October 27, 2013

A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a deer early Sunday morning near Molino.

The accident was reported by a passerby just before 2 a.m. on Sunshine Hill Road just north of Crabtree Church Road. The 58-year old male victim was thrown from his motorcycle after a direct collision with the deer.  He told first responders that he had been down in the roadway about an hour before he was found.

He was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital by ambulance as a “trauma alert” with back and leg injuries. The deer did not survive the crash.

The victim’s name has not been released by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS also reponded to the crash.

Joe and Danette thank you very much I will keep that in mind, as you know bikers are a family and they have been very helpful. Thanks to all for the continued prayers. For an update he had seven broken bones in his leg now has a rod, screws and a plate in his leg. Doctor said normally they amputate the leg when it’s this bad but he wants to try and save it, God was guiding the doctor I say, so now we are in the healing process. Mike’s in good spirits and is ready to move forward. Thank all of you again for your prayers and kind words. Praise God.

John, Marion, & the rest of the family… we are so thankful Mike is going to be alright even though he has a long recovery ahead of him. I don’t believe we know y’all personally but might know face and not name. As a part of the local biker community we want to remind you that we are a family and the local bikers will step up if assistance is needed, all you have to do is let us know your needs. Please don’t hesitate!!!! dreeder929@aol.com, just an email is all that is needed. I can’t even imagine what he went through during that time of helplessness. We have had a very close encounter with a deer while riding, it was terrifying and could have went the wrong way very easily. Please don’t hesitate!

It’s only been in the last 10 or so years that I’ve seen the number of dead deer on the roadways explode. We have way more deer than we did 10-15 years ago. It’s a good thing in one way, because there are more to harvest, but maybe we should think about thinning the heard when motorists and even motorcyclists are placed in jeapordy due to a bloated population of deer. It’s not just Florida either. The problem exists in MS, AL, and LA. As a person who has endured 2 hospital stays due to MC accidents, my prayers go out to Mr. Mike and his family.

I do agree that everyone needs or think things through before they speak. And agree nice things were said. Just crazy how it was said they hope we made good use of the deer. And it’s a sin for the deer to go to waste. Yes my dad does have along recovery ahead. And said he does appreciate all the nice comments.

First prayers for this man and his family. I can not imagine the fear at that time and for the future. Second, I don’t think those who made the deer comments meant anything by them. All said nice things for the man in the accident and prayers for him. They might not have thought it fully through or considered the differences in a car hitting a deer and a motorcycle but I don’t think they meant anything by it.

I for one would not hesitate to help out this family by buying them some groceries if the need is there. Don’t mind helping out those who help themselves and helping those who can’t at a time like this. Just let us know if the need arises and I am sure that people on this site are like myself and would not mind at all with helping this family out. IF we all reached out and helped one another like the LORD expects us all to then this world would be much better off with no one going without or needing anything for that matter.

I am the son of the man that was on the motorcycle. Everyone is so worried about posting about the deer but never thought about how he had to lay on the side of the road for a hour. And watched a couple cars slow down but not stop. He could see his house but couldn’t do anything about it. Yes he will be out if work awhile. Has to have another surgery on his leg this morning. @Elmo. I seriously can’t believe the idiots on here. Thank you for sticking up for him. Like I said the webmaster would not post my other post.

@T! Really! Have ya ever had a motorcycle!? I hit a deer in 2005 on a motorcycle, was out of work for 4 weeks! How could you ever ask a question as that! If you’re so worried about feeding the hungry, I would suggest ya start with local food banks! This guy is hurt, might even be out of work? Get his address, go to a grocery store and buy some food for his family while he is unable to work T! Just saying!

I was coming back from Atmore late Friday night and the car in front of me hit their brakes as a deer jumped over the front of their car! Hwy 97 is famous for deer as we all know. You have to be very careful and drive a normal speed in order to avoid the, but sometimes thats no even enough.

Praying he will recover from his injuries. This same thing happened to me as described in the post. Laying in the road wondering why no one would stop to help you and then thinking one of those will run over you before help arrives. No biker would ever pass another biker up that’s broke down or injured. Bless you all….

Thank God sounds like he’s going to be ok. A few year ago one of my husband’s customers was killed this same way, in the same general area. I’ve been talking to a man from Lenox/Barnett cross roads area. Now in Arizona teaching motorcycle safety. He just wrote a book on the subject and writing for a Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club magazine. He was hit by a deer a few years ago. Messed up his leg. He said he would be happy to send some info our way on how to survive this kind of accident. I’ll be glad to pass it on to Northescambia or the Motorcycle club to prevent more accidents like this. Well deer can’t read so not prevent, but help a motorcyclist to survive.

  18. Marion on October 27th, 2013 9:59 pm

Thank all for your prayers, it was my husband involved in the wreck which wasn’t far from our driveway. Yes God was with him, he laid beside the road for over an hour before Michael Anderson found him and called 911. Mike was headed home from a Bikers For Christ Mission he works with on Saturday nights sharing the word and providing food for people. He said cars had passed by him as he laid there and he kept asking God to send someone to help him when Michael came by and stopped. We thank God that Michael was headed home at that time.

I don’t know you, but i do wish you a full recovery. As far as statements about the deer to feed the homeless, i doubt they even considered cleaning the animal. what a waste of nutritious food. I will always collect a deer i hit, it’s bad enough to have damage to my vehicle, but it’s sin for that animal to go to waste.
