To Nikki- the northern states are set up for freezing temp with the day the buildings are insulated. They also sell heavier clothing. I grew up in the north. WE ARE NOT SET UP FOR THESE TEMPS.

Is it really that hard to provide your children with warm clothes? It’s not like it’s snowing or other hazardous conditions. It’s just cold…there are much colder areas of the country that would not bat an eye at the temp here.

We really are turning into a country of whiners. An excuse for anything.

School needs to be canceled. The h1n1 virus is in our area hitting us hard and if a student gets it , it might be mistaken for something else. And it can put a lot more students in danger. Not only that , Tate has a lot of issues with controlling the temperature. So , I as a student at Tate do not feel comfortable going to school. Race coals with the swine flu going around. It’s not at all a good situation. And this is florida. Most stores here don’t sell clothes for these temperatures.

What happens if our kiddos get sick, don’t see escambia school district paying the doctors bill. I think its to cold for school. Some kids might not have warm enough clothes to wear. Some of the schools that are suppose to have heat DONT!!!!! Just close the schools one more day!

Its stupid when schools are just as freezing outside as they are inside. For kids who go to Ernest Ward, Bratt, and Northview its only gonna be between 20 degrees and 31 degrees. I have to wait outside for 30 minutes because my parents work in the morning. Just cancel school for one more day!

Can you say ” children are going to be in the hospital with pneumonia ” lots of missed work and school for kids going to the doctor when they are coughing their heads off next week …… Grrrrrrrrrrrr :/

Some of my class rooms are certainly not adequately heated. We checked the thermostat …56 degrees. That was in late November. Our heat and air conditioning is controlled by the district…we have to request to have it changed… And it can take a long time…

These make me giggle…. if they canceled school there would be 100 replies about “what am I supposed to do? I have no childcare”

Although I get it, if you will just layer up your clothes, and your kids clothes, it will be ok. Put on two pair of jeans, or tights/nylons under jeans, two pair of thin socks are warmer than one pair of thick ones. If you can get them, put insoles in the kids sneakers. On top, a t shirt, flannel or other long sleeved shirt, sweat shirt/sweater and then a coat. Scarves, hats and gloves are great too. Keep your head covered and you will be a lot warmer. Since the majority of kids at our end of the county have door to door or walk less than a block to the bus stop, just keep them on the porch. Unfortunately, the heaters on the buses are not meant for these temps so your kids will be cold on the way to school. Oh, in a pinch, socks can double as mittens. A small trash bag will double as a hat if you roll it up.

Stay warm and hang in there, Spring is only three months away. :-D

I see what state care about their children. Didn’t last year our children miss a day because of rain? Why can Alabama see that some children are not ready for this weather. Escambia county schools seem to only care about some children not all. Sure we can choose to keep our little ones home but then we will be frowned upon from some school people. This just goes to show how people really feel about the children. Older students have classes that will mean they will be out in the cold changing classes.

  14. I make my own decisions on January 6th, 2014 6:27 pm

Parents, remember you CAN make your own decisions on whether to send or not to send your children based on your own personal circumstances and feelings on the matter. It’s called common sense and being the head of the household. If you feel it’s too cold and your kids don’t have the proper clothing, coats, etc.. then keep them home.

  15. just concerned on January 6th, 2014 5:16 pm

I just have to wonder if they have considered all the elements. Yes its just cold weather however we are Floridians, my kids do not own big coats. I am not so much concerned about my elementary strident as I am my middle and high school students. They have to rotate classes in this weather. My kids don’t ride the bus but if the bus breaks down its going to be awfully cold for them to wait for another bus.Not to mention the huge wait in the car rider lines.
Its one day, it will be back to manageable by Tuesday.
Oh well mine will be staying home.

  16. well on January 6th, 2014 4:48 pm

Nothing like teaching kids how to use excuses early on.

  17. Me on January 6th, 2014 3:59 pm

Well school will be closed for my kids on Tuesday!

  18. northender on January 6th, 2014 3:45 pm

WHY? NONE of these children need to be exposed to this weather. Some don’t have parents that can drive them to bus stops to keep their kids warm. Some of the buses don’t have the correct heaters. Most kids don’t even have coats for this weather. Oh well, somebody doesn’t care about the kids. We have built in weather days in the calendar.

  19. Arcilla Reed on January 6th, 2014 2:53 pm

Well sad to say some some kids have to walk to bus stops and wait classroom heating is not so well sone kids classes are in trailers well I can speak for my kids no school tomorrow

  20. Cynthia on January 6th, 2014 2:52 pm
