Wahoos Finish Road Swing With 7-5 Over Huntsville
April 14, 2014
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos defeated the Huntsville Stars 7-5 in the final game of the five-game series. The Wahoos (6-4) won their final game in Huntsville before the Stars move on to Biloxi next season. Huntsville (7-3) lost their second straight to the Wahoos after winning seven games in a row. The Wahoos exploded offensively, hitting four home runs against the Stars.
RHP Michael Lorenzen (2-0) started his second game of the season for the Wahoos and earned the win, pitching 6.2 innings. Lorenzen gave up 2 R/ER and struck out four while only allowing four hits.
The Wahoos appeared to have run away with the game, leading the Stars 7-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. RHP Sean Black gave up three runs and only recorded one out in the ninth before manager Delino DeShields called upon lefty Fabian Williamson. Williamson earned the save and recorded a strikeout in his 0.2 innings of work.
Left fielder Donald Lutz led the Wahoos’ offensive attack with two home runs and three RBI; Lutz went 3-for-4 in the game. Center fielder Yorman Rodriguez and third baseman Juan Silverio hit their first home runs of the season. Second baseman Rey Navarro continued his hot streak, going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
RHP Tyler Cravy (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings and gave up 5 R/ER to the Wahoos. Cravy struck out three and walked two while allowing three home runs. RHP Eric Marzec pitched 2.0 innings in relief and gave up just one run while striking out two Wahoo batters.
First baseman Nick Ramirez went 1-for-4 and hit a home run. Center fielder Mitch Haniger hit a home run for the third straight game; Haniger went 1-for-4 in the contest.
Since the Wahoos won and scored at least five runs, all online orders from Papa John’s will be 50% off on Monday. The Blue Wahoos return to Pensacola Bayfront Stadium on Monday for a five-game home stand against the Montgomery Biscuits. The Biscuits are the first South Division opponent of the season for Pensacola. RHP Carlos Contreras (1-0) will get the nod for the Wahoos. The Biscuits are scheduled to send RHP Victor Mateo (0-2) to the mound.

A Pensacola woman narrowly escaped injury early this morning when her car was struck by a train near Molino.
The accident happened about 5:20 a.m. at a railroad crossing on Brickyard Road, south of Barth Road. The roadway makes a 90-degree turn before crossing the tracks, and Mercedes Byrd of Pensacola said in the dark and heavy fog, she ran off the road and became stuck on the tracks. She had called her dad to help her pull the car off the tracks when she heard the train approaching.
“As soon as I tried to gas it an get off this train track, I called my dad. I couldn’t go any further. He tried to get here as fast as he could to pull me off, but the train got me,” Byrd said after the accident. Before the train struck her Ford Fusion, she jumped out and ran away from the tracks as fast as she could, getting about 100 feet away before the crash.
“Not only was my daddy watching over me, but so was God,” she said. Byrd was shaken but uninjured, and there were no injuries to the crew of the southbound CSX freight train.
The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash. The accident remains under investigation by the FHP.

FWC Law Enforcement Report
April 13, 2014
Florida FWC Division of Law Enforcement reported the following activity during the weekend ending April 10:
ESCAMBIA COUNTY
Officers received information that a subject in the Fort Pickens area was harvesting and in possession of over the daily bag limit of pompano. The officers located and made contact with the subject in one of the parking areas of Fort Pickens. The subject said he had been fishing and a fisheries inspection revealed 20 pompano. The daily bag limit for pompano is six per person. A citation was issued for the violation and the pompano were seized as evidence.
SANTA ROSA COUNTY
Officers received information from a landowner that several persons in a loud truck stopped near their property and killed a doe deer late at night. The landowner confronted the suspects and they immediately left the area. Officer Johnson and Lieutenant Hahr contacted three landowners in the area the next day. They determined the location where the deer was killed, which was well within the private property adjacent to the roadway. They collected blood samples from the private property and located two freshly fired shell casings along the pavement from a .45 automatic colt pistol.
Examination of the deer carcass indicated it was shot several times with buckshot and what possibly could have been a pistol round. Three 00 buckshot pellets were recovered with a metal detector. After talking to people in the area, they received information that led them to three possible suspects and a description of the suspect vehicle. Using various information sources, they identified the three suspects and located one of their residences in the Milton area. They also observed photos of the suspects posing with an eight point buck about a week earlier.
The next day, Lieutenant Hahr and Officer Johnson, with assistance from Officer Murphy, Reserve Officer Wise, and Lieutenant Lambert, determined three locations to begin searching for the three suspects. Lieutenant Hahr located the suspect truck parked at an apartment complex in Milton and observed all three suspects in the parking lot working on another vehicle. He contacted the other officers and waited for their arrival. Once they were on scene, the officers quickly separated the suspects before interviewing them. All three suspects cooperated and admitted to killing the doe the night before, and additionally, admitted to killing the eight point buck the weekend before at night. T
hey also admitted to several instances of night hunting in the last several weeks. The officers located a .45 pistol, a 20 gauge shotgun, and a .22 rifle that had been used in taking the deer, along with a cooler containing deer meat from the buck. The meat had spoiled due to a lack of ice. The officers identified one other possible suspect, a young woman who drove the truck the night they killed the buck.
Officers Johnson and Wise located her later that evening and interviewed her. She also admitted her involvement in the case. The antlers from the buck that was killed were located hidden on the property belonging to the mother of one of the suspects. A total of 17 charges were filed against the four subjects for seven different violations including taking deer at night with a gun and light, road hunting, possession of an illegally taken deer, discharging a firearm from a public roadway, trespass, trespass by projectile, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week;however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.
