County Updates Status Of Jail Following Explosion

May 6, 2014

After last week’s explosion, Escambia County officials said the Escambia County Central Booking and Detention facility will be closed indefinitely.

The Escambia County Citizens Information Line has fielded more than 5,0oo phone calls about the status of inmates. The county is looking toward finding mid  to long-term solutions for temporary housing of inmates. Officials said all inmates who were housed at Central Booking who asked for medical treatment have received care.

Booking of incoming inmates is being conducted at the Main Jail, 2935 North L Street, Pensacola; however video visitation is suspended until further notice.

A kiosk is available at the Main Jail so money can be deposited to inmate accounts and families may visit www.MyCarePack.com to purchase items for inmates including clothing, food items, phone cards and more by selecting “Florida” and “Escambia” on the home page.

Money orders may be sent to inmates at the Escambia County Road Camp, 601 Highway 297-A, Cantonment, and staff continues to work to establish commissary rights for those in the work release program and phone privileges.

For more information on the jail or the status of an inmate, call the Escambia County Citizens Information Line at (850) 471-6600 at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Jails should be ran by the Sheriff, not County officials who have no training in this area. Save taxpayers money, we have all been duped. We have to decide, pay now for staffing or pay later for lawsuits. Looks like it will be the lawsuits that we let the politicians decide for us.

    For Stina:
(personally he is a friends son. Only 18 and is in the county jail for a violation of probation. (battery charge) He is not a bad kid,) Stina good kids don’t get charged with battery. Seems he didn’t learn anything from the battery charge since he is in jail for violation of probation. (not a bad kid) The problem with individuals like him is everyone is always making excuses for his bad behavior. Just admit he is a bad kid and hope he will straighten his life out before he kills someone. What he needs is tough love. I always say it’s best not to comment on something when you expose stuff like he’s not a bad kid .(battery and violation of probation.)

Maybe my previous comment was taken incorrectly. I am not saying release them by any means. What I am saying is they still have constitutional rights as well as any of us. I wanted to know if they had considered other shelter. Maybe even adding portables or some other housing for them. One of these inmates I know personally he is a friends son. Only 18 and is in the county jail for a violation of probation. (battery charge) He is not a bad kid, but agreed he needs to serve the time for his crime not starve, or become ill because so many of them are cramped in small places spreading germs and infections. Not everyone there is a repeat offender. However most everyone there has someone out here that cares. I just wanted to know the plans for the future!

It’s a shame how ALL the Commissioners are running and hiding from this. Where is the great Mr. Gene and his big mouth. Some family members on TV news should not be talking. I would not be on TV telling folks that my mother and sister are in jail. Maybe the Commissioners can erect a tent city like the one in Arizona to place the prisoners in.

You know what else is scary? The victims of the crimes that the prisoners were convicted for … forgive me if I dont shed a tear that they are overpopulated or they dont get enough visitation or heaven forbid they dont get their snack packs from the commissary on time.

It is horrible what happen and I feel sorry for those injured and deceased. However, let’s not forget these prisoners are in jail for a reason and maybe a little less comforts and communication may send a message that they dont want to return once they are released.

People need to get there facts straight before commenting on things they know nothing about.Would you reather see them in jail or running the streets commiting more crimes.

Has anyone heard any information on what they plain to do about the fact that the old jail is extremely over populated as well as the county road prison? Yesterday out of curiosity I checked the booking records 18 more people were arrested. Although they are in jail for a reason, I am concerned that the over population is unsafe, and dangerous for these gentlemen. I have heard rumors that they have even cut back their food servings in order to feed them all.

The county Commissioners has really failed on this project , trying to prove a point to the Sheriff and his officers, And now they are taking the easy way out and just closing the jail indefinitely. They was at least 2 days of warnings brfore the explosion. Even the Commissioners deputies had complained about the smell, headaches and light headedness. But those complaints went unwarranted.

I guess it would be more easy to check on someone if they would stay out of jail.

This whole week has been crazy. I feel for everyone involved especially for the deceased inmates and paralyzed officer. However as a parent I am fed up. The hotline is a joke and I can’t believe the county gave the same number to the flooding victims to call with questions and is being manned by volunteers who have NO information for the inmate’s families. Hopefully we will get some answers late this afternoon. I would like to thank channel 3 news and William at Northescambia.com you have had the best coverage.
