Grenat Pitches Perfect Game As Tate Beats Escambia; Lady Aggies Win Again

Friday night, Tate High School’s J.T. Grenat pitched a perfect game against the Gators of Escambia High School, and the Lady Aggies continued with a perfect district record.
The Aggies (15-9, 9-2) beat the Gators 3-0 in Cantonment as Grenat struck out five. Also for the Aggies, Rashan Johnson was 2-2 with a double and an RBI. Andrew Mack was 2-3 and Sawyer Smith with 1-3 with a double.
The Tate Aggies will be away Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Pensacola High School.
SOFTBALL
In Tate softball action Friday, the Tate Lady Aggies continued their perfect district season by beating Milton 7-5.
The Lady Aggies are now 19-3 on the season and an undefeated 14-0 in district play.
Rachel Dunsford and Brooke White had a double, two hits and an RBI each. Amy Waters was 2-3 with an RBI for Tate, while Heather Tomason was 2-4 with a couple of RBIs.
The Tate Lady Aggies Will host Niceville Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Weekend Gardening: Hit A Home Run With Knock Out Roses

I love roses, I always have. After many years of growing roses, I found myself becoming, dare I say it, a bit of a rose snob. If it wasn’t a hybrid tea, I didn’t want anything to do with it. But as many Southerners know, the hybrid teas do have to be pampered and constantly monitored and treated for fungal diseases.
A couple of years ago, I decided to add some Knock Out roses to my landscape. I was taking a hesitant turn away from the long stems of the hybrid teas to a common shrub rose. I am very glad that I did. This year, the shrub roses are covered with dozens of beautiful blooms. Massed together, they are breathtaking and grab the attention of neighbors.
Landscape shrub roses will not make you great cut flowers, but they will give your landscape an abundance of rose flowers for the majority of the year. They practically bloom non-stop during the growing season, from March to November in Northwest Florida. Also, they are much less prone to blackspot disease than the traditional hybrid tea, floribunda and grandiflora roses.
The Knock Out family of roses was started by rose breeder Bill Radler when he crossed seedlings of ‘Carefree Beauty’ with ‘Razzle Dazzle’ to create the original Knock Out rose. The family now includes varieties that range from blush to vibrant red and even yellow.
In general, Knock Out roses are drought tolerant, self cleaning, and resistant to black spot and powdery mildew. Since they require little maintenance, they are ideal for gardeners who enjoy roses but who aren’t interested in the upkeep required to grow hybrid tea roses. The only drawback of Knock Out roses is that they don’t have a strong fragrance. According to the Conrad Pyle website, the only true fragrant Knock Out is the yellow ‘Sunny’ cultivar.
Like all roses, Knock Out roses need to be planted where they will receive at least six to eight hours of sun each day. It also helps to have a site with good air movement and well-drained soil that falls between pH 6.0 and pH 6.5.
Knock Out roses generally grow three to five feet tall and equally as wide, but some sources say they can reach eight feet tall if not pruned, so be sure to space them appropriately.
After planting, water them regularly until they get established. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch to help retain moisture in the soil, pulling the mulch back from the stem of the plants. Be sure to avoid overhead watering which can increase the chance of fungal leaf spots. They prefer a deep watering every once in a while rather than frequent light waterings.
Knock Out roses are referred to as self-cleaning meaning that the spent blooms will fall off on their own. They will re-bloom every five to six weeks regardless of your deadheading practices. Deadheading is the removal of faded blooms. Most gardeners have found, however, that occasionally deadheading will create and maintain a tidier, more attractive plant.

