Four-Wheeler Stolen In Walnut Hill Results In Grand Theft Arrest

A Flomaton man has been arrested on an outstanding warrant in connection with the theft of a four-wheeler last year.
Johnathon Keith Buchanan, 21, was charged with felony grand theft of a motor vehicle for the alleged theft of a 2007 Honda Recon valued at $5,830 from a business at 5026 Arthur Brown Road in Walnut Hill on November 30, 2012.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Buchanan transported the four-wheeler to Escambia County, Ala., and sold it for $400. The stolen four-wheeler was recovered in late December and returned to the owner with about $300 in damage.
Buchanan admitted to the theft, according to an arrest report.
Aggies Softball: Perfect District, Breast Cancer Awareness Game Friday

The Tate Lady Aggies Softball team continues to be perfect on the season in District 6A play (10-0) with wins last week over second place Navarre (5-4), Escambia (9-3) and Pensacola (20-1).
This week,the Lady Aggies will continue their district play at home against Washington (Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.) and now second place Pace. The game at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Pace will be the annual Tate Breast Cancer Awareness game where all proceeds to go the fight against breast cancer. Last year, the Lady Aggies raised $4,674.
Caregiver Support Group To Meet

Council on Aging of West Florida will host a Century Caregiver Support Group Meeting on Thursday, March 21 at 6 p.m. There is no cost and the public is invited. Reservations are not required. The meeting will be held at Century Care Center located at 6020 Industrial Blvd. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the same time and location. County residency is not required to attend.
The support group is designed to reduce stress, increase coping skills, provide strategies for effective management of care giving tasks and enable caregivers to provide high quality care in the home. The programs are sponsored by Council on Aging of West Florida, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Northwest Florida Area Agency on Aging. John Garrard, Jr.

John Garrard, Jr., 86, of Atmore, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Atmore.
John was a native of Flora, MS, where he graduated as valedictorian of Flora High School. John enlisted in the United States Navy, and served his country during World War II. In 1949, after graduating from Millsaps College with a degree in economics and business administration, he moved to Atmore. John served as president and CEO of First National Bank of Atmore, and also served as city councilman of Atmore for 16 years. He was on many committees and clubs, but above all, he loved serving his church, First United Methodist Church, the City of Atmore, and the Atmore Public Library.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Fonda; his parents, Annie Hayles Garrard and John Garrard; two brothers, Bobby Garrard and Bennie Garrard; and one sister, Myrtle Garrard Bowman.
John is survived by two sons, John Michael (Gail) Garrard and David Garrard; granddaughters, Kelly (Rusty) Howard and Lori Beth (Michael) Diller; five great-grandchildren, Anna Kate Howard, Alex Howard, John William Howard, Logan Diller, and Ella Grace Diller; one step-grandson, Blaine McFarland; and one step-granddaughter, Dana (Tony) Campise; and three step-grandchildren, Cala, Hannah and Cody Morrison.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from the First United Methodist Church in Atmore, with the Rev. Jim Reece officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.
Active pallbearers will be Blaine McFarland, Dr. Jonah McIntyre, Rob Faircloth, Jr., Stephen Van Pelt, Ted Presley, Larry Houck, Mayor Howard Shell and Mayor Jim Staff.
Honorary pallbearers will be the First National Bank Retirees Club and their spouses, the Atmore VFW, and past City Councilmen Chris Walker, Webb Nall, Louie Turner III, Cornell Torrence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Atmore Public Library or First United Methodist Church of Atmore.
Zell Barnes Brantley

Mrs. Zell Barnes Brantley, age 91, of Flomaton, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Brantley was a native of Escambia County, AL and a lifetime member of the Flomaton community where she was a homemaker and a member of Century Church of Christ. Mrs. Brantley was preceded in death by her husbands, Hunter Brantley and Wade Grice, Sr.
She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Ann) Brantley, Jack Brantley, both of Flomaton; step-son, Wade Guice, Jr., of Flomaton; daughters, Wanda (Evon) Johnson and Cheryl (Randy) Turner, both of Flomaton; sister, Dorothy Carden of Flomaton; 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 10 a.m. until a service time at 11 a.m. with Minister Clifford Dixon officiating.
Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery in Flomaton.
Pallbearers will be Robert Carden, Lewie Joe Smith, Mark Autrey, Josh White, Bubba Pridgen, Johnny Burkhead.
Fire Marshal Offers $5,000 Reward In Byrneville Arson, Burglary Case

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information on a September burglary and arson in Byrneville.
The fire occurred about 1 a.m. on September 3, 2012, in the 1200 block of Tedder Road.
The residents had been away from their home for several hours. When they returned to their two story home about 1 a.m., they found it full of smoke and called 911. When firefighters arrived, they found that a living room couch had been on fire and had been extinguished, and someone had tried to start a second fire in closet. Items, including a gun, were reported missing after the fire.
The home suffered heavy smoke damage throughout. Five people – two adults and three children – were left temporally homeless by the blaze.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is offering a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fire.

Thousands Attend Beulahfest (With Photo Gallery)

The two-day Beulahfest wrapped up Saturday at the Escambia County Equestrian Center.
Headliner acts Saturday were Confederate Railroad, John Anderson and the Kentucky Headhunters, along with local acts that included The Dusty Sanderson Band.

Marty White, morning show personality on WXBM 102.7, surprised the crowd as he appeared in a dress and wig along with Confederate Railroad. Marty said Confederate Railroad appeared at the Pensacola Interstate Fair about 20 years when their song “Trashy Women” was at the top of the charts, and he appeared on stage in a dress when them then like in the song’s video.
It “surprised them and the crowd with my version,” Marty White said, adding that the outfit still fits after 20 years. “Now there’s a picture for you.”

Saturday was opening day for Cantonment Baseball and Girls Softball.
The day included filming a commercial with Sandy Sansing, who made a $500 donation to the organization.

Guest speaker was Greg Litton, a former major league player for the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox. In 1992, he played all nine positions in the Hall of Fame Game.
Kazoo from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and the Cat from Cat Country 98.7 were also on hand.
