTHON not CARPHON

Thanks. I verified that you are correct…it’s Carthon, and I’ve corrected the story.

(The FHP report states Carphon — that’s where the mistake came from.)

Cops call that middle lane “The Suicide Lane” for a reason. I hope the boy is ok and recovers fully.

I wish people would understand that Century Blvd. is also a main thoroughfare to Interstate 65. Truckers as well as all sorts of out of towners come through here everyday. It is not safe. I have been glad to see the county deputies working hard lately to keep the speeders down as they come through Century. Most of the time, though, these kids just don’t think they are in danger. They need to get a grip. What ever happened to parents telling their kids to watch for cars and stay out of the road….hmmmm

Just a few days ago I had to stop and wait for three young men to get out of the Center divide on Century Blvd, so I could make my turn. I hope word of this gets around. Crazy dangerous, but living here on Century Blvd I see it nearly everyday.

When will the citizens of this area learn that the middle of Century Boulevard is not a walking trail. I see adults as well as kids walk down the middle of Hwy 29 (Century Boulevard) all the time! It is a miracle that this doesn’t happen more often, and to do it at 9:00PM. Pedestrians need to follow the rules of the road set up for them, in most cities walking down the middle of the road would get you a ticket for Jay Walking. Here it could get you killed!

There is always someone walking on centry. They to tell them to wear clothes that show up in the dark. Or one of those yellow vest with reflectors. or tell the walker to only walk in certain place

Get on one side or the other. You cannot go through life walking down the middle of the road.

Especially in a town that features sidewalks.
