I-10 To Be Widened From Davis To Scenic

November 18, 2013

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has started work on a $43.1 million construction project in Escambia County to widen I-10 to six lanes from east of the Davis Highway interchange to the Escambia Bay Bridge.  In addition, construction crews will widen Scenic Highway (U.S. 90) between Whisper Way and Northpointe Parkway, replacing the Scenic Highway overpass.

Other features of the project include:

  • Installation of sound walls on both sides of I-10, from east of Davis Highway to Scenic Highway
  • Addition of a sidewalk and bicycle lane on Scenic Highway, from north of the Quality Inn to north of Northpointe Parkway
  • Addition of highway lighting along I-10 from east of Davis Highway to Scenic Highway and on Scenic Highway from Whisper Way to Northpointe Parkway
  • Construction of storm retention ponds
  • Drainage improvements

What to expect:

Phase one of the project, widening Scenic Highway between Whisper Way and Northpointe Parkway and replacing the overpass, will begin November 2013.  Construction impacts to Scenic Highway will include:

  • Periodic nighttime lane closures, 8:30 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Periodic lane shifts
  • Temporary modification of entrances for properties adjacent to Scenic Highway
  • Driveway replacements

Access to businesses and other private property will be maintained at all times.

  • Work to widen I-10 from four to six travel lanes, from east of Davis Highway to the Escambia Bay Bridge, will begin January 2014.  Construction impacts will include:
  • Periodic nighttime lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
  • Periodic lane shifts
  • Speed limit reduction from 60 mph during various phases of construction work
  • Installation of sound walls adjacent to I-10

The entire project is planned for completion in fall 2016.  All construction activities may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

So they’re going to widen a portion of Scenic Highway that stretches the length of an overpass? How will the relieve congestion? So we still get to follow the snowbird out on a leisurely drive at 8am who doesn’t know how to maintain speed on the hills and all scramble to pass him when the road widens for half a mile? Sounds like a great plan. Or are they just widening it to make longer turn lanes? Doesn’t seem like it will solve much to me. Synchronize the lights at both exits to really relieve congestion.
Seems to me Olive Road or the I-10 on-ramp at Hwy 29 South would be a better place to spend the money.

Richard you are trying to apply common sense to government projects. It don’t work. I would like to know who the engineer who thought putting a southbound US 29 ramp with a suggested 25 mph speed into the inside lane of I10 with a speed limit of 55 mph was. Every time that ramp gets damp there is a crash.

Widening lanes only releases latent demand(I-10 is always to busy,,,until now) and encourages future use.
University of California at Berkeley’s 17 year study covering found that, for every 10 percent increase in roadway capacity, traffic increased 9 percent within four years’ time.

50 Mill could be spent very effectively if we didn’t grasp for drooping grapes so often.

That’s a pretty busy stretch of road. Four lanes will help. I also agree with you, Richard – Olive road through the Ferry Pass area is terrible! Four lanes would help, but I don’t know where they’d put them. When they widened the road a few years back, they ate up the front yards of the properties along the road at that time. Where would the new lanes go?
