Developer Plans New Dollar General For Cantonment

April 14, 2014

Plans for a new Dollar General store in are in the works for Cantonment.

Teramore Development, LLC, of Thomasville, GA, is planning the 9,026 square foot store for a 1.03 acre lot on Woodland Street at Highway 29 — adjacent to the Cantonment Fire Station.

According plans filed with Escambia County, the new store would not have any vehicular access directly to Highway 29; all driveways would connect to Woodland Street. Plans call for the lot to contain 31 parking spaces and an adjacent storm water holding pond.

The plans have been presented to the Escambia County Development Review Committee during a pre-application meeting. The DRC has not made any ruling or recommendations on the store. It will be up to the property owner or the developer to decide if they will move forward in the permitting process.

Not a great location, but we can always use another store to buy our Chinese made stuff from….!!

Why so many complaints? Obviously, the demand is there or Dollar General wouldn’t waste their time and money. If you aren’t happy with development–even on the Highway–maybe you should move somewhere the demand isn’t?

I think this is great news for Cantonment.

@ JCELLOPS Guessing you don’t see that huge triangle between the store and the road that says ‘ Stormwater Management Area ‘

All you complainers, lets make sure we DON’T see you in the store shopping, once you’ve passed the Cantonment store on your way home and forgot something you needed. Family Dollar just isnt the same. Keep Em Coming, Hope the next one’s in Enon ! It’s a 10 mile drive to my store.

I live in the subdivision a block west of this area and cannot imagine a store there. There is no turn lane off 29 in either direction and traffic is always coming fast. I put my blinker on for a full block before turning to caution other drivers that I’m slowing down to turn. Turning left off 29 often results in sitting stopped on 29 if other cars are in the median. Folks, this is a traffic disaster in the making. That property should be strictly residential. I vote no, but seriously doubt our upstanding county officials really care.

Yes!!! Six more Jobs for northescambia….

Can anyone imagine the delivery trucks getting in here? Has no one been stopped by the semis coming out of Winn Dixie? I know I have. A semi turning into this area from 29 will hold up traffic in both directions. Hope no one catches the Cantonment Train and then has to deal with a semi truck for Dollar General haha. Semis coming through the neighborhood will break down roads not made for heavy trucks (I actually believe there is a “No Truck” Sign at the entrance of this neighborhood off well line). I lived there as a child and the entire road was Truck Drivers. None of them were allowed to bring their trailers into the neighborhood. Not to mention its a residential area. Tons of children, church activities ect will be competing for the right of way.

Yep, there IS a Dollar General in Gonzalez and there IS a Family Dollar store in Cantonment.
Which is similar to saying there is NOT a Dollar General in what I think of as Cantonment.

Do we need some governmental agency dictating just one per ten miles or per county?

We have people arguing there are too many already so nobody would shop there along with some thinking they would be so busy there would be wrecks caused by people in a hurry to shop there and fire trucks couldn’t get out because of the shoppers.

of note: according to a news report from several days ago, family dollar will be closing stores, eliminating jobs and reducing prices…out of 8100 stores nationwide, 370 poor performing stores will be closing during this year…perhaps we may need this little store, afterall…i dont see on the graphic where the retention pond would be…behind the store on the west side would be best (out of view)…personally, i wish that it was going to be a sonic…or a dairy queen :(

  9. grandjoy on April 14th, 2014 1:11 pm

Hey we need it built half way down Muscogee Road…better yet what happen to the land on Jack’s Branch Road that was to contain a shopping center? Too much on hwy 29 now makes traffic jams a headache….

    David Huey is 100% right.
    Don’t like?
Think there are too many already?
So prove them right and do not patronize them.
    Guess what?
The owner is not building it to lose money. They have done their homework.

“Put it in one of the vacant buildings” LOL!
Try buying one or renting one. The greedy owners think they are on a people magnet goldmine and want way too much for it.
    Thus it sits vacant.
What the county needs to do is charge more property taxes on vacant buildings versus occupied.

