December 27, 2013
A 61-year old Atmore man died Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.
Charles “Charlie” Warren Phillips was struck by the vehicle just after 6 p.m. on Highway 31 near James Road in Nokomis, Ala. He was airlifted to the USA Medical Center in Mobile where he passed away a short time later.
Phillips was struck by a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 46-year old Rodney Brooks of Atmore, according to Alabama State Troopers.

This story is tragic for all involved. I shared a childhood with his two daughters, Tina and Regina. He is resting now, in the bosom of Jesus.

Respectfully to Cheryl Hicks, I have to say that you would have had to have known Pawpaw Charlie to understand his lack of reflectors or other signals on his bicycle. First, his bicycle is his only way of transportation as he doesn’t have a driver’s license. Second, years of alcoholism have clouded his judgement and I’m sure it has never even crossed his mind he may need to be seen by motorists while on a busy highway. Just thought I would clarify that so that you could better understand the situation instead of just making assumptions. Thanks.
Thank you all for your kind comments and well wishes to our family. Charlie was my grandpa, and though this is a horrible thing we’re going through right now, I believe we can all agree that he is in a much better place now than he ever was here on Earth. Those who knew him knew of his struggles and, though he will be missed, I am personally relieved that now there will be no cold, hungry, lonely nights for Pawpaw Charlie. Your prayers are greatly appreciated and all I can ask is that we all remember him for his crazy stories, his songs, and all of the kindness he showed to his many friends, and basically everyone from Atmore to Bay Minette! Thanks again to everyone.
You will be missed Charlie. Just talked with you for a while the other morning before I went hunting.. RIP Charlie !!
Please keep the Phillips family as well as the driver of the vehicle in your prayers! The driver knew Charlie and this is taking a toll on him also! May God give all involved peace and comfort.
Traded that air guitar for a harp and serenading the angles and Jesus now! RIP Charlie you will be missed by everyone who knew you!
My pastor and his wife where on there way to Atmore from Bay Minette to a funeral home and saw this man before the accident, they said you could not see him, no reflectors or lights on the bicycle. Then on there way back home came upon the lights ……from the ambulance, police, etc. this is so sad if he would had just had reflectors his family would not be going through this today! Our prayers are with all involved, because now 2 families are in grief.