Teen Suffers Minor Injuries After Wild Airborne McDavid Wreck (With Gallery)

A 17-year old McDavid teen is recovering after single vehicle accident Thursday night in which her van was airborne for about 200 feet.
Authorities said Taylor M. Brook had donated blood at a blood drive in Century shortly before the 6:38 p.m. crash on Highway 29 north of Highway 164. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, she fainted as she was traveling southbound on Highway 29 as a result.
Brook veered off the roadway and struck a culvert. Her 2006 Ford Freestyle traveled about 200 feet while airborne. The vehicle vaulted over a ditch, the chain link fence in front of a residence at 1401 North Century Boulevard and went though the top of a tree, just below the roadside power lines. The front of the vehicle struck the ground and the vehicle overturned, coming to rest on its passenger side in a front yard.
Brook was airlifted by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where she was listed in good condition early Friday morning. Family members said it appeared that she suffered no major injuries.
No charges were filed in the crash, according to the FHP.

Two Shot In Escambia County; Woman Cut On The Head With Knife

Two people were shot in Escambia County Thursday afternoon, and woman was cut on the head with a knife Thursday night in Pensacola.
Brent Shooting
Just after 4 p.m., deputies received a report of a shooting in the area of Cary Memorial Drive and Lenox Parkway. Witnesses told deputies that the victim was shot multiple times following a disturbance. The victim then walked to a nearby yard on Quina Way where he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital by Escambia County EMS with unknown injuries.
Further details have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
Old Palafox Shooting
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting that took place at approximately 4:30 p.m. m at the In and Out Deli, 6861 North Palafox Street.
The victim transported to local hospital. Early indications are the victim was involved in an accidental shooting, but the investigation will continue by the Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
Woman Cut On The Head
An argument between two women escalated into a physical confrontation Thursday night, ending with one of them being cut on the head and the other going to jail.
Sharise Lewis, 19, was charged with burglary with assault or battery.
The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at Pensacola Village on East Fairfield Drive. Pensacola Police Officer Coy McKenna said Lewis and Shavonyul James, 22, also of Pensacola Village, got into an argument on the front porch of James’ apartment. The two women ended up inside James’ apartment where they continued fighting.
James told police she told Lewis multiple times to leave her apartment, but she didn’t and
began hitting her. James said she feared for her safety and the safety of her children so she began defending herself. As a result, she grabbed a knife and cut Lewis on the head.
Police were told the incident occurred after James’ 3-year-old son and Lewis’ son, who is approximately the same age, had been playing earlier. James’ son hit Lewis’ son, and Lewis became angry.
Lewis was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Livestock Show Saturday

The 20th annual Gulf Coast Agricultural & Natural Resources Association Livestock Spring Show will be held this Saturday at the Langley Bell 4-H Center on West Nine Mile Road.
The livestock show will begin at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the entire day. Over 60 combined 4-H and FFA youth will have an opportunity to show their steers, swine, beef breeding animals, goats, lambs, rabbits and poultry.
At 4:30 p.m. , those animals raised for market such as hogs and steers will be available for purchase during a livestock auction.
The public is invited to attend all of the day’s events.

Relay For Life Of UWF Gets Underway Tonight

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of UWF will get underway tonight.
“It’s the progress we’ve made together – as a University, as volunteers, as survivors and as students and staff – that has helped the organization reach this incredible milestone with tremendous success,” says Event Chair, Sarah Norman. By lending your support to the UWF Relay event this year, you’ll be lending your support to the Society’s efforts to finish the fight and bring an end to cancer as we know it. ”
Relay For Life of UWF will be held at the UWF Track on the University of West Florida Campus from 6 p.m. on Friday until noon on Saturday. The Opening Ceremonies will begin promptly at 6 p.m. with a Survivor and Caregiver Lap. Activities and entertainment will fillowe, with a variety of team fundraisers happening throughout the event.
One of the most touching moments during a Relay For Life event is the Luminaria Ceremony which takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bears the name of someone who has battled cancer. The UWF Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9 p.m., and luminaria may be purchased at the event.

