December 20, 2013

A Molino woman that claimed she shot her husband in self defense appeared in court Thursday.

The second degree murder trial of 43-year old Rebecca A. Rogers was set to begin January 6, but  Thursday Circuit Judge Ross Goodman approved a defense request to delay her jury trial until early March.

Rogers has entered a not guilty plea to the charges against her. She remains free on a $300,000 bond posted in late September.

She allegedly shot her husband, 42-year old Jason Lee Rogers, in the head last August at the couple’s home in the in the 3400 block of Highway 29 near Mathison Road. He died about two days later.

The shooting was  domestic violence related, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.  Rebecca Rogers called 911 to say that her husband choked her and she shot him, according to an arrest report. Deputies arrived to find Rebecca Rogers standing outside the home. They found Jason Rogers lying unconscious in the back bedroom of the home on his stomach with what appeared to be a gunshot to his  head. According to the report, he also suffered two other gunshot wounds to the back.

The couple had four daughters together.

What I remember reading about this from someone’s comment on a blog shortly after it happened, is that she had her gun to protect herself as she was telling him to leave and he started digging in a closet to get a gun for himself and that is when she shot him in the back.
I don’t think I’ve read where in the head he was hit and I don’t remember the caliber of the weapon she was using. If it was a smaller caliber, the back shots could have had a limited affect in the short term for stopping him.

@John: The two shots to the back may be ex post facto. If the head shot was first and what killed him, in my opinion, the ones to the back are irrelevant.

You cannot change people by beating them and when the situation in you relationship becomes so drastic that you feel you have to resort to beating your spouse, it is way past time to be gone.

    He should have left.

I hope justice is served. She may very well have been shooting in self defence. Whoever wrote that about the gun shot to the head not being an indication of self defence. Most women are not gun savy. We know that men are stronger and more dangerous. Your thinking is “old school”. When a woman verses a man in self defence, her best opportunity to survive is getting him from behind or a good unexpected blow to the head. Wife abusers do not just get locked up for a little while and then freed as happy well adjusted citizens. No, that’s when even worse abuse starts, because they think they have to teach her a lesson.

Someone can see depending on the entry wound to the head, how it could be self defense. But,how is it self defnse with 2 shots to the back.Darn shame that this happened to this family, but he had rights also (.life for a life.)
