Escambia Woman Dies Aftering Being Backed Over At Walmart
December 25, 2013
An elderly Escambia County woman has died after being backed over in a Walmart parking lot.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Tuesday that 88-year old Virginia M. Abercrombie passed away December 20 at Joyce Goldenberg Covenant Hospice from injuries she received in the parking lot of the Mobile Highway Walmart on December 11.
The Florida Highway Patrol said 83-year old Matilda R. Townsend of Pensacola was backing up for a parking space when she failed to observe 38-Susan A. Wilson of Loxley in a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird behind her. Wilson began backing up to avoid being struck by Townsend.
The FHP said Wilson failed to notice Abercrombie and struck her.
Charges are pending the outcome of a FHP traffic homicide investigation.

So sad. Everyone is always in such a hurry right before Christmas and we need to be very aware of who and what is around us. My sympathy to the family of this woman.
@Wharf Rat – I believe the person that caused the whole mess was driving through the parking lot and passed a spot so she stopped instead of going around and started backing up and the car behind her started backing up to not get hit and then the old woman was squished. People are just so lazy when it comes to parking spots. God forbid they drive around again because OMG they may lose that perfect spot so they don’t have to walk their fat butts to far.
In a commercial parking lot, I always find a spot I can pull forwards from. And working downtown, I found it safer to back into a parking spot and pull forward. I could see what was coming. But, the “majority?” prevailed., and I found I have to back into traffic. There is a lot more to driving than just going straight down the road. Condolences to the family and the driver.