Three different concerts will be held in North Escambia tonight, offering a variety of free entertainment:
Northview Spring Concert
The Northview High School Spring Concert will take place at 6:30 in the school theatre. The free event will include performances by the school’s Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble and Glee Club.
Barrineau Park Music Night
The free monthly Barrineau Park Music Night will be held at the Barrineau Park Community Center from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.. The Rowell Family Band and the Joyful Sounds gospel band will be featured. The singing begins at 6:30 p.m. Food and refreshments available at 5:30 p.m. This is a family-friendly event with no alcohol permitted, and no smoking is allowed in or near the building. The Barrineau Park Community Center is located on Barrineau Park School road, about three miles west of Molino.
Emily Danforth Concert
Emily Danforth will be in concert at 6:30 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Molino. Danforth is a musical major at the University of Mobile, and is one of 16 performers selected nationwide to attend the International Performing Arts Institute in Kiefersfelden, Germany, this summer to study opera. Admission to concert is free, however an offering will be taken to help Danforth with expenses for the trip.
Prescription Drug Take Back To Be Held In Escambia County

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Walgreens, in coordination with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will conduct a drug take-back program at five local Walgreens stores on Saturday April 27, 2013 from 10:00 to 2:00 pm.
The “Prescription Drug Round-Up” is a one-day effort between local and federal law enforcement to provide the public a site to voluntarily surrender expired, unwanted, unused pharmaceutically controlled substances, and other medications for destruction.
“Prescription drug abuse is not uncommon in our society and this is an opportunity for members of our community to get rid of their unwanted drugs before they fall into the hands of someone who may abuse or misuse them,” said Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan.
On September 29, 2012, the “Prescription Drug Round-Up” in Escambia County collected more than 438 pounds of unused and unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs.
At this year’s event deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and officials from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection providing information on the environmental benefits and ways citizens should dispose of prescription drugs properly.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the following Walgreens locations:

Wahoos Ride Homers To Opening Day Win

The Blue Wahoos opened up their 2013 season with a bang, smacking four home runs en route to a 7-3 triumph over the Tennessee Smokies. The sellout crowd of 5,038 was the first of the season and 41st in 69 home dates in the history of the Pensacola franchise.
Pensacola was in control for nearly the entire game thanks to its balanced attack and powerful hitting. Travis Mattair started the show launching the first pitch he saw in Double-A deep over the left field wall in the second inning. Bryson Smith followed suit a frame later, sending a line drive shot over the left field fence to square the game at two. In the fourth, it was Tucker Barnhart who crushed on 0-1 pitch off the batter’s eye in center field to put the Wahoos on top 3-2, a lead they would never relinquish. Donald Lutz joined the home run party in the seventh, lifting an opposite field shot to left to open the score up to 5-2.
The Wahoos also had RBI’s from Ryan LaMarre, with an RBI groundout in the fourth, and Devin Lohman, who added a two-RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Tennessee’s offense centered around shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. The Dominican native accounted for all three of the Smokies’ RBI’s, including a two-out, two-run tater in the top of third that gave Tennessee it’s only lead of the game at 2-1.
Chad Rogers (1-0) earned the win for Pensacola, tossing five innings of four-hit ball while strking out four and allowing two runs. Yohan Pino, Drew Hayes, and Lee Hyde all earned holds in relief, with Hyde getting the powerful Justin Bour to ground out with the tying runs in scoring position in the top of the eighth.
Tennessee starter Dallas Beeler was harmed by three home runs in 5.1 innings and took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
The balanced Wahoos attack saw eight of the nine starters record at least one base hit, including the pitcher Rogers. Barnhart and Brodie Greene attributed two base hits apiece while Lohman had the lone multi-RBI game.
The series continues tomorrow as Josh Smith takes the hill for the Wahoos against Alberto Cabrera for the Smokies. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Northview Beats Chipley

The Northview Chiefs beat Chipley 4-2 Thursday night on the road.
Daulton Tullis went seven innings, striking out nine and giving up four hits. Kevin Vaughan was 2-4 at the plate.
The varsity Chiefs will travel to Freeport on Tuesday, April 9 before returning home to Bratt on Thursday, April 11 against the Baker Gators.