All i can say is if ya’ll don’t want Dollar General send it over across the river we can use one closer to us in the Clear Springs/Gateswood area

  13. JimD on April 14th, 2014 10:56 am

You don’t make money in renovating an older building. Building a new structure, there is usually some type of tax break, or at least a means for depreciation or loss on the business that can be written off on taxes. That is why you see so many unused properties and new construction just down the road.

It is not about what the peopel want or need, it is all bout the dollar, what is cost and what a company can write off in depreciation and taxes.

  14. NO Excuses on April 14th, 2014 10:37 am

They are also building a Dollar General store on Saufley Field Road just east of Blue Angel Parkway. There is a Family Dollar just across the street as well. It’s new too.

” really ? ” , i agree with your concerns.. My heart sank when I read this.

Maybe the dollar store will help put walmart out of business. Anything is better than walmart.

  17. dm on April 14th, 2014 8:51 am

If people don’t know how to drive now, they probably won’t know how to drive then, but that applies everywhere. At least this way the fire department would be on hand to help the bad drivers.

The fire department will help — clean up after the wreck happens – it won’t prevent any wrecks.

I can’t right off hand think of another Dollar General in Cantonment, just a Family Dollar store. Just because there are many doesn’t mean there are TOO many. Customers and non-customers will determine that. Just because I don’t want something doesn’t automatically mean NOBODY should be allowed to have it.

I really don’t care how many dollar stores we have, but they could have chosen a better location.
There is a Dollar General next to Winn Dixie, 2 miles away – (3 at the most).

  18. Really?? on April 14th, 2014 8:41 am

David there is either a Family Dollar or a Dollar General at the Food Tiger, one at Winn Dixie, One on 9 mile road, one in Molino, One at 9 mile and palafox. All not impeding on the local families or the entrance/exit of a Emergency Medical/ Fire Department area. I try to avoid the intersection as it is now due to the danger of it, you cant really get out at the intersection across from the Apartments either because people fly over the curve. Both of the stores in Cantonment already are ALWAYS full when I stop in. I’d like to know why they are now popping up every few miles?

  19. haley on April 14th, 2014 8:24 am

I think there is an over abundance of Dollar General’s-however, I don’t see the problem with another one. They kinda remind me of how Wal-Mart got started. Lord help us if they turn into another Wal-Mart putting all the “mom and pop” stores out of business. Whatever……Can’t stop progress so bring em on.

  20. David Huie Green on April 14th, 2014 8:17 am

It would bring in more traffic equal to the number of times people used it, but that shouldn’t be so many that it would interfere with emergency vehicles. If it IS that many, there must be a strong unmet demand.

If people don’t know how to drive now, they probably won’t know how to drive then, but that applies everywhere. At least this way the fire department would be on hand to help the bad drivers.

I can’t right off hand think of another Dollar General in Cantonment, just a Family Dollar store. Just because there are many doesn’t mean there are TOO many. David for freedom

Agree with “resident”…..ANYTHING that would impede the fire department access to Hwy 29 is a bad idea……seconds count when in an emergency. Sure wish they would utilize a vacant building…..the old post office, one of the empty stores at the old Winn Dixie just up the highway… what are they thinking??

  22. kathey rudd on April 14th, 2014 5:22 am

What’s wrong with the one we already have?

  23. resident on April 14th, 2014 5:16 am

This is a terrible placement for this store the traffic will interfere with fire department response not to mention the residents that live here when the gas station across the street was opened that intersection was horrible now with Dg going there it will cause more wrecks and traffic congestion being there is no turning lane heading north on 29 at woodland not to mention the neighborhood kids having to look out for the extra cars coming though there streets trying to avoid that intersection wish the people who plan this would think about the harm it would do instead of just how much money they can make

  24. Really? on April 14th, 2014 1:56 am

This is horrible. No one in this town seems to understand the median/intersection rules that are there now, much less with a business such as a Dollar Store in the mix. I cant tell you how many times I ,myself, have seen wrecks, hesitant drivers and near misses due to the fact that most people dont get that you actually pass each other in the median to turn into the neighborhood and the bar. Lord help the people that live in the area if they have to deal with this!!!!

  25. 429SCJ on April 14th, 2014 1:36 am

How about an auto parts store, something we can use.

Escambia county has a menagerie of dollar stores, we need no more.
