Gas Leak At Escambia Jail

May 29, 2014

According to a new release from Escambia County, about 8:00 Thursday morning a person preparing food in the kitchen of the Escambia County Main Jail, 2935 North L Street, detected a natural gas odor. The kitchen was immediately evacuated.

Pensacola Energy was called in and confirmed there was a natural gas leak in the kitchen of the main jail.  Natural gas service to the kitchen was turned off. The kitchen remained off-limits to general jail staff and other personnel as natural gas experts began to address the problem.

Contractors working on behalf of Escambia County were brought in this morning to begin the process of replacing a natural gas line valve that feeds into the kitchen of the main jail.

There is no timetable on the repair of the valve of the natural gas line. However, food preparation services are not expected to be interrupted as staff will be able to utilize other methods of meal production until full natural gas service can be restored.

Escambia County Facilities and Corrections staff followed protocol to make sure those working in and residing in the main jail were not in danger at any point following the discovery of an odor in the kitchen this morning.

The building is not condemned. This gas leak was at the Main Jail; it’s a totally different building that the Central Booking and Detention facility that had the explosion. The Central Booking building is condemned and now sits empty.

Hmm if the building is condemned why is anyone still being housed there. Also I wouldn’t want to work in a condemned facility maybe the guards need to stand up and say they aren’t going to work in an unsafe environment. I mean the government evicts people by force from condemned houses so I fail to see why the jail is not just torn down. Start over find some spot in the middle of no where and build a building that will house all inmates at one location. The only time they will need to leave the jail is for trial.

Give the jails back to the Sheriff. Enough is enough!!! County Commissioners or politicians do not know how to operate a jail. Get some new jail administrators in and make some changes. What next?

Utilize other methods for meals. It is a nice way of saying they are getting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and foul smelling meat sandwiches. This is terrible and getting worse daily instead of better. We need to stand up and speak out, enough is enough. No one deserves to be treated this way. The DOJ and ACLU need to step in. We are talking about the treatment of American citizens.

429SCJ, That would require them to actually work on a county issue, taking away from thier private profits.

The commission must awaken and act, not react.

For heavens sake use your rank and office, take corrective action.

They have already experienced they loss of lives. They really should consider going to total electricity. I really would hate to see another person die. Even if it would cost more for electricity it would be worth it to save a life.

Perhaps the jail officials should check into going all electric instead of natural gas. Just a thought…. :/
