Flomaton Teacher Arrested In Robbery Of Elderly Women

March 20, 2014

A Flomaton Elementary School teacher was arrested Wednesday for an alleged snatch-and-grab robbery Tuesday night outside the Wind Creek Casino.

Clemente Renard Brooks, age 52 of Dixon Road, Flomaton was charged by the Poarch Creek Tribal Police with third degree robbery and first degree theft of property. He was booked into the Escambia County (AL) Detention Center in Brewton.

Butch Lee, assistant chief of the Poarch Creek Tribal Police, said Wind Creek Security reported a purse snatching in the casino parking lot about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Two elderly females reported they were leaving the casino when they were approach from behind by a black male in the parking lot. The suspect allegedly grabbed a purse from one of the elderly women and then wrestled with the second victim but was unable to take her purse away from her. The suspect then fled on foot.

Lee said the victims were able to identify the suspect and video surveillance from the casino led to Brooks’ arrest.

Brooks surrendered himself to Poarch Creek Tribal Police on Wednesday. Lee said the victim’s purse was recovered but was missing $400.

Brooks is a former Flomaton Town Council member. He made an unsuccessful bid for Flomaton mayor in 2012, losing by 20 votes to incumbent Dewey Bondurant.

I am so sorry that Mr. Brooks fell into this desperate situation….but he made the choice…a very bad choice….he may not deserve another chance to educate our children or represent your town but God allows things to happen to us sometime for a greater good….Mr. Brooks will have to find his own peace with God. I am a sister and after my brother fell as deep as you could go…prayers and many tears brought him home….I love him so much..he has been clean and sober for a little over a year now…all thanks to God for helping him…Mr.Brooks and the ladies he harmed are in our prayers. …his journey to a higher ground will be useless…if he tries to walk it alone….remember God still carries use when we can’t walk.

All I want to know is how in the world did he get hired with a drug record at a county school? Do they not do a background check anymore? I don’t care if he was getting his life right, you don’t take those chances with children. Those kids are somebody’s everything. They engrave right and wrong at home and then the children see their role model do this….? I would not trust the principal at that school or whoever does the hiring because they overlooked a lot and it questions what else he or she overlooks. You can forgive the man but for heaven’s sake don’t put him in a position that changes kid’s lives.

Ok just a few personal thoughts:
I have known Clemente for many many years, come on people he is no saint! This is the man that had been busted in the past for selling marijuana out of the ice cream truck! Yes he did get past it, got his teaching degree, ran for mayor, was a city council man, and yes he did, we all thought, have his act together, obviously we were wrong. No, no one is perfect, so why are some of you trying to make it out that he was/is. I am sure that many of us would have helped him IF he had asked, but he didn’t. I feel very sorry for several people in this situation. Clemente’s son, the 2 ladies, that this happened to, the children that he was teaching, the parents of these children, they are the ones that have to explain to the kids why the media is all over out little town. I am not saying we should not pray for Mr. Brooks, by all means we should, but he is a grown man, he knew what he was doing. Feel sorry for the many victims in this case not for the perpetrator. Finally, Melissa you are correct Flomaton has GREAT schools and some wonderful teachers. One bad apple does not spoil the whole bunch, especially if it is removed in time.

OMG!! What could have driven you to this. I won’t kick you while you’re down, but OMG!!!

Jean you need to put your children back in a school. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you are not an educator! Please, for the sake of your children, put them back in school! SMH!!!

I’m not going to judge. Knowing him like my family does; I just can’t see this happening. He was a big part of my brother’s lives as they grew up. My mom always talks about how big of a help to her he was, getting my brother’s to practice and such. I’m going to pray for Clemente and for the 2 ladies in this situation. It’s just sad all around.

Jean there is nothing wrong with this school at all. My children attend this school and we are very pleased with their education. There are bad examples everywhere including the churches we all worship in. You can not judge a whole school on one mans actions. I pray Mr. Brooks gets his life straight and learns from this experience . We should lift him up in prayer instead of tearing down a school that has nothing to do with his actions. This school has caring teachers that work hard for our kids and it is just not fair to attack the ones that have the morals that all teachers should have.

Praying for the victims of this crime; they will probably be scarred from it forever. Our elder should be respected and protected by ALL people. A crime against an elderly person should be held to a higher degree of criminal behavior in my opinion.

It is just a shame this man ruined his life like this. He worked so hard to get his teaching degree and seemed to have things going in the right direction. I hate he felt like he had to do something like this.

You think you know people. Just goes to show you, what you see isn’t always what you get. Hes innocent till proved guilty but the video and having the ladys purse is telling.

  16. Ellenb on March 20th, 2014 5:23 am

    What the hay Clemente?!
You have been so respected in Flomaton for so many yrs that there is likely nothing, no help not given to you, if you had just asked! All you had to do was let us know you were in need!
I have no clue what’s going on with you, but I will pray for you, because it must be bad for you to do this. I hate that you felt you had to do this, & I’m sorry!
    Praying Clemente!!
